Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizing Filter

This is the Tiffen 82mm Circular Polarizer Filter. Light rays which are reflected become polarized. Polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They can remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water or glass and also saturate colors providing better contrast. The effect can be seen through the viewfinder and changed by rotating the filter. The filter factor varies according to how the filter is rotated and its orientation to the sun. If you're out walking on a lovely day - in the mountains or at the beach - and you want to get a fabulous shot of a cloud-filled sky or make the water seem more saturated, then a polarizer is the way to go. This filter is the best way to make the clouds stand out, increase or decrease the saturation of the ocean or increase or decrease the reflection off the water. You can also use this filter when shooting into glass or windows since it will, again, either increase or decrease reflections.

Needed a polarizer really quickly for some video work for a car dealership. Saw some mixed reviews on this one, so I wasn't sure what I'd get. I was very pleasantly surprised! It noticeably cuts down on glare and reduces reflections in paint. That said, I found myself making compromises and choices when shooting entire vehicles, i.e., I couldn't cut glare on windows toward the rear of a car and on the front badging at the same time for instance. I assume that's just down to my inexperience and my need to shoot close and wide for the video work I was doing. I can imagine it performing even better for stills with a longer focal length and more compression. No complaints.

In this mirrorless age, only two filters are essential: one to protect the front element of a quality lens and a circular polarizer. Tiffen proves you have no reason to spend much on a quality filter. The glass is pristine, the polarizer works as well as any and the threads that screw onto the lens are smooth. Every dollar spent on anything better is a dollar wasted.

I feel like you need the polarizing filter for Digital Photography over others, Tiffen makes a good product and i use them the most, have been since back i the early eighties. The quality of the threads makes it and easy on and off and the adjustment ring is easy to use, and you can see the difference through the view finder. My one and only gripe about this filter is you can't stack another filter as the front is not threaded not that you need to. You need a good filter at a working mans price go with this and you will be happy

It's a Dandy CPL!
10 January 2024

It's a well made CPL. I have used it numerous times since I purchased it and love the ease of use. A previous CPL I had on my Tamron 85mm 1.8 previously was very tight to use and ended up with numerous fingerprints on it from slipping while rotating the filter. This one is far superior. Glass quality is also excellent.

No obvious defects, moderate polarization
27 May 2024

This works fine, with no obvious loss of IQ (which is a problem with many inexpensive polarizers). However, the polarization effect seems a bit less dramatic than with some of my other polarizers; this lets a bit more light through. Overall, it does much better than the price would suggest.

Replacement for similar SunPak Circular Polarizing Filter
16 January 2020

I bought the Tiffen because of price to quality comparision. The glass in the fixed and moveable sections seems to be much better than the SunPak. (After about fifteen years of use, the Sunpak started delaminating around the outside of each piece. The centers remain as new.)On the con side, the Tiffen rings are not as thick as on the SunPak and thus do not have as many screw-on threads, This makes the Tiffen harder to screw on and off and more likely to fall off the lens. The rotating portion is not as thick and makes it somewhat harder to adjust the degree of polarization desired. Both seem about equal in the degree of polarization possible.I have not compared to similar filters by B&W and others because I don't use the polarizer enough to warrant the extra ... MoreI bought the Tiffen because of price to quality comparision. The glass in the fixed and moveable sections seems to be much better than the SunPak. Used/damaged product was delivered.

Dust and fingerprints on my brand-new filter straight out of the package. Considerable amount of oil/grease oozing out of the sides of the filter all along the edge. Tried wiping it off, keeps coming out when twisted or pressure added. Will not trust this, the oil will drip and get all over the lens and threads.I work two jobs and don't have time to find packaging and mail it out to return it, not worth the hassle. Just disappointed that in the last few months 2/2 packages purchased from B&H came either damaged or in this case damaged and used (and unusable due to the significant amount of oil/grease dripping out of it). When I buy a new item, I expect to receive it that way. Weak Polarizing Filter
4 April 2024

This has to be the worst Polarizing Filter I have ever purchased. This filter did not make any difference whatsoever while in use. It hardly made any differences with water reflections. I have had many different Polarizing filters in the past which have outperformed this one.

Works great
19 March 2024

Bought this for an indoor car show where reflections and glare from overhead lights and neighboring cars is always a problem. While it didn’t eliminate everything, it cut it down greatly. For the price I wasn’t expecting it to do this well. Could just rotate until I found the best spot between the glare and reflections. Really made the pictures a lot better.

YOU NEED THIS
13 September 2023

This polarizing filter is just what you need to help capture that perfect picture on a bright day. I use this filter with my Canon EF-S10-18mm F4.5-5.6 IS STM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens. This has been one of my favorite purchases! It helps bring out the blue in the sky as well as battling all those annoying glares that appear on windows and bodies of water. 10/10 recommend for all landscape photographers! This filter is a MUST.
