A classic that does not disappoint

I am preparing for a trip to Alaska. For years I hesitated to join the legions of Tilley wearers because I thought I was too stylish haha. My husband absolutely loves his same model of Airflo hat for hiking, paddling and travel. I have to admit it is very comfortable, weighs nothing and packs like a dream. And with our efforts to keep the sun off it is definitely better than my various peaked running hats for these activities. I ordered the black colour and it actually looks pretty nice with my casual urban clothing as well as my technical adventure clothes. Plus if I get really desperate in the bugs it will do a great job of keeping a bug net off my face and neck (no one will see me in the wilderness) šŸ˜‰ I normally wear a size M in bike helmets etc. My head ...Ā MoreI am preparing for a trip to Alaska. I followed the Tilley sizing instructions and added 2cm as instructed. For 59cm the recommended size of 7 3/8 fits exactly right - not too tight, not too loose. In extremely windy conditions there is an integrated strap which will keep it secure. My husband swears it keeps his head dry despite the lovely bit of cooling mesh around the top edge.

First off, I must praise Tilley's customer service, which was nothing less than stellar. They helped me get in my order properly and dispatched the hat with dizzying speed. It arrived today, and it had been packed with care. The hat itself is wonderful. As well as being practical, it also has a lot of style. I have a pretty big head for a woman, and finding a hat to fit me is a rarity. The LTM6 offers a size big enough for my head. The fit is perfect!

This Tilly hat is wonderful for warmer weather and especially for traveling. I love the way it can be packed flat in a suitcase and come out in perfect shape. The versatility of the chinstrap system is excellent if you need to wear it in windy conditions. This is my fourth Tilly hat, and if I lose another, I will buy it again. You cannot go wrong with the Tilly hat. Just find the one that fits your use. I have the wool one with your flaps for cold weather and it is wonderful in rain and snow. the air flow is great in the summertime and I wear nothing else.

Great Sun Block
3 October 2024

I got this hat to do lawn and yard work. The brim is excellent at blocking the sun. The chinstrap is adjustable and great for windy days. My only gripes, however, are that it seems to need more ventilation at the crown to be truly called "air flow." Additionally, the sweatband isn't very thick and therefore not really absorbant. I often wear a bandana around my head to keep perspiration out of my eyes. Overall, I'd buy it again, maybe if this one ever wears out (but I don't think it will).

I'd suggest getting a different hat
3 September 2024

I don't recommend this Tilley hat for a number of reasons. 1. "Airflo" is a misnomer. The hat actually does not "air flow" very well at all based on my use. I have other hats, far less expensive, that "air flow" much, much better. 2. In strong winds, you will lose the benefit of the brim because the brim blows upwards in the wind. Yes, you can put the chin strap on to keep the hat on your head, but on a windy, sunny day, your brim will blow upwards, and not block out the sun at all thus compromising your vision. 3. The Tilley guarantee/warranty is actually not that great once you read the details. So, you should not be buying this hat based on any guarantee or warranty from Tilley. 4. Instead, I recommend the Stetson Safari Hat Breezer, or the LL Bean hat, or the REI brand hat.

It’s kind of perfect. Stylish and functional for summer.

I ordered it in black and I love it. And no, the fact that its black does NOT attract the sun and make it warmer.Even though it’s a technical hat, it is stylish. I picked this model because of the netting at the top of the hat that allows airflow and because it has a wider rim to protect me from the sun. It doesn’t look to big or too small on me, it looks just right. I also appreciate the lining along the forehead, it collects the sweat on my forehead without being overly irritating like hats or caps without a liner.I recommend that you follow the measurements instructions and measurements on the Tilley website to figure out your size and that you buy the size recommended by Tilley AND the size above (or go try it in store). The only reason I recommend this is because I bought my recommend size 7 two years ago and thought it fitted perfectly but as I wore it I found that it didn’t sit that well on my head as if it was a smidge too tight. But I loved it so much that I decided to buy it again in the next size up (7 1\4) (this purchase) to see if there’s a difference. There’s a slight difference and both fit comfortably on my head. The size up sits better on my head look wise and allows a bit more airflow because fabric is totally encompassing my head (if that makes sense). However, I’ll have to be extra careful when bending over or when it’s windy (that’s when the string come in handy). So I’d say it runs a tiny bit too small. Finally, quality is top notch and I expect it to be durable for years.

My beloved Tilley
14 July 2024

I bought mine over 30 years ago in Florida Basspro i think. I remember thinking, I'll get a new one with the Guarantee if i loose it or it turns out to be rubbish. This hat has travelled the world with me, I was a long haul pilot. now i live in Thailand. Over 30 years it is still as good as ever and it's worn most days. Ok its a bit small now but i just wet it and stretch it, not sure if it's shrunk or my heads just got bigger at 68 years old probably the Latter. The best purchase i ever made bar none . And other than my wife it's best thing i've managed to hold on to. Thanks TilleyI would advise anybody that needs a hat, don't mess around buy a Tilley it'll last you forever.PS. buy one you will grow into . TEEHEE

My experience with Tilley has gone downhill
11 May 2023

I have owned numerous Tilley hats. Lost first Tilley hat (not an Airflo) and it was a decent hat. Second hat was an Airflo hat that was used primarily for golf and the outside fabric around head band went bad and was exchanged under warranty. Third hat was an Airflo and felt lower quality, more flimsy, and cheaper than second hat then had metal pieces corroding and turning green, so cleaned/scrubbed the green off and metal was still discolored but no way to get it right. Let hat sit in house and did not use it, and it starting corroding green again soon after until totally green again. Except for the defective metal, this hat is in excellent condition, has never been washed, and I used it sparingly. Except for the defective metal, this hat is in excellent condition, has never been washed, and I used it sparingly. I have a much older and cheaper, but similar, competitor’s hat which I bought when I lost my first Tilley hat that I abuse and use heavily for many things. The cheap competitor’s hat has never had these problems like both Tilley hats.Customers should not have to deal with this. These hats are not difficult to make properly and Tilley has been making hats for a long time. Tilley says their hats are quality which at least sometimes isn’t true when cheap hats outperform their hats durability wise. Then they say they care about taking care of the customer. The retailer that provided me my last hat and processed the warranty for me told me Tilley refused to exchange the hat under warranty and made some excuse like its normal, then said basically I should deal with it and clean it myself. I may never buy Tilley hats again. Seems like their hats are overpriced, quality has gone downward, prices keep going up, they’re a pain and time consuming to deal with warranty wise, plus they charge a warranty handling charge. Seems like they went from the quality hat company of old to a more mediocre hat quality company for the price they charge.

This is a proper hat.
16 June 2024

This is a proper hat for many occasions. Well made, comfortable fit, timeless style. I use it primarily for fishing and hiking; great for both. The weight may be a little heavy for some, but I appreciate the feel of the material and the way the hat sits on my head. Fits well brim-down or farther back. Minus one star for REI pricing the hat 30%+ than multiple competitors, including the manufacturer's (Tilley) own website. Shame on me for not doing my research prior to purchase. Decided to keep it rather than return it and buy it elsewhere because our local REI does a great job (and I'm lazy). If you are looking for a versatile hat that will serve you well for many years, this is a great option.

Way better options for half the price
5 April 2024

I don’t get the hype. This thing is like an oven on your head with zero airflow. Way overpriced when there are much better options for much less. The worst is the stupid glorified shoe string retention, does not stay on your head in Colorado winds. It’s awful compared to a clasp you just cinch up. There is no way to tighten the hat circumference wise. Also, the stitching and quality did not feel like 99 bucks at all.
