I originally wrote a rather scathing two-star review of this lens because the copy I received was defective and pretty close to unusable autofocus wise. What I didn’t know at the point I had written the initial article was how amazing the Tokina support staff would be to work with.On informing them of the issue I was having with AutoFocus, they immediately started trying to replicate the issue in their facility over in Japan. All this - in the height of the initial outbreak of coronavirus. They worked diligently and were able to quickly determine that the issue was with the copy of the lens I had received. They sent me a new copy free of charge that was personally checked to ensure it was in flawless operating order. So when other people say why go with Tokina ... MoreI originally wrote a rather scathing two-star review of this lens because the copy I received was defective and pretty close to unusable autofocus wise. Tokina genuinely seems to take pride in their products and they stand behind them 100%. That’s worth a lot.And speaking of value, this lens offers an excellent value in terms of cost to performance ratio. It will give you 90% of the top end prime performance for 1/3 of the cost - creamy bokeh, sharp rendering across the frame, and build quality that rivals much more expensive optics. The autofocus performance is exceptional and just falls of the fastest 85mm lens I’ve ever used. Eye autofocus works comparably well also.In terms of overall rendering quality, this lens lends a neutral balanced classic look to the images it produces, making it an excellent choice for black and white photography and giving you a lot of headroom for working with color photos in post.At the current price point you really can’t go wrong. And it’s great knowing you’ve got 3 years under warranty to back you up should you need it.

This lens was amazing. Sharpness, weight, and balance is top notch. But in the middle of shooting my A7 IV froze hard. Trying to turn off didn’t even help. I had to remove the battery and reinstall it to keep shooting. It scared the daylights out of me! Was never able to reproduce in the next 50 or so shots… I shoot weddings so it’s not acceptable for that purpose.

I have only taken this out once but the results so far have been beautiful. In context, I've owned the Canon 85mm 1.2 and the Canon 85mm 1.4 back in my dslr days and the Sigma DG DN 85mm 1.4 lens most recently. I shoot a lot of on location portraits and found the 85mm to be too tight on many of the locations I shoot. With that, I reluctantly traded in the Sigma on the Sony 50mm 1.2 lens. I didn't have the funds to keep both. (The Sigma is an amazing lens btw). After shooting the Sony 50mm (another great lens) I found I really missed the compression of the 85mm focal length when I did have the room, so I started looking around for a sleeper and I found it! Im still recovering from the price tag of the Sony 50mm so I was looking for something cheaper than the Sigma to ... MoreI have only taken this out once but the results so far have been beautiful. Im still recovering from the price tag of the Sony 50mm so I was looking for something cheaper than the Sigma to have on hand for those occasions I wanted an 85mm. This Tokina fits the bill perfectly. It is a simple, no bells and whistles piece of glass that takes images comparable to any of the best lenses Ive used. The difference between 1.8 and 1.4 is negligible at best and this is built like a tank with its metal construction. I got it on sale for $399 and is a steal at this price. After shooting this I couldn't justify spending the money on the Sigma again which was one of my all time favorites. It is a very basic lens but the images are awesome even when shot wide open at 1.8.

I cannot stress how good of a lens this is.This is marketed as a budget lens but it surely does not feel like it at all.The lens is all metal, solid, and has this simple and clean aesthetic to it. The only real downside ive found with it is that I have to walk to zoom lol, I am so used to being lazy with variable zoom lenses that its taken some adjustment moving back to primes.I have shot with this lens a few times already in various lighting situations, except OCF, and it is tack sharp!!!The Bokeh is so good on this thing, better than the bokeh I would get with the Tamron 70-200m f2.8 I used to run on my D810The eye-af is really fast combined with my A7R2, though im comparing it to the dated Nikon D810 and 24-70mm combo I used to run.For $379 this is a ... MoreI cannot stress how good of a lens this is.This is marketed as a budget lens but it surely does not feel like it at all.The lens is all metal, solid, and has this simple and clean aesthetic to it. After achieving perfect focus on stars, the focus point moves slightly for the next shots and the stars get blurred. I do not know if this can be fixed somehow.
I received this lens with high hopes. Using it on my Sony A7rii. The images that were in focus were beautiful. The bokeh was great and images sharp! But sometimes it would stop focusing. So I would have to turn the camera off and then on again, and then it would start working again. I so badly wanted to keep this lens, but sadly had to send it back.
This lens is sharper than your favorite knife. It's Ben literally the sharpest lens I've ever used the price you pay for it is well below it's quality. Honestly, if you're on the edge, just buy it.
This lens is spectacular. I've been using it for event photography and doing impromptu portraits.Attached to my A7Riii it focuses immediately. I shoot a lot of balcony night portraits with city-scape background which makes the bokeh dreamy and bokeh balls beautiful.People often comment on it looking like a high priced pro lens, due to how the glass fills the entire lens body. I decided on this lens due to its small size and weight. Thinking I could get a 1.4 later. But now I have no plan to replace it and I an focus on getting a 135mm to go with it.
I bought this lens, thinking of saving money; I must confess that I am only a fan of photography. Although it is a lens for cameras with a full frame sensor, I mounted it on a Sony A 6000. I have been using it mostly in photography, and I liked the fast autofocus, the sharpness of the image and the beauty of the Bokeh effect. Perhaps a point to note is that it is a bit heavy, if one has in mind to use it with light cameras. I think that if one is not as demanding as a professional photographer, it is definitely a recommended lens.
Tokina is one of the best kept secrets in photography. They have a long history of designing lenses that are of high quality while being relatively affordable. The build quality is second to none on this particular 85mm. All metal with a focus ring that is an absolute joy to use (DMF mode on my Sony is awesome). Buttery smooth with nice resistance. Tightly put together, producing excellent sharpness and color. Auto focus is on par with native glass. The only downside is the lack of a rubber gasket around the mount and a flimsy lens hood that wobbles a bit. Otherwise, brilliant all around!
