Yes, it's expensive. But it is sure nice to be able to sharpen your planer blades on the spot. Just think of how many times you'll sharpen your or your friends blades over a life time, it's not like this jig wI'll ever wear out.

It works well. I found that it works best with a diamond wheel to ensure that the alignment of the jig across the wheel is exactly the same on both ends of the blade. I may just not have had my conventional stone trued up, but when I reground the joiner blades using the diamond stone, they worked very well and were easy to install. I also tried using the Deulen 6" jig with my DMT diamond plates but found it difficult to get the edge even across the entire blade. I bought my Deulen several years ago and it may be in that time period where I understand they had some quality control issues in their manufacturing. Love the Tormek and have invested in a number of jigs for turning and carving gouges all of which work very well.

I bought the Lie Nielsen book on sharpening (Taunton Press) and he praised highly the Tormek so I bought the jig. I had trouble getting the edge I needed (30 degrees) despite reading the Tormek booklet. I had the blades professionally reground on a massive and expensive machine. I then took the blade and spent considerable time to setup the Tormek jig (after using the diamond redressing stone) as accurately as I could. Now things work perfectly... and I have reground and honed the blades many times with a 30 degree angle.Lie Nielsen suggests putting on a secondary angle ...I have not done that on planer blades but have done this very successfully with my chisels and hand planes. I would believe it would be difficult to set up the planer jig for the 30 degree angle ... Sharpened my planer blades as a set and I was back smooth planed timber.
I have a 12" planer and my local sharpening service wasn't certain. So I ordered this. Setting up is easy and quick, what is not mentioned is how to ensure the set up is square to the stone. I just used trial and error, seems OK. I did use the diamond dressing tool. It does take a while to regrind the whole blade. In my case the previous sharpening had been done with a flat rather than hollow grind. I hope that when I resharpen it won't take so long. It does splash water every where. I also had to use the grading stone several times, to rejuvenate the stone surface. Having the whole planer blade on all of the stone doesn't seem to allow a natural wearing away of the stone particles.If there is something better, I haven't seen or heard of it......

Just what the doctor ordered. As soon as it arrived I got busy sharpening my planer and jointer knives. Works flawlessly. It’s also great for other types of removable blade/knife systems - in particular a griddle scraper that was sharp, but not as sharp as I’d like. Did a great job on that as well.
works as advertised and once exactly positioned sharpens fairly well-possibly needs a larger grit on the wheel because sharpening is painfully slow-difficult to sharpen/position for the entire bevel.maybe ,maybe not worth the money. i might get better results as I use it more. somewhat disappointed.
