I started setting the machine up and as I filled the water tray and started the wheel, the wheel kept on slipping. After multiple attempts to get it to run without slipping, I investigated the problem and determined that there is a small shaft that runs across the unit that holds things in place. This shaft was never properly seated from the manufacturer. Once I was able to seat that properly, the unit began to work as it should. Once I was able to get it working, I sharpened several kitchen knifes and find it to be an incredible unit. There is a slight learning curve and some practice will be needed to get a superb edge but it won't take long with this machines quality and precision. Caveat - I have little experience of the Tormek T4 system. On a brand new Tormek, I found the grinding to be a little uneven such that I was not grinding a bevel perfectly square to the chisel/plane edge, but with a little attention it does work (I grant this my be my inexperience). The ground and honed edge was however far better than with my diamond stones. My big bug-bear was flattening the back of the chisel/plane which took me forever (again, this may be because I am a dumb newbie). Overall I am pleased with the Tormek T4 and will continue to use it, but it is most certainly not quite as simple or fast as the "masters" show on video!

I am enjoying the T-4 for sharpening my bowl gouges. I like the slow speed and the fact that the wheel turns away from my gouge rather than towards it. My previous sharpening system was the low speed dry grinder with aluminum oxide wheel and a Wolverine vari-grind jig. I had three really bad "catches" on the grinding wheel with my old set-up; gouge caught on edge of wheel; tore a chunk out of the wheel and out of my gouge. I feel much more in control with the T-4.

I spent a long time looking at the Tormek T-4 and the sharpening system using the sanding belt. Now, I live abroad had it sent over DHL are very good and quick, but the cost of shipping and import tax puts another 40% on to the price, the thought of having to send for sanding belts, put me off, so I went for the TormekBut I soon found out I was as badly burnt as scolded, as Tormek said "We now sell our systems without jigs ",if I add my wish list together for jigs they will cost me considerably more than the machineI brought the Tormek because I also brought a wood lathe, and all the tools need sharpening, I got SVS 50 multi jig thinking job done, but I then had to buy turning tool setting jig to set up the turning gouges, now I am all set up , I am on a learning ... MoreI spent a long time looking at the Tormek T-4 and the sharpening system using the sanding belt. Now, I live abroad had it sent over DHL are very good and quick, but the cost of shipping and import tax puts another 40% on to the price, the thought of having to send for sanding belts, put me off, so I went for the TormekBut I soon found out I was as badly burnt as scolded, as Tormek said "We now sell our systems without jigs ",if I add my wish list together for jigs they will cost me considerably more than the machineI brought the Tormek because I also brought a wood lathe, and all the tools need sharpening, I got SVS 50 multi jig thinking job done, but I then had to buy turning tool setting jig to set up the turning gouges, now I am all set up , I am on a learning curve ,a bit fiddly at first but getting they ,except ,on the Tomek video it shows multi jig degree setting embossed with black ink/paint easy to read ,my one has just got the manufacturing stamps not embossed ,so I must put on my glasses to read the setting ,it will be OK when I get use to it but for now annoying .The Tormec video says you can use the SVS 50 jig for horning gouges ,and it shows you ,but I am finding the universal support gets in the way and I can not use the jig ,having to do it free hand ,someone else wrote this., again annoyingAs I said I am all new to this ,I could do a another write-up in 6 months I would then be a lot more competent.
So far; so good !Bought a knife jig , tooThere is a definite learning curve, on how sharp is sharpYou should reference edges with a BESS unit, for comparison ( used by lots of people and relatively inexpensive)Tormek needs a book on 15 magnification of edges ( or something like that) showing all the variablesNowhere is there a knife sharpening video showing the edges and various “ bad” conditions vs “ well done” edgesI’m finding edge grinding is the easiest and how many passes of honing make a sharp edgeI also find application of the honing compound every knife keeps surface slick and easy to maneuver vs sticky from old compound4-6 passes vs lots of honing passes is betterIt works well, and everyone needs a magnifying loupe to see edges as small as ... MoreSo far; so good !Bought a knife jig , tooThere is a definite learning curve, on how sharp is sharpYou should reference edges with a BESS unit, for comparison ( used by lots of people and relatively inexpensive)Tormek needs a book on 15 magnification of edges ( or something like that) showing all the variablesNowhere is there a knife sharpening video showing the edges and various “ bad” conditions vs “ well done” edgesI’m finding edge grinding is the easiest and how many passes of honing make a sharp edgeI also find application of the honing compound every knife keeps surface slick and easy to maneuver vs sticky from old compound4-6 passes vs lots of honing passes is betterIt works well, and everyone needs a magnifying loupe to see edges as small as thing areBetter than all the other cheap sharpening toolsJeff
There are some improvements over the older model, my favorite is the front sticker is steel and allows the angle finder to stick in a handy location. The top now being cast from a single piece including the bearing supports is also a pretty big improvement.I only have two complaints. I wish the stone truing jig came with the base system since I'm pretty sure I will need it much quicker using the knife and scissor jigs. I also wish you could use the universal support reversed on the honing wheel; if you aren't careful you can ruin your edge or polish further back than the bevel.I refurbish a lot of old tools, and it makes flattening the back and putting fresh square bevels on chisels and planes super fast. The water cooling is awesome because you don't have to ... MoreThere are some improvements over the older model, my favorite is the front sticker is steel and allows the angle finder to stick in a handy location. The water cooling is awesome because you don't have to worry about ruining the temper. The wheel cuts surprisingly fast, so if you've set everything up correctly you're going to get excellent results in a flash. If you're using sandpaper now over its lifespan it certainly pays for itself many times over.Note: I am only replacing my T-3 because it was in a plastic tote during a move and the tote mixed up with yard equipment. The tote flooded and left for a few weeks.
I am one of those people that has tried many times, many different ways to sharpen something like a knife and end up making it worse than before I started. Well, the T-4 has changed all of that. Along with my T-4 I got a set of jigs for sharpening my wood lathe tools. Anyone that has ever used a wood lathe knows the importance of sharp tools. I have sharpened my tools twice since I got the T-4, the first time took a little longer because I basically took a dull butter knife and put a straight razor edge on it. The second time was more honing than sharpening. The tools now hold an edge and cut better as well as more quickly than I would have though possible. Not cheap but for me it was money well spent. This is the ultimate piece of kit for sharpening little hand tools. Easy to use and Tormek have thought about everything from start to finish. Effortless and consistent results - Recommended highly!
I was in the position of having a quantity of chisels and planes that had belonged to my father that were in need of sharpening. Some were in quite poor condition. I had no idea about sharpening until I watched a number of videos on YouTube and decided that a Tormek would be a good buy. The larger T5 seemed unnecessary for my purposes and considerably more expensive.so I went for the T4. I found it fairly easy to use and gave quite good results. I expect it/I will improve with practice. I've only done the chisels so far,the plane irons will be attempted soon.My main complaint is not with the product but the way Tormek make me feel like a cheapskate for choosing the T4. On videos they tell you about wonderful additional wheels, but these are only available for the T5. What is particularly annoying is that the angle-setting gauge doesn't quite go small enough to accomodate the honing wheel on the T4. If I really was a cheapskate I would have gone for one of the numerous cheap copies that are available.
I can’t believe I waited this long to buy the Tormek. It is a quality tool that is easy to set up and get perfect results. I love the angle setting jig that comes with the machine. I have been sharpening chisels and plane irons all week and I am getting consistent results. My tools have never been sharper!!
