I bought two about 18 months ago. They are easy to use with my Mac laptop (as Time Machine backups). I have been able to retrieve info via Time Machine when necessary, so I have no complaints. I am curious about what these drives do in their spare time though...Time Machine can be idle but the disks are whirring away with their little blue light flashing indicating some sort of activity. This continues for some time (many minutes) after the disk is ejected/unmounted. Eventually the light stays on (not flashing) but disk activity continues for a while more, before the light goes out and the disk activity noise stops. This behaviour happens on MacOS Monterey, Ventura and Sonoma (the only ones I've used with these USB drives). Why do they do this?

I bought this drive to replace one that was being used as my time machine backup and so far it is not backing up my desk top like the prior one did. First off it was advertised as ready to work with a MAC and it wasn't. I could not get my MAC to recognize it so I called Toshiba tech services and told the rep I wanted it for a specific purpose and that is to be my time machine backup drive. The rep instructed me to format it in FAT 32 which does not work as a time machine backup it is a cross platform format. Sometimes when I boot up my computer it does not mount the drive and I have to go into disk utility for it to be recognized. It also interferes with one of my other external hard drives appearing on my screen and I have to restart my computer for it to appear. I may be returning this unless I can get it to do what I bought it for.

I've used this Toshiba drive (of some storage 1-4TB) for about 4 years total to be used both as a gaming storage device and as extra storage for some files. In my experience, these drives only last a year or two before breaking, even with careful management to ensure they don't get bumped, etc.My first version was the 2TB one and that lasted about a year and a half before it eventually broke and I had to do use some specialist drive recovery software to retrieve my files.I then bought another one, this time 4TB as I wanted more storage and assumed the previous one broke unexpectedly however this broke after about 3/4 year. The year-long warranty did mean that Officeworks replaced the drive for me, however this one has started not functioning properly and randomly ... MoreI've used this Toshiba drive (of some storage 1-4TB) for about 4 years total to be used both as a gaming storage device and as extra storage for some files.
