The item is compact and quiet, and I now have many movies archived. The downside is...the hard drive will ONLY play them on a computer or laptop NOT on a Smart tv system. This hard drive is only good for archive STORAGE...which means you need to copy/paste any movies you want to watch on tv, onto a 'playable' memory stick. This 4TB hard drive has now become my movie library...just what I wanted.

This external drive is rather simple - the packaging is basic; the enclosure is a no-frills black box; only one cable is required for operation; it comes formatted and ready to work; there is no fancy software or any extra functionality. This thing is a basic hard drive that plugs into a USB port. But that doesn't make it bad. The overall size of this device is small and with only one cable needed for operation; this is a great drive to carry around. The drive will even work with just a standard USB 2.0 Micro USB cable that you probably have lying around from your old cellphone. The LED indicator (which lights up blue in USB 3.0 operation and white in USB 2.0 operation) is not overly bright or annoying and the overall build quality feels solid. In terms of speed, this drive is quite average. It is a 5400 RPM drive and speeds are what you would expect from a basic 2.5" 2TB drive. Testing of the drive was done with CrystalDiskMark using 8 passes and a size of 4000MB. On an empty drive sequential read and write speeds averaged 131MB/s and 137MB/s respectively while random read and write speeds averaged 0.4MB/s and 4.6MB/s respectively. After transferring about 1.4TB of data onto the drive, sequential read and write speeds dropped to 97MB/s and 108MB/s respectively and random read and write speeds fell to 0.2MB/s and 0.5MB/s respectively. In terms of real world performance, I saw transfer speeds of about 105MB/s when transferring a random assortment of files. My only complaint about this portable drive is that it only has a 1 year warranty. Such a short warranty does not instill much confidence in a buyer. I have only encountered one HDD failure in my life and it was on a 3 year old Toshiba drive. I prefer to purchase drives with at least a 3 year warranty. Overall, this is a great option for a portable drive. If you are looking for something to back your computer up to, you may want to consider something a bit more stationary. This device was designed with portability in mind and works great for taking large amounts of data on the go.

I now have two Canvio Basics 2TB drives as my primary duplicated backup drives. They are serving very well in that role. They easily and quickly reformatted to the Journaled format for my Mac, and required no other special installation. The Canvio have replaced other, less reliable, backup+ drives. I have owned the first drive for 16 months, and so I cannot speak directly to its long-term reliability. However, I can say that that the Canvio drive is quieter and exhibits less vibration than those other drives. It also runs cooler. This gives me some confidence that it is better-made and likely to last longer. All-in-all, a great choice for a backup drive.

Bought this drive to run and store my PS4 games on my PS5.Does a sound job and anything new I download will automatically go to this drive. All my PS4 games play perfect, i personally have not notice any difference from running the games from the built in drive. Note you can not play PS5 games from this drive but you can store them. Advert states 2 years warranty.
01/12/21- It's the perfect size, weight, speed, and reliability for everything from PC/Steam, Microsoft Xbox 360 & One, Sony PlayStation 3 and newer, and (modded) Nintendo Wii's. Plug & Play compatible even with a OTG or USB 3.0 cable that most Android, Windows & Google Smartphone's can read without specialty apps or drivers. Verified it reads on my Galaxy Note 4 via OTG cable & Note 20 via USB 3.0 adapter. This item came with a 3 ft cable, more than what I needed to mount to my systems. This model doesn't come with any mounting kits, but mounting tape attached to console cases work well for awhile, but a light drop of super glue or epoxy good as a backup adhesive. Highly recommended for hot-drops, modders & partitioners.
Maximum transfer rate of USB 3.0 is up to 640MBps and USB 2.0 is up to 60MBps. Maximum capacity after format is 931Gb. The drive is small, comfortable to hold and easy to stick in a pocket. It doesn’t mark easily and is simple to use with no external power required (pulls all the power it needs from USB port). No backup software is provided, but to be honest this type of drive is best used with a drag and drop backup technique in any event. I thought the 1 year warranty was a bit on the short side as some competitors come with more, but the price is very reasonable. Based on my testing it is likely that the HDD used is a slower spindle speed 5400rpm drive and while this may be slower than most 7200rpm drives, it is quieter, draws less power and runs cooler. Based on my testing it is likely that the HDD used is a slower spindle speed 5400rpm drive and while this may be slower than most 7200rpm drives, it is quieter, draws less power and runs cooler. I used 2 free benchmark tools to test speed of this drive, ATTO and Crystal Disk Mark. Both tools can be downloaded for free. I tested the drive empty and after I had it filled with approximately 500gb of images and videos. I also tested it in the USB 2 port on my PC as well as the USB 3 port. As far as results are concerned, this drive maxed out the USB 2 port’s 60MBps, so to get best results always connect it to the USB 3 port (if available). ATTO reported average read and write of 148.88MBps and 144.24MBps respectively with a 5% drop in speed when the drive was filled with data. While way off the theoretical top speed of USB 3.0 (640MBps) this is a respectable speed for this type of backup storage. Crystal Disk Mark results showed an average of 145.6MBps and 145.2MBps for sequential read and writes: another consistent result. Nothing to see here, solid results and a good price. I would have preferred a longer warranty period but you can’t have everything. Recommended.
First impression not so good, whilst performing a backup the drive kept disconnecting several times on one machine using usb2.0 ports, I had no usb ports low to the desk and the 45cm lead that comes with this was too short, so scans LN58244 lead was used and has never given any problems before. I then swapped to the one supplied and this time managed to complete a 50GB backup but again once more it appeared to disconnect, but no loss of data that time. The drive is shorter then the 500gb model and has no rubber feet like the previous canvio so will slide about easy. One thing i did verify is that the drive doesn't require any special software to access the SMART info, most software especially crystaldiskinfo will retrieve it.
Plug and play using the USB cable provided. Recognised by Windows 7 PC. Note the model number for this item. While I know about 2TB drives, there are times it seems safer to use 1TB drives instead. The value for money changes but it's serving as a precaution against future data loss. While we can save thousands of images on drives such as this, it really proves safer to save video mp4 style files such as Internet downloads or Freeview USB flash drive recordings which were later copied to the Toshiba drives. I use the XYPlorer program to view files, yet for new files such as webp and svg I use the Irfanview program and its thumbnails view. There are other file viewers which may help with file extensions such as mp2 and mp4 and the ts files. I have found that the Toshiba and the Seagate 1TB and 2TB drives are safer to use that micro SD cards and USB flash drives which may lock up files or cause problems trying to move or even copy to other drives or to the PC. The very short USB cable connector for such external hard drives may cause problems but there are USB extension cables to buy if necessary. Whenever buying eBay items, it helps to keep the original packing just in case this is required for a return of an item or extra manual or user guide details. I look for 1TB drives at under 45 rather than pay an excessive amount as some sellers would ask for. If we set up a quick keyword search for 1 TB Toshiba Canvio Basics and then SAVE that search then we get email alerts for future sales so this could help for many of our computing and Internet items. Many of our cables are simply black or white but we can label these or the electric plugs for many of our domestic or office purchases. I recommend buying the white flat 8-way antisurge power units with the individual on and off switches next to the inputs. There are PC programs we can download to protect our USB drives when we eject them. If used for Android devices then use the Settings App and select Storage and unmount storage drive.
I am using this disk to make a copy of files of all kinds. Some directories have many small files, some have large files (pictures and videos). The first disk seemed OK at first, but after a day of copying files to it became very slow. The write rate was down 200 Kbyte/sec. That looks like it's broken, so I returned it.The second disk I ran a benchmark first, got 140 Mbyte/sec read and about 40 Mbyte/sec write. That is a bit slow writing, but OK. After writing files to it I already noticed it slowing down. After copying files was finished I ran the benchmark again, and now it is only 25 Mbyte/sec reading and 2 Mbyte/sec writing. It's still usable, but very, very slow. Not sure if there is anything I can do about it. I did try different USB ports.
I tried to copy hundreds of files onto this drive but they don't all get copied and some transfers are like that. Stops and starts will slow down the really big transfers unless we choose to skip files that aren't copied. From then on, it's pot luck what to do. The alternative would be less than a hundred files and taking note of any errors When the files permit the transfers using the move action then that's always pot luck, hence the safer option of copying files then verifying the number saved and their total file size agrees with the original ones. Right-click the files or the folder containing these, then select Properties or use a Windows Explorer-style approach and see the file details on the screen. While some sellers have websites offering installations, the Toshiba drives use a little USB cable and that can be inserted into the front or back panel USB ports. Due to the really large storage on the Toshiba drives, it is easier to save very large video files and PC program installation setup files onto these rather than millions of jpgs. Use programs that provide a safe ejection for USB drives and remember that some drives ought to be disconnected that way prior to switching off the computer. Reconnect later after Windows has fully loaded the desktop setup and various startup programs. Otherwise, the computer may not start properly and pause during the initial checks.
