I bought several of these at the local bed bath & beyond, two years ago. I use them daily and they have stayed intact. Tovolo must use quality silicone because they keep their shape. The large spheres are conversation pieces at parties, and the kids like them as well. I am about to buy a couple of more. I did read some people say they leave a residue in the drinks, I hope this not because the quality has changed. I never have had this problem with the ones I bought two years ago.

Ice is ice and crazy ice shapes are pretty cool in drinks. With that said, I bought the ice mold specifically for round balls of ice. The balls always have a crack in them after freezing and after about 5 minutes or so, the balls break into. They do not freeze solid but rather with a fissure. I really would have liked this product to be what is says, as that is what I paid for.

Unfortunately these molds didn’t produce the pretty round ice I was expecting. The ice cubes come out lumpy, cracked & foggy. Not sure how they end up lumpy, when the mold is a sphere. They pop open a lot too. Regardless if I put less water they still pop open & I end up with lumpy egg looking ice molds or lumpy circles. I had high hopes for these. The ice sphere in the picture, is one of the better looking ones.

This is a great idea - but unfortunately this product leaves a film/residue of something plastic in your drink.I tested making spheres many times. Here was the ultimate test: made ice cubes using a regular ice cube tray we've used for years. Made 2 ice spheres with this Tovolo product. I made sure the Tovolo molds were completely clean. Made all the ice with the same water right from the tap. Placed each set of cubes in a perfectly clean wine glass, and allowed to melt naturally. The result:Water from the regular ice cubes were crystal clear (just like the original tap water.)Water from both the Tovolo spheres had an abundance of white flaky material floating within the water, and a whitish, filmy residue on the surface of the water and edge of the glass.I ... MoreThis is a great idea - but unfortunately this product leaves a film/residue of something plastic in your drink.I tested making spheres many times. Drink at your own risk! I will be returning.
This is a great concept and perfect for drinking scotch. I read in other reviews at other sites for this Tovolo brand the possibility of a residue in your drink that results from using these ice balls. I was hopeful they were mistaken, or had something else in their glass.Unfortunately, sure enough, they were not mistaken. There is 100% for sure a residue/film/flakes of something that floats in the drink as these melt. I've tested several times by making a few ice balls with different methods: cold water, hot water, etc. and allowed the ice balls to melt undisturbed into perfectly clean, clear wine glasses. I thought I was crazy, but I compared to melted water from regular ice cubes using our trusty old ice cube trays. All made with the same water from our tap, which is crystal clear out of the faucet. Made sure the ice ball makers were perfectly clean. (I actually didn't even clean the ice cube trays). The result was crystal clear melted water from our ice cube trays, and disgusting water from every ice ball I tried - an abundance of mysterious flakes in the water with a filmy residue on the water surface and stuck to the edges of the glasses.I can only assume somehow it's the plastic getting into the water. If you search at Amazon for Tovolo Sphere ice molds you will see the negative reviews that explain this same issue. This is a shame because otherwise they work great. It actually would be a great value and the quality of the product itself is nice but what's the point if it's gross? and for all I know, unsafe?? Many people seem to love them but I can't help to think they don't notice the plastic residue floating in their drink.Drink at your own risk. I will be returning.
Love them! The ice keeps water cold for a long time. I bought some off-brand ones and the ice would taste like plastic. Yuck! So I bought an extra set of this name brand. Bed bath and beyond has this same brand. But...sorry bed bath and beyond but Walmart has you beat with their price.
I actually received this for a gift about 2 years ago, and then i went back and bought another one because i liked it so much. I can testify that after 2 years these are still working like a charm. The design is the best, because it has a grip on the bottom so you are not having to run them under water to get the ice out all the time. Really, if you like cold scotch, whiskey, etc... with a hint of water, but don't want to water down your beautiful bottle, BUY THESE NOW!
I've tried many different ice ball moulds and systems, including the Tovolo clear ice system, which was also pretty good, but a pain to use. At the time of writing this, this product is currently out of stock, but I hope it returns. These sphere ice moulds are the easiest I've used, the most convenient, easiest to find a spot for in the freezer as they are pretty efficient space wise, and the easiest to disassemble. I'm a little disappointed I didn't give these a chance earlier or I would have bought more, not only for myself, but would also make decent gifts. If these come back into stock, buy them before they're gone. Absolutely worth it.
Does it make spherical ice? Ehhhh kinda…. I’m using reverse osmosis filtering and no matter what they always split I’ve tried 2-24 hours of freeze time and no matter what they crack and split in half every time… does it last longer than regular ice in a mixed drink yes. Is it a beautiful sphere of ice? Far from it… definitely would NOT buy these again…
The product is as described on the website and appears to be good quality. It is easy to use and makes large round ice blocks. They look fabulous in the glass and last a long time. With a decent glass you feel like you are having a cocktail in a fancy bar! We are experimenting with putting lemon rind, mint and edible flowers in the water before freezing. Perfect for a non-alcoholic drink as well.
