We have been using the TP-Link Deco M5 (version 3) for over a month now, for a family of active wifi users. Our house is L-shaped and about 200 sqm, so lots of wifi dead-zones. Our previous set up used the ISP router and PoE to get wifi around the house - this just worked, but we had drop-outs and slow wifi (10-20Mb on a 50Mb service). The TP-Link Deco M5 changed all this. The coverage is brilliant, even extending outside the house and into the back yard and workshop down the back (we are on a 700sqm house block). You download an app to your mobile, follow the prompts and it does the rest. Set-up was truly a breeze.Managing the network is also very easy, using the app - it's "idiot proof". The app also has a number of nice features such as letting you know when new devices attach to your network, fixed-IP where required, and provides a monthly report on usage. You are also able to setup QoS for each device if required - we tried this, but ended up not using this feature.Overall, a great result for us, and money well spent.

I bought this product last week, Firstly my comments are dependent on my expectations. First of all as I have 1Gb speed, my expectation was moving this speed to the first floor using a Wi-Fi repeater according to its limit. I compared this product with other repeaters and started watching the price. I saw that it looks much better than the M4R model and the WiFi speed is faster(400Mb) at 2.4GHz. And it is stated that it gives around 800mb at 5GHz.So far so good, I set the first deco M5 successfully, the device boxed very well and the interface for setup was clear and easy. Also it has a nice design and you could mount it to the wall. Quickly I tested the setup for its raw speed, as this one has this future in the application. So I saw that it was around 1GB. Wifi speed was around 500Mbps which is good. But It is the same speed with the modem, which is something I expected, But for the first floor second deco didn't give the same speed, it was around max 100-150Mbps. That part was really disappointing for me. But the signal level was quite fine. So, if you are looking for a nice design, full coverage LOW SPEED wifi speed this could be for you. Also I tested with an older version of deco which is M4. The speed was much better and it is almost the same that I got from the main deco.Annoying part is, M5 looks like it is better signal value then M4, please check it:https://www.tp-link.com/nl/compare/?typeId=5700&productIds=40375%2C40542but the performance is less than M4. All decos becomes so hot after 5 mimutes whrn turned on and they never cool down. For me is very serious fire hazard. So if you have Tp Link router at home and you have some dead spots, try first Tp Link range extender (ac1750 or ac1900) and that's maybe enough for your home. Those Tp Link routers and extenders working as mesh system as well, so you won't spend too much money.

Get more out of your internet

6 bed double brick main house, 1 60sqm granny flat. Ran cat5e to the granny flat from nearby to the modem in the main house. Put one deco there. Two in the main house. Works better than the extender. Did a full Wi-Fi survey using netspot app, after strategic placement. Also tried turning them off one by one and seeing the impact. With the three I had very consistent/saturated coverage, and though some places did each the 800mbps Wi-Fi it was still so many multiples of the internet it meant you got the full performance. The big impact is that it brings 5GHz performance closer to wherever you are. With one modem and maybe an extender you end up being far too far away from a 5GHz leaving you with ok 2GHz performance . Ie you either sit on top of your modem and get fantastic performance or you move far away and get rubbish performance.Whilst some people complain of functional limitations I still got what I needed from the ISPs Wi-Fi modem (whose wifi I just turned off when connecting the deco), so not really any problems there.Whilst the automations seem gimmicky it was easy to get a notification of the time when my son actually put down his phone and went to sleep, great when asked to write a plea bargain to a teacher over late homework.Mesh Wi-Fi also means when you move around whilst playing a YouTube you don’t suddenly drop when handing off from the extender and rejoining the Wi-Fi modem. That doesn’t happen anymore.Note it can be really worthwhile daisy chaining these with cat6 cable rather than relying on them talking to each other over radio but my experience shows just having two tethered when really far apart, and only one in the middle connected by radio, made the big difference.Bang for buck that was the best choice. Read the reviews and do your own research this one does almost as well as others that are much more expensive.

Home wifi Mesh System - if you do not mind speed drop
29 July 2023

After reading all rave reviews about the home mesh system, I bought a 2-units. My apt is 2x 1bed combined. A 40' log hallway connecting the study at south end where cable service coming in and the kitchen at north end; only one solid wall (study) in between. I had had Spectrum internet/TV for years with Spectrum router and my 10-year old Netgear extender, never ever had wifi speed issue when service was on. Recently I decided to try my own home mesh system, so returned Spectrum router, big mistake. TP-Link was easy to set up - one unit as router in the study and the other as extender in the kitchen. But 10 day later I could not stream TV in the kitchen due to the internet speed was below 20 while Spectrum internet speed is over 500 mbps when connected directly with ... MoreAfter reading all rave reviews about the home mesh system, I bought a 2-units. Recently I decided to try my own home mesh system, so returned Spectrum router, big mistake. TP-Link was easy to set up - one unit as router in the study and the other as extender in the kitchen. But 10 day later I could not stream TV in the kitchen due to the internet speed was below 20 while Spectrum internet speed is over 500 mbps when connected directly with ethernet cable. Chat with TP-Link, I was told it is normal the speed drop to 40% after router. Followed the instruction from TP-Link, disconnect/reconnect, repeated reset for a couple of hours, the internet speed in the kitchen still below 20. I was told to move the extender to about 20' away from the router (with one solid wall in between), or buy 3rd unit. I was in such disbelief as the product description states coverage up to 3800 sf. My apt is little over 1000 sf. After 2 days without useable internet in the kitchen, I relocated the router out of study, to the south end of hallway with the extender at the same location in the kitchen (with no wall in between). The internet speed in the study (through one solid wall) via wifi signal from the router has speed 200-270, the speed the extender wifi is 50-100. I hope everyone reads my story will learn from my mistake. Only use wifi as last resort, when absolutely no way to run ethernet cable. No sales will tell you the truth about the speed drop. All TP-Link tech support would not admit the fact their products do not live up to their claim. I found similar stories to mine afterwards. It is a sad fact.

This system has exceeded my expectations. I recently switched ISPs and noticed immediately that the modem/router combo my new ISP provided wasn't great. I was getting close to the 100mbps I pay for while in the same room as my router, but upstairs on the opposite end of my 1400sq/ft home, I was getting less than half that and even experienced drops.I decided to purchase this 3-pack after a bit of research and I'm glad I did. I'm now getting consistent, reliable internet across my entire home. I'm getting more than what I pay for now; my download speeds are now 115-199mbps on wireless - anywhere in my home. We have approximately 24 devices on our network (laptop, desktop, tablets, phones, smart speakers, lights, thermostats, game consoles), many use 2.4ghz Wi-Fi and many use 5ghz. There were no issues connecting any of our devices. It's now crystal clear what each device is in the app, because I took the time to label each of them as I connected them. The optimization feature in the app works great as well. We have a lot of neighbours nearby, and one tap sets you up on the least congested Wi-Fi bands.Overall I think this is a great product for most families. If you need to do super advanced networking, it may not be for you. But if you're looking for no-BS, hassle-free, reliable Wi-Fi... look no further.

They explicitly say TP-link will not provide refund. And they seem only do replacement.I went to the source and when I returned the product, I was told TP-link will not allow refund/return. So they can not proceed . Until I called the source customer service, I then got the issue fixed. I am not blaming the source but TP-link instead. What a weird return policy, what a waste of this M5.Don’t buy this if you only need parental control.

Review of TP-LINK Deco M5 Whole Home WiFi System - Triple Pack
9 April 2024

The Wi-Fi is not that effective. It functions, that any normal Wi-Fi functions. The signal range is also not that great. From time to time you need to reset as the speed drops. When you reset, for few days it maintains the speed but later on it reduces although it doesn’t collide with any frequency on similar channel. It will does the job but not that effectively.

Review of TP-LINK Deco M5 Whole Home WiFi System - Twin Pack
15 June 2024

We had already purchased a triple pack of these Deco M5’s a couple of years ago, as our Virgin router gave us dead spots all over the house. These were really easy to set up, you use one M5 as a router and then place the other Deco’s around the house and it sets up a mesh bubble that covers the house. You can change it to your current network name and password, so you don’t need to re-add all your devices they just connect automatically. We’ve had perfect internet everywhere since. We have a garden bar at the far end of the garden which gets terrible phone signal and the wifi didn’t quite reach. We bought this 2 pack to add onto the others, and it’s so easy it’s all run by the DECO app. You just tell it you are adding another one and it does everything for you. We bought this 2 pack to add onto the others, and it’s so easy it’s all run by the DECO app. You just tell it you are adding another one and it does everything for you. We added these 2 in the conservatory and the bar (took 5 minutes) and we now have perfect wifi all down the garden and in the bar (which is brick and double glazed). You can check the app to see what devices are connected and you can also set up parental controls if you need this! You can test your speed too. Thoroughly recommend for busy internet usage heavy households, well worth the cost. I work from home all day every day and have not had one issue with connection since installing. You can even get the little light on them to turn off at night to stop it disturbing you if they are placed in bedrooms!
