Decent basic router for the average user

Once you do the basic setup on 192.168.0.1, there is another QR code and link to get the app, but it took me to the web page app store rather than my regular app based app store. If you scroll down just a bit, there are direct links to both the Android and Iphone downloads. You have to create a TP-Link ID in order to use the app. You don't need it if you use a computer or web browser and go directly to the 192.168.0.1 address. In any case, if you use the app, you will need to be connected to the TP Link wifi and then you can press the + in the upper right to add the device/router once you have the app running. As far as I can tell, you can't use the app for remote management. You will need to be connected to the unit's wifi. However, you can setup web browser remote management under Advanced>System>Remote Management. The default port is 8888. Once you enable and save that setting, you can get to your router if you have your WAN IP address (which I won't go into). The tether app is basic and limited. It directs you with a link to open a web browser to get to more than the very basic settings. However for most users, you don't need the advanced settings...at least not often. This unit has all the basic/expected settings from basic parental controls using keyword blocking to basic QOS. I did notice a few issues. 1) The QOS only went up to 100x100 mbps, which seemed a little odd, but realistically, if you have 100x100, do you really need QOS? I highly doubt it. For a home user/family, it would be highly unlikely that you could legitimately notice the difference unless you were looking at a speed test or rating of some kind, so I left it off, which was default. 2) I believe the WAN port (maybe the LAN ports too) and on this may only be 100x100 mbps because I can't get speeds higher than that on wifi or via Ethernet. Maybe there is a setting that I'm missing, but even if I am, your average home user wants it to work out-of-the-box. I tested this speed limitation with different Ethernet computers, different 5ghz devices and also at different locations on different providers. One was 1Gbps x 1Gbps the other was 1Gbps x 20Mbps. Maybe a firmware will fix this, but an AC1200 should do better than 100x100 mbps. Overall it is a decent basic router for the average user and will serve the average home/family well. I am scoring it based on it's intended audience. It isn't the most cutting edge B52 bomber unit like some unnecessarily overpowered units, but if you have a home connection of 100x100 mbps (which is more than most families could possibly use) or less, it's fine. The small footprint and power consumption is also a plus. I'm downgrading the rating because an AC1200 should be able to go faster, even if you don't really need it to do so, for regular usage. I don't yet see specific compatibility with dd-wrt yet, but I will definitely consider that in the future. I suspect support will be added soon, as many other TP-link routers have been supported for a long time. 3/5 stars, but if you have a 100x100 or less, 4/5 stars.

And it’s very light. I wouldn’t even need actual nails to hang this router up if I didn’t want to; just an idea how lightweight it is. The 3 options on this makes this a very flexible device. The first option being a router. Currently, I do not have any use for this as a router, but it’s nice to have this as an option when I want to change my home networking again. The second option is as an access point, which is good for offices with different departments; I also have no use for this and will probably never use this. The last option is as a range extender, which is what I mainly use it for. Setting up the range extender was fairly straightforward and easy, except the QR code on the back of the already small device was just too small for my camera to read clearly. I had to go to the manual to look up the instructions, but the instructions are actually a little outdated, so the option to change the device to range extender mode is not where it said it would be. But it is there somewhere in the Advanced Settings – which is where I expected it to be. After that, everything was set up in under 3 minutes. Then I just moved it near my deadzone to extend the range of my wifi signal, and I’m up and running. Easy as that. I actually really like this device so far. As it’s new, everything has been running really smoothly. It’s got 2.4GHz and 5GHz options, it’s small and easily moveable to any corner of my house, it’s flexibility is just amazing for such a small package and such a great price, and it’s connections are very stable so far. I haven’t had a single hiccup since I’ve had it for 2 weeks. I haven’t had to restart it at all (which realistically isn’t sustainable on the long run so I’ll be setting up a schedule to restart it every week). Of course, I don’t expect it to be perfect like this forever, but so far, I am extremely impressed to say the least. For how small it is, it sure packs a punch.

What annoying is that this router cannot maintain the connection, I keep getting disconnected and need to reconnect again. Everytime I need to reconnect, I have to type in the password again. So a bit of a hassle.

This is good sized light weight router that is easier than expected to do first time setups. Well designed for it offers on routing, extending wifi range as promised. Connect power adapter to router and then plug it in to power it on.Slowly all lights will turn green LED. Next connect network cable to your computer to avoid default router management page issues. The wifi range is good but speeds may be limited to the extent device offers so helps great as extender in most cases. You can also fix this to wall using couple of screws on wall and simply fitting ends. It is is a value for money and affordable for home range extension if there are stairs or garage far from isp access point.

I have been looking for a way to improve the WiFi bandwidth in my home, and this router was the perfect solution! I was a bit skeptical at first because of the product’s surprisingly small frame, but this little router packs a big punch. The setup takes seconds, and the easy-to-follow instructions manual anticipates any troubleshooting issues. The website you must visit to configure the router is very easy to use, and setting a password is quick and easy. I didn’t even need the Tether app to get my router set up, but the app might allow for better network management in the future. As for the performance of the router, it greatly improved my slow network connection, taking my speeds from 25mbps to upwards of 90mbps. As for the performance of the router, it greatly improved my slow network connection, taking my speeds from 25mbps to upwards of 90mbps. I tested mostly with a wireless connection, but there are plenty of LAN ports to make wired connection accessible too. This is a perfect router for streaming or signal boosting, and I love the 3-in-1 options for varied use - with router mode, access point mode (wired to wireless), and range extender capabilities. For parents, the router also has options to set time limits and controls on devices to protect privacy and prevent unwanted content. All in all, I love this router, and I will be looking to purchase TPLink products again soon!

Surprised!

As small as it is, this router Wi_fi box is great! We needed a new box and i selected this one as the price point is very reasonable along with being on the small side and taking up less room! The speed of the internet has increased and the range goes a lot farther then the previous ( name brand ) one. It is an easy set up and many devices can be hooked up to it and not bog down the streaming, especially if many are connected to the unit. This will show what devices are connected and the speeds they are using while using it. Sweet huh? Now you will know who's using what percentage! Anyhow, great box that gives you a lot of " Boost" when needed! Five people are running off this box if that helps! This is placed in the upstairs room and reaches the range of the whole ... MoreAs small as it is, this router Wi_fi box is great! This is placed in the upstairs room and reaches the range of the whole house ( 1500 sq feet ) a good sized range. It also can reach outside to a degree ( because of where it's placed, above) yet I imaging that if placed in a central location inn the home it will reach the backyard and front of the house. I will move it around a little more and see where and how far it can reach. Just right now it's set in an upper bedroom. great product indeed!!

tiny with huge range

Internet is pretty much a must-have utility in most houses, and unfortunately we usually have to tolerate the ugly boxes with blinking lights. This Archer unit is super tiny! It fits in the palm of anyone's hand and it was so easy to setup. If you've just got a simple modem, this can be your wifi router, and plug-in router. Alternatively, it can be an access point or as I am using it a range extender. My modem and wireless router must be in the front of the house so I put this unit in the middle to boost the signal all the way into the back yard and upstairs into the far corners of the house. This thing is fantastic for spreading full coverage of wifi throughout my house! The antennas are on a 90 degree hinge and can be rotated around. This thing is fantastic for spreading full coverage of wifi throughout my house! The antennas are on a 90 degree hinge and can be rotated around. So they can be configured in pretty much any orientation you'd like. the rear has 2 slotted screw mounts for a wall mount, however the box does not come with any screws or double sided tape. unfortunately I do not have fast enough internet to really benchmark this things speed, but for the great majority of users, they won't test the limits of wifi file transfers through this unit. Its more than fast enough for several phones, tablets, laptops, and smart home devices. If you need some longer wifi range the Archer C54 is a great addition to your network. If you need a quality router or access point, this is also your home solution. I've hidden mine behind a television but its blinking away back there giving me internet in the back yard far away from my modem.

works well for anything but gaming...

We are using our Tp Link 3 in 1 as an extender. Our router is built into our modem and it's located on one side of our house which gives our boys' bedrooms slow internet speed because of the distance. We placed the Tp Link extender half way between the modem and their rooms to boost their internet connection. I would suggest when doing the initial set up, use the ethernet to get started. I tried setting it up without and it was not successful. Set up was quicker and easier with the ethernet. The only issue we did have was when I was streaming a movie, it slowed down my son's internet speed drastically, and he lost connection a few times while he was playing his game. I would like to mention that this 3 in 1 Router has parental controls to manage and limit WiFi use. ... MoreWe are using our Tp Link 3 in 1 as an extender. I would not recommend using this as an extender for professional gaming purposes. But it does seem to work fine for anything else, for us.
