I purchased this TPLink 8port Gigabit Switch to replace a 5 port switch. The product was an easy swap. I just unplugged the cables from the old switch, removed the old switch, placed the new TPLink switch in place and plugged in the ethernet cables. As soon as I plugged in the power adapter, the switch connected to my modem/router and ethernet connections were made successfully.I have full 1 gigabit speeds on all ports. I encountered no problems with the install. This is a nice small switch that handles the job effortlessly. Now I have three additional ports. I'm using this switch on my entertainment center to provide internet connections to all my media equipment.

I initially purchased this based on an 5-port "box" model I had, which worked fine. I wanted the 8-port version of that, and I thought I was ordering it. Well, it wasn't the same exact design. It's an updated one apparently, and I had to use it because I was installing more devices. This would be great for a home-theater setup, but for a technical person, it falls short as it has only a power on indicator on the front. Connection lights are in the front, and to add further insult to prospective buyers, the product page displays ANOTHER VERSION of the same item. If you want some thing slick and nice, you can safely get this. However, I recommend against buying this until either TP-Link or Newegg gets their act together and settle on the correct product image or model ... MoreI initially purchased this based on an 5-port "box" model I had, which worked fine. Excellent product. I recently upgraded to an Amazon Eero and it only had 2 Ethernet ports. My previous router had 4 ports so I could easily connect other equipment to it. Due a lack of ports on the Eero, the TP Link network switch provided an excellent solution to the lack of ports on the Eero. I would highly recommend.

TP-LINK TL-SG1008D Unmanaged 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch is an easy to use ethernet switch. This device is being used to extend the number of ethernet ports that are available on my present router. This switch does not care what type of ethernet cables are used as it will automatically compensate for the ethernet cable connection type. This ethernet switch does not provide any LED's on each ethernet port that provide the information concerning the speed of the connection however there is a front panel LED for each of the 8 ports and they each blink independently indicating that the port communicating. There is also a front panel LED for power which does not blink. All of the LED's are the same color and are not too bright. This is an ethernet switch not a ethernet hub. If you switch ethernet cables around it will take under 20 seconds for the switch to establish the proper ethernet device connections so be patient if you switch ethernet cables when the switch is on. This is a very good and inexpensive ethernet switch.
Doesn't fuss when you set it up. Has a huge 16Gps max transfer overall, and yet still uses very little power due to its power saving features. Expect to pay twice as much for the same features on other brands. TP-Link isn't a well known brand, but home networking geeks definitely trust the name. I work in computer networking, trust me when I say this is worth every penny if you're looking for an unmanaged (basic use) switch.
