I’m so surprise that I have received different device. I’m supposed to received TL-WA850RE model based on my order but things is different because I had received TL-WA855RE. Seller please take note on this. For me, no issue since this device is working fine as per attached photo. Other than this, all ok in term of packaging & product is genuine. Thank you.

Cheap WI FI Extender that actually works

We had our TP-Link for approx 5 years before phones etc starting cutting out on our Fibre Network. Happy while it lasted. At times on a few occasions movies on Chrome-cast would cut out, but overall a great wee WiFi extender and did the job well. We have very poor WiFi capability and so we were very pleased that this cheap extender actually worked ok. Chrome-cast for TV & 2x Phones were set up on this extender through the Tether App and all worked great. We recently purchased WiFi speakers & Sub and found that they kept cutting out. In my opinion if you are wanting to set up more than 3 appliances then you will need to get a better WI-FI Extender as this T-P Link can’t handle a lot of connections. As I mentioned Great for a couple of phones and a Chromecast but more than that appliances start to cut out. Tether App was the easiest method to set this extender up for us. We had ours installed in the kitchen at the opposite end of the house from the router, worked best for us there. 5 stars because it worked well, easy set up & affordable. Shame you can’t add more than one to get better coverage etc.

Easy to setup and does what is says on the proverbial tin!

First of all it comes with straight forward instructions on how to set it up. Best of all it is really easy to setup. There are three different ways to do that, I picked the simplest, press the WPS button. It was setup in minutes. My house is not that big to be able to say what the range is like, however I was having problems due to the number of walls the signal needed to pass through. I positioned the extender in the centre of the house and all parts of the house can access the booster. I cannot say how fast it operates as my gaming PC's are all connected using a ethernet cable. At some point I might be adventurous enough to try it. The signal strength indicator on the booster makes it simple to ensure the location you have chosen is suitable. Good product, comes in multiple hardware versions.
10 March 2018

There are three hardware versions of this product. Versions 4, 2, and 1.2. They all look the same. I received version 1.2 of the hardware that lacks some firmware features available on later hardware. I would likely rated this a four based on ease-of-use and performance in my application, taking a point away for the poor location of the ethernet connector. Physical: the unit is lightweight and fairly compact. Depending on what you need to plug in, it may or may not impede using the other socket in a common U.S. wall outlet. The position of the ethernet connector is not ideal, however. If you plug in an ethernet cable, it hangs down and restricts the ability to plug anything except small plugs (like for a table lamp) or special low profile plugs into the other ... MoreThere are three hardware versions of this product. The position of the ethernet connector is not ideal, however. If you plug in an ethernet cable, it hangs down and restricts the ability to plug anything except small plugs (like for a table lamp) or special low profile plugs into the other socket. Version details: The latest hardware version is version 4 and version 2 seems well supported. If you go to the manufacturer's support site, the latest firmware update for v1.2 is from 2014, whereas for v2 and v4 hardware, the latest updates are from 2017. Based on the online user guides from the manufacturer, it appears that the v1.2 firmware features are significantly different in the user interface and lack some features for turning the repeater off based on time of day and some other low level settings. I wound up with version 1.2 of the hardware and a unit that lacked a serial number. If this matters to you and the information is not provided in the listing you may want to check or ask the seller about the h/w version and serial number before purchasing. Use and performance: Set up was easy and I didn't need any of the later firmware features that are not available on v1.2. I bought the unit to use as an Ethernet bridge rather than a repeater. The repeater says I'm getting a 40% signal level from my router. Using wireless N I get a 144 Mbps wifi connection. Checking my outside internet access, I get about 1 to 2.5 Mbps drop in download throughput from going through the repeater. Reliability: For my version of the hardware, I've found that the unit keeps the connection although I have on a couple of occassions found the unit blinking in some error mode after a couple of weeks of operation. When this occurred, unplugging and replugging the unit restores operation. Keeping the unit in an accessible location where you can see the status lights is probably a good idea. The newer hardware versions may be better. I don't know. Closing: Overall, the unit was a very good value for what I needed. It has been generally reliable and gives good performance as an Ethernet bridge. While boughtit to use as a bridge, as a bonus the unit does boost the signal to areas where I didn't have wifi before - mainly the back yard and in the far corners of my garage.

Great product, but NOT for Macs
13 January 2018

The TL-850RE Range Extender from TP-Link (also known as their N300 Range Extender) is a great product for extending the Wi-Fi range of Windows computers, iPhones, iPads and possibly others devices. However it does NOT work for Macs or Kindle - it will not connect them as wifi clients. In the case of the Mac, this is due to a well-known long-standing problem with the TL-WA850RE which results in a message about WPA2 passwords (even though the correct password was entered). TP-Link have failed to address this widely-reported fault for some years. However, this is a great product for Windows and other devices - just *not* Macs and Kindles. It uses the common 2.4GHz band (not the 5.0GHz band) and has excellent signal strength. It has a lot of configuration options (Range Extender mode, Access Point mode, DHCP Auto/On/Off, an ethernet cable port) but its wifi network password must be the same as that of the network it is extending. It can have its own SSID (recommended for technical and sanity reasons) or the same SSID as the network it is extending. The TL-WA850RE device's internal configuration website can be supplemented with a smart phone app from TP-Link.TP-Link's website also has firmware updates to address bugs and security vulnerabilities. And yet their otherwise-excellent range extenders do NOT work with Macs or Kindles.

Great value, nice setup app and easy to use.

Why pay more? This does the job well and the free setup app is easy to use. SETUP Three methods to set this up in your current WiFi network. If you have a WPA button on your router this method is the simplest. If not then get the free Tether app and use it to set the device up. This is a nice app giving you access to the settings of the WA850 Extender. The app sets the WA850 Extender up as a Range Extender by default. This is the setting most people want as it extends your current WiFi across the router and this WA850 Extender. You can use it as an Access Point instead and this would be useful if you have cabled internet but need to add WiFi to it (the access point). You can use it as an Access Point instead and this would be useful if you have cabled internet but need to add WiFi to it (the access point). One thing that caused me some problems was that the app names the WA850 Extender the same as your router but with "_EXT" added to the name. This effectively splits your wifi into two different access points with their own IP Addresses. What most people want is to simply have a good signal wherever they walk in their homes and to get this you must manually rename the WA850 Extender to the EXACT name your router uses. Once you do this the Extender will invisibly and seamlessly take over when you are close to it and you get a good signal everywhere. Your phone/tablet/laptop can have the strongest signal wherever you are although the IP Address will change as you move between the two transmitters. (This will only matter if you are a developer and wish the IP to remain stable.) So... name the WA850 Extender unit the same as your router and they effectively become one. The Tether app is excellent. Apart from allowing you to 'pair' the WA850 Extender with your Router you also have access to the extender's settings. I found this most useful as I have the extender in a bedroom and one of the settings can turn off the bright LEDs at nighttime. I was expecting to have to put tape over them for night use.

VERY NICE ( READ )
24 October 2023

I commend the outstanding quality of this product, which bears the trusted TP-LINK brand. It comes with my wholehearted recommendation. Should you be in the market for a home networking solution, I suggest looking into the TP-LINK Extender, boastingthe option of 2 or 4 signals, making it an excellent choice for domestic environments. However, if your needs extend to a more sophisticated work-related network setup, there are alternative solutions worth considering. Thanks Noon!

Works great as Powerline wifi average
6 January 2017

This unit is a bit bulky, I did not focus much on wifi but more on testing the powerline results; the unit has no external antennas this probably why the wifi is average at best, but since you have the ability to do powerline and give wifi in areas where other routers cannot give a good wifi signal. Tested this unit vs Netgear AV500 and the TP-Link AV1200. Netgear AV500 at router and TP-Link AV500 (TL-WPA4220) got 3 ms ping few random up to 5ms but the through output nearly maxed of my internet 61-65Mbps (65Mbps max best). TP-Link AV500 at router TP-Link AV1200 at computer : Ping 2 ms constant to router; internet 61-65Mbps, so it seems that TP-Link devices are either better than the Netgear AV500 or they just work better with each other. In conclusion this unit is nice for what it can do, which is bring you connectivity in areas that your regular router has issues reaching to, another interesting fact about powerline devices is how much more stable your connection is and how constant the ping is vs wifi, I would watch the test results and see the wifi from router to my desktop go up and down throughout and ping to router through wifi would have quite the sporadic jumps in latency, this is with high 250-300Mbps connections, and the internet test speed varies from 57-65Mbps. What I noticed on all the powerlines is that they have most of the time constant ping or when mixing powerline technologies AV with AV2 a small increase in latency which is constant between 2-6ms were wifi would jump to 15ms and higher at times. If you are gaming or doing anything that is critical with latency a powerline is as close to an ethernet connection as you can get. For the price this unit can bring solid wifi for small to medium demand devices, its not 5ghz and not 1200Mbps speeds but for your average devices it will do better than the poor or none existent wifi connection from a router in a dead spot area.
