This is a great idea for homeschooling children and science you set up the farm in a couple weeks later the ants come but when mine came I accidentally dropped the open tube on the floor it didn’t fit onto the cage real well! My child was traumatized and we had to throw the whole thing away! My son had this when he was younger and I thought it be OK for his sister and it wasn’t

the "farm" itself is ok. It's a good size and comes with gear like sand, little tube for transfering ants, etc. BUT it's a bit overpriced. The online code for ordering ants doesn't work for anyone buying at Canadian Tire (they don't ship ants to Canada.). So, you'll have to go out and capture ants yourself to populate the colony.

I taught second grade for many years and had this Ant Farm in the classroom. It is the same, except this version is far smaller than it used to be. Otherwise it is nice. I purchased this one for a great niece who is excited by ants and their antics.

I had one of these ant farms when I was a kid. I loved it. I bought one for each of my twin daughters families so our grandkids could have them and enjoy them, too. Great science gift for kids.
Perfect! My preschoolers had a great time catching ants and watching them in their farm through magnifying glasses. They talked and talked to both the teacher and other students while observing the ants. Great vocabulary builder, and wonderful for sharing with friends!
It arrived on time and the child receiving it was excited. However, the ant farm itself is very narrow, so when the ants tunnel, the sand falls back onto the tunnels and it fills up. The ants go about their activities but it's all above the sand. The main purpose of getting the ant farm was to watch what the ants do in their tunnels, but that doesn't seem like he's going to experience that.
It is small and not very useful for a colony. There is a code to use for ordering the ants but it is a US site and ONLY delivers within the US. You need to purchase ants elsewhere or capture your own ants. Not bad for the price when it's on sale and if you were going to capture your own ant for a beginner.
Easy to maintain. Ants do all the work, you just keep them fed, and they do the rest. They build their own housing, their own cemetery, everything the need. Make sure their location doesn't include direct sunlight! They don't naturally live underground for no reason.
Mine came in a very nondescript box with "Ant Farm" on it... in addition to more text. NO PICTURE of the ant farm on the front. Why complain about the box, you say?!Because this is for a child's birthday present, and the picture on the front "introduces" the ant farm, and lets you get an idea of how it will look when it is all set up with ants... it gives one something to anticipate and shoot for.For a child who loves ants, just seeing a nondescript box and then the bare ant farm inside.... it will look like some boring thing that will not spark any initial interest. Therefore I gave it 3 stars.
Smaller than I thought it would be. Had to buy a second one to have room for all the ants. It comes apart easily so be careful. The ants they send were really to big for the size of farm I got. Will find some smaller ants outside after the few left die. The ants kept getting stuck in between the decorations in the farm and then they would die. The small ant farm isn't worth the money better to pay more and get the big one, that way the ants should fit better and not get stuck. Also had a terribly hard time putting the ants in the farm. You are warned, and they do bite... My brother had one growing up and it was a lot bigger then the ones I got. The ants fit and had plenty of room to tunnel and live.
