There aren't many products or brands that have been embraced in the same style, or with the same amount of love, as the Vegemite brand has been. The Vegemite brand has a history spanning nearly 90 years. Its story began in 1922 when the Fred Walker Company, which would later become Kraft Food Company, hired a young chemist to develop a spread from one of the richest known natural sources in the Vitamin B group – brewer's yeast. After months of laboratory tests, Dr. Cyril P Callister, Australia's leading food technologist of the 1920s and 30s, developed a tasty, spreadable paste. It was labeled ‘Pure Vegetable Extract'. There's a reason over 22 million jars of Vegemite spread are sold every year and it's because there's no other concentrated spread out there so full of Vitamin B and nutrients, so pleasing to the palate and so intrinsically linked with Australia's past and future as the Vegemite brand. Vegemite spread is virtually fat-free, with no artificial colors or flavors, and has absolutely no added sugar. It is suitable for vegetarians, is kosher and halal certified and contains rich sources of thiamine, riboflavin, and niacin. The B Vitamins in Vegemite spread assist in converting carbohydrates, proteins and fats in food into much needed energy and are also important for proper functioning of the nervous system, muscles and brain. Folate aids in producing red cells in the body and niacin helps to maintain healthy skin and a healthy digestive tract. Delicous, nutritious, Vegemite is a powerhouse food your whole family will love! Certified Kosher and Halal.

As an American, I had only heard references to this stuff. Deep discount due to the printed date, (this is one of those foodstuffs that last way past their promted date as long as the jar stays sealed) I find it best on buttered toast or as a base for a rich ramen broth. We're still on the first jar so this stuff will probably last us until the next regime change ðŸ˜

I find marmite too heavily salted, like salty molasses, with a bit of an aftertaste, and I was convinced that I didn't like yeast extracts until I tried vegemite. It's not marmite, it's better. Not quite so overwhelmingly salty, and no lingering aftertaste. Try it, but don't expect marmite!

The best yeast extract out there! Marmite is just weird and far too runny. The trick with Vegemite is that you only need a small scrape dont slather it on like its jam!

I am a transplanted Aussie and cannot live without Vegemite. Can't resist deals when B/B date is past. Vegemite contains so much salt.......never goes off!!!!!
I’m a Vegemite kid from the cradle to the grave. My children and I eat it most days on our morning toast. After relocating to the USA 20 years ago we brought a catering tub with us and we pleaded with friends and family to bring the biggest jar they could find. What a delight it is to have TBFD supply this in bulk to us!!
....so says the Mail in Australia, so at the current very attractive Ocado offer price, I thought I?d see what all the fuss was about... This spread is along the same lines as Marmite, but it?s not Marmite and has a different taste. Last night I made the mistake of putting a little too much Vegemite on a crumpet and the taste wasn?t very appealing. The trick is to not slather it on like you would jam. It should be lightly scraped onto a buttered slice of toast, toasted bagel, crumpet etc. The butter / margarine gives the Vegemite a base to make it more spreadable, and also I find, makes the taste more palatable. Today I put small dots of Vegemite around my toasted buttered bagel then scraped it about. There are pictures online to show the light recommended consistency for beginners like me. Believe me, it?s worth sticking with. Once you get the preparation right, a warm, freshly toasted buttered bagel with a scraping of Vegemite (along with your favourite cup of coffee) is so moreish and addictive. It?s that, ?I?ll just have one more slice?, and you won?t stop till your full. There?s a thing I?ve heard on Australian ABC radio (Dr. Karl?s Science Hour), where nutritionist Professor Clare Collins recommends putting the Vegemite in the fridge because of cross-contamination with the butter or margarine that?s used with it. I don?t keep my Vegemite in the fridge because I avoid cross-contamination. I take what portion I need of Vegemite for that slice with a teaspoon and then take it off the teaspoon with the same knife I used to butter the slice. This avoids getting any butter inside the Vegemite jar. The Vegemite taste is a salty twang, with (as long as you?ve used it lightly), a moreish sharpness with a kind of slight beery aftertaste. Lastly, in 1939 Vegemite was officially endorsed by the British Medical Association as a rich source of B vitamins. Higher intakes of B vitamins have been linked to lower levels of stress and anxiety. Anyways...Vegemite is so moreish, and just a scrape is needed. Hope this helps!
Vegemite and Marmite are two different things. Vegemite is superior, it's saltier, stronger and thicker. Marmite is runny, sticky and a bit sweeter. I much prefer Vegemite and now all my friends and housemates do too. Marmite is fine in a pinch but Vegemite is the winner, hands down. Key is butter ratio on hot toast - you need half the amount of Vegemite on your knife as compared to when you use Marmite and lots of butter. Also great as a base with poached egges or melted cheese or even smashed avo & tomato. DROOL.
Vegemite is great for expat Aussies for many reasons. Hangover cure, winter warmer, stew flavouring and misty eyed memories of horrifying your children making butter and Vegemite worms through salada and vitawheat crackers. Also use in place of butter on toast with avocado and tomato. Non Australians often get a bad, if hilarious, introduction of trying a mouthful on a spoon. Don't do that. Toast some thick toast, spread butter on and then spread a light scraping. You may find that soon you are adding a bit more. Yum. hmm. ...leaves computer and puts toast on....
Stick with marmite. Perhaps I got a bottle from a dodgy. batch but they have definitely changed Vegemite and mine tastes like paint and had a nasty chemical aftertaste. Had to bin it and go back to trusty marmite
as someone who thinks that marmite is merely ok i am always trying different yeast extracts. tried vegemite, expecting good things but no. its weird: the flavour is both strong and bland at the same time, with an aftertaste which i can only describe as soapy. extremely unpleasant.please ocado: start stocking Essentials Vitam-R, the only truly wonderful yeast extract.
