I have been playing drums for about 5 months after switching from trumpet for Jazz band at my high school. Decided to get new sticks since the ones i was using weren't in the best condition. These are awesome. lightweight and easy to play around with. Great sound coming from them. Would totally recommend.

I was always a 5A player but loved the feel of Jojo Mayer's signature stick - the only downside was it was too short for my liking. I feel like the AJ1 has a similar bounce and control but with the length that I prefer. I find that my hands don't get as fatigued as when I'd use a 5A, probably because these are closer to a 5B in thickness and my hands are probably better fit to that size. I love that I can play dynamically when I'm in the studio, but can also smash when needed.I can see these not lasting if you tend to death-grip your sticks - the neck is too thin to use without a loose grip technique. But as always, VF surpasses my expectations with quality.

I discovered the Rock model and now my life is much easier and great 🤘🏻Great 2B diameter and weight, with 16.63" for the Extreme feel and a short taper for power and durability. For years I loved the Acorn tips in the American Classic 5B, X55B and 2B but now I really appreciate the Oval shaped tip... This tip is has a full, dark and powerful sound for rock music or metal. This a well balanced and powerful stick for the heavy hitters.Definitely would buy them again, this is my new favourite model right now!

Great for Tunebot
14 August 2021

I had noticed that some people use drum stick mallets when tuning their drums, so I was glad to find a stick that had both a regular tip and a mallet end. Never knew they existed till I happened to see them on display at Sam Ash. I have always had problems using to Tunebot on the snare side of my snare drums, just would never get consistent readings past about 320. Now with this dual function stick, I can finally get good consistent readings in the high 300s, where lots of folks recommend for the snare side head. So I highly recommend this product, especially if you use a Tunebot to tune your drums.

Great length and balance
26 May 2022

My go-to sticks. 17 inch length makes it far easier to move around the kit without becoming unstable on my drum throne. The taper makes the balance point very forgiving. PS Hopefully the backorder will eventually be filled. Very hard to find these sticks now and Sweetwater lists them as no longer available. :-(

Great stick for a singing drummer needing reach.
11 May 2021

I purchased this stick to be my main gigging stick for a Blues Band I am presently playing with. We are the House Band at a local tavern, playing blues and rock outside on a patio setting. I am playing on a Taye Go Kit which is amplified with Sennheiser mics, so I don't have to hit especially hard. These sticks are perfectly balanced to be able hold them a bit higher when I require a reach on the top most reaches of my ride cymbal ( for effect), but still allow for a great "crack" when using my snare rims for a bigger sound, without sacrificing feel in the hand. The tip hits in the perfect spot. I have yet to test their durability, but I'm sure Vic Firth's usual quality will result in a decent life for a stick. I must add, that I sing lead behind the kit at times, ... MoreI purchased this stick to be my main gigging stick for a Blues Band I am presently playing with. Heavier is better for control and speed
26 September 2019

The features I like:- The weight and length are perfect for fast stuff: If you look at drummers in the more "technical" bands (Gojira, Archspire, The faceless, ...) you will see a tendency to go to this kind of heavy sticks because of the bounciness. As a result, the up motion of the sticks is effortless and the motion is smoother. I prefer the lenght of the "metal" more than the "rock" version even though I'm not a tall/heavy guy.- Nylon tip: It's a must for durability- Sound: Thanks to the weight, you don't have to play hard. You can be more relaxed and it sounds at full volume easily. I feel like it also expand your dynamic range of volume by increasing the loudest note you can do.The feature I don't like:- The price is fairly expensive and even though it's ... MoreThe features I like:- The weight and length are perfect for fast stuff: If you look at drummers in the more "technical" bands (Gojira, Archspire, The faceless, ...) you will see a tendency to go to this kind of heavy sticks because of the bounciness. But if the stick is breaking it also means that it's absorbing vibration that your wrist would endure. This is why I would never go to stiffer sticks anyways.

Horrible pitching.
22 December 2022

While I would love to say these were great, they were not. They were the worst pair of sticks I have touched in my near 8 years of drumming. I bought them online as a gift, since the stores near me did not stock them. They sounded horrible on arrival. The pitches between sticks are nearly a major third off from each other. They felt incredibly light and cheap. And to top off the horrible pair, one had that tell tale sound of being cracked. It was a disappointment and near embarrassment to be coming from such a respected brand.

NOVA sticks used to be a good value
27 April 2019

These sticks used to be a good value back when you could buy a 12 pair brick for less than 30. I've been using the NOVA 5AN for 10+ years. THE GOOD: For me, the weight and feel is just right. I play in a rock cover band and I'm not a light hitter. A pair of these sticks can last me through 2-3 four hour gigs. They don't break, they just eventually start splintering after a few thousand rim shots on my snare. THE BAD: These were a good deal when you could buy in quantity and they were only about two fifty or less per pair. In a 12 pair brick I would usually find 2-3 sticks that were warped, the rest were usually near perfect. Now at over five a pair I'm looking elsewhere for sticks. I've tried several Vic Firth models, but haven't found one with the same weight and feel as the NOVA 5AN. BTW, in the description, they make it sound like these are Vic Firth sticks that have been rejected, but in actuality these are just a lower quality product that Vic Firth/Zildjian company manufactures. Vic Firth sticks are guaranteed to be straight, so I wrote to them about receiving warped NOVA sticks and this is their exact reply "The NOVA sticks are our economy line of drumsticks and they don't go through the same quality control process as our premium line of sticks (which would go through vigorous quality checks to ensure a perfect pair). The NOVA sticks are weight matched and sleeved." ....So, be aware that NOVA does not reject the warped sticks from the factory.

Vic firth 55A
13 December 2022

Vic firth sticks are top quality. However, I bought the 55a to get a stick slightly lighter then the 5b that I normally use. The 5b is a 16x.590 The 55a is suppose to be a 16x.580 but in fact measured .585 in thickness...so I gained nothing...the 55a where acually a little heavier and slightly more beefy near the tip and were not made to spec. Stick with the 5b's at least you can get them with the option of a nylon tip. if you want something between a 5a and but closer to a 5b this is not it.
