The Explorer is my favorite Swiss Army Knife for every day carry in town and around the house. It does most of the innumerable small tasks that arise during the day, e.g., opening packages and mail, cutting cords, thread, etc., loosening and tightening screws, making small holes with the awl, opening bottles and cans, opening wine bottles and loosening jammed knots with the corkscrew, reading fine print and looking at small objects with the magnifying glass, etc., etc. I keep the blades razor sharp (arm-shaving sharp) for whittling and small cutting tasks on most non-metallic materials. So it does a lot of daily things I need to do quickly, without carrying a toolbox or going on a hunting expedition for the screwdriver, scissors, etc. All of the tools included are ... I previously had an Explorer several years ago, but my ex-wife absconded with it ! I have a Super Tinker model that has been with me for over 30 years and it is still good, but it lacks the capabilities of this new Explorer model which seems capable of almost anything, although I haven't attempted an appendectomy with it (yet)! An added bonus of this new one is the included Leather Clip Pouch which goes easily on and off my belt, but keeps the knife handy and secure! For everyday Urban-Suburban and Domestic use, this Explorer is clearly the best Swiss Army Knife model for me. For more rugged outdoor activities, Hiking, Camping, Fishing, etc. this knife is too delicate - for outdoor rambling I carry the Swiss Army Trekker model (with plain blade, NOT serrated), which is more heavily built for rougher work and is excellent for the outdoors!

The Huntsman Wood I purchased replaced a previous Huntsman I had for over 18 years that served me well all that time and would have lasted at least another 18 yrs had I not dropped it into the sea whilst sailing.I really like feel of the wood finish on the new Huntsman and the overall finish and quality of the knife are outstanding as I expected it to be with a superior Victorinox product. The blades and tools on my new new Huntsman are identical to my old knife, now resting in peace on the seabed, with the exception of not having the integral tweezer and toothpick - both items I frequently used with my original knife.

Similar to the Climbers Knife the Huntsman has an additional twig/branch saw making is slightly larger and heavier. Very handy when traveling but don't forget to pack it in your checked luggage. Most people don't realize the tool on the upper right is actually an old style can opener. This is slow to use but very, very handy if you don't have one. The scissors are very sharp and also very handy as is the cork screw if you like wine and the bottle opener is very handy for beer and other bottled beverages. There is a wire bender, leather punch, tooth pick and excellent tweezers that are good for thorns and glass fragments. I have several of these of various types that I keep in the car, kitchen, workshop and work. There are other brands of pocket knives but Victorinox ... I have owned about 10 of these knivesEvery few years I loose one. I can go about 3 days before I have to buy another one.I use this knife several times every dayThe layout is perfectThe Philips comes out of the end so you can get good torque. The blades are sharp and keep an edge. All the tools work great and I use them all even the hook which was a surprise when it came out. The older I get I find I use the magnifying glass more and more. The workman ship is excellent and has always been so. I have never had one break in anyway.I can’t recommend it enoughAnd don’t forget the corkscrew which I use almost everydayIn my mind combination of tools and size make this the best model
If You are looking at the Explorer, You are probably interested in a not to heavy knife with a pair of scissors, a Phillips and a magnifying glass.*** Compared to the Super Tinker:You might also have looked at the Super Tinker. It has got a pair of scissors and a Phillips, and has got a lower weight: 84 g (3 layers). But it hasn't got a magnifying glass. And the inline Phillips of the Explorer model is more handy.*** Compared to the Evolution 23:You might also have been looking at the Evolution 23 model, which has got a pair of scissors and a magnifying glass. The Evolution 23 has got a more robust pair of scissors, since the spring of the pair of scissors of the Explorer is somewhat sensitive to damage. The Evolution 23 has got a more robust pair of scissors, since the spring of the pair of scissors of the Explorer is somewhat sensitive to damage. It has also on the magnifying glas got a more extended small screwdriver, 3.5 mm, more useful than the very short version on the can opener of the Explorer. But it misses the Phillips - the magnifying glass being unnecessarily extended and using up the space where the Phillips is situated in the Explorer. And it has also got a wood saw, which makes it even heavier: 110 g (5 layers).*** Compared to the Yeoman:So the Explorer is for the present moment the best solution if You want a pair of scissors, a Phillips and a magnifying glass. But it is unnecessarily heavy: 101 g (4 layers). There was earlier a model called the Yeoman. It had got all the funktions of the Explorer, but compressed into 3 layers, weighing 85 g, by using the combination tool (bottle opener + can opener + big screw driver) of the Compact model and only one knife blade, only missing the small screwdriver, 3 mm. But this is nevertheless to short for most applications. So the Yeoman would be an even better choice. I hope Victorinox soon will reintroduce it in production.*** Finishing remarks:Maybe Victorinox could even consider using the more robust pair of scissors from the Evolution series in the Yeoman. And complement it with a long small screwdriver (2-3 mm) at the backside, a micro screwdriver in the corkscrew, and a pin. That would make the perfect knife.
The knife is well made and functions great. The only gripe I have to complain about is the cheap nylon sheath with a clip on it. This sheath should not of even been put in the package with the knife because I consider it an insult to the quality of the knife itself. It does not stay snapped, it is poorly stitched cheap nylon and the belt clip is totally useless as it does not stay on a belt if you bend, move or just slightly catch it on something. I will be quickly replacing the sheath with an a better aftermarket one so I don't loose this quality multi tool knife which I know I will with this sheath. I think Victorinox could have done much better on a cloth or leather sheath then this one because it is simply useless. Why make a quality knife and then throw in a ... A Christmas present for my granddaughter. We all carry one, the kids call them Handy dandies 🤠. She was so excited to get one. My ice started it years ago when she was in Switzerland and brought one home for me. I got one for my daughter to stop her from borrowing mine then one to me grandson and last summer I treated my wife to her own. So we love em. I have dressed mine with and Arkansas stone and used it at work. Guy would borrow it an could never understand how it was so sharp.
In my view, The Huntsman is ideal for anytime you're hiking or in a generally more outdoors setting. It's pretty lightweight considering all its features, and is well thought out overall. Also fits easily in a pocket and is fairly unobtrusive, especially with the addition of a pocket clip (I recommend Key Smart). The two knives are both pretty standard drop point SAK fare. I actually use the small knife for eating fruit and such. The larger blade I use for camp tasks typically. Both hold an edge well and are easy to sharpen. For some reason, the smaller blade is always just a little sharper than the big one.I've used the saw a few times. Any woid which has a diameter roughly equal to the saw blades length is a good candidate for using this saw. In my opinion, ... Any woid which has a diameter roughly equal to the saw blades length is a good candidate for using this saw. In my opinion, although crazy sharp, it's really built for durability rather than flexibility. What that basically means us it'll chew through wood, but it'll grab every so often as well. Something to be aware of. I'd spend a little tine getting comfortable with the saw before potentially finding yourself in a situation where you need it. The back of the blade can also be used with fire steels. The can/bottle opener duo is a classic. Can't go wrong with either, and you also get the wire stripper and drivers with them. The hook is useful for moving firewood IMO. I don't understand why this one doesn't come with the nail file on the back, and that's a minor knock. One more serious knock on this hook. The actual hook end is too close to the keyring hole, and that makes it very difficult to open up.The awl is really useful for it's intended purpise, and also as a straight up gimlet and can be used with a fire steel as well. Plus it's useful for camp sewing. The corkscrew I use to hold a tinder twist from Tortoise gear along with an eyeglass driver. There is a slot under the corkscrew that holds a pin to remove splinters, sim cards, etc...not included for some reason. I do recommend buying a pin to fill the slot. They can be useful. The toothpick I replaced with a Tortoise Gear fire steel. However, there is a quirk with the Huntsman that allows you to actually have both. Next to the scissors is a gap that is perfectly sized to hold the toothpick perfectly snug, and in my experience, the toothpick never comes loose in my pocket or what have you.The tweezers are great for what they are.I really like this blade for hiking and camping.
All-in-all is quite good for the city, but I think that for the plus scales could be better. Also the magnifying glass can fall out easily, pay attention to it.But my main complain about this knife is the phillips screwdriver. It is way too big. In my mind if I have a SAK with a philips screwdriver I should be able to take apart my laptop, a keyboard, a mouse or some other toys, but with this one it is impossible (except if I file down most of the tip). I also have an Outrider, and the screwdriver on that is fantastic. I can screw almost every phillips scews with that (laptop, keyboard, door, even a wrist watch). I would like to have the screwdriver from the Outrider on this. Also most of the things that this big screwdriver can do, can be done with the can opener ... I have been using my huntsman for over 10 years now and this is the one constant throughout all my ventures into the wild - be it the dense hot jungles of India, the Nordic woodlands and mountains or the unforgiving Himalayan hikes. The most useful tools for me personally have been the knife, saw, scissors, can opener and awl. Recently i have upgraded the fireant kit to this tool and augmented its functionality. The testament of my recommendation for this product is that i have gifted it to most of my hiking buddies and everyone loves it.Suggestions - bring back the blue colour version - though most of us have custom scales, blue would be a good colour for wilderness explorations as it is easier to find. Please never retire it!
