Closest to an Ac30 yet!

Great bit of kit. Been kept simple and true to the design of an Ac30. Jangly clear cleans when gain is down, breaks up nice turning the gain up and reacts really well if you stick a decent treble booster in front or even overdrive. Could do with an effects send and return but this is a common comment. I use it with a Line 6 M13 at the mo from the line out of the MV50. Highly recommend for Brian May, Eric Johnson, Beatles, Hank Marvin, etc

I'm running this through a 1x12 Bugera cab (which to my ear is a pretty neutral speaker, but sounds great). Unless your band plays way too loud this amp should give you enough volume for gigging (even at 25 watts through an 8 ohm speaker). Takes pedals well - all of my drive pedals sound great. The MV50 reacts like my tube amps with a boost pedal in front (Fulltone & Xotic).I really like the attenuator, and at home I play at 1/100 power with the volume at about noon. While this amp has a lot of clean headroom you will start to get some hair when you push it, but in a good way. It's the kind of sound where you can play clean by picking lightly but if you hit it hard you'll hear that you're on the edge of breakup. Not surprising for a Vox, this is not a mid-scooped ... MoreI'm running this through a 1x12 Bugera cab (which to my ear is a pretty neutral speaker, but sounds great). Mids are present, but not pushed. It is a warm clean, not sterile or spikey at all to my ear.I've been playing this primarily with a Boss Fender reverb pedal and the tone really is glorious. I don't feel like I'm missing anything from my tube amps. Not a thing. I wish I'd had this thing years ago when I was throwing my back out moving 60lb tube amps to and from gigs. What I don't like. The unit feels very solid, seems like a quality piece of gear, but the mini chicken head knobs on the front feel cheap (a minor complaint). Mainly I don't like how much they have crammed on the back panel. You've got tiny switches for power, flat/deep, eco (shuts it off after 15 min. of non-use) and the attenuator, as well as headphone/line out & speaker out. Once you get a speaker cable plugged in it feels very cramped. I'd much rather that the power switch was on the front.Lastly, I wish I could get 50 watts @ 8 ohms, just for the headroom. This is giggable for me at 25 watts into 8 ohms & still gives you good headroom, but YMMV. I primarily use single coils. With hot humbuckers I don't know if you'd run out of clean headroom or not. With all 50 watts you'd be fine, I'm sure.

First - let me say that this is a good, tiny pedal-platform amp, if that's what you're looking for. It has a very good base clean tone and it takes pedals well. I think most players looking to downsize would find this usable. If all you need is a good clean tone - for jazz, say - take a listen to one of these.I find the 4 ohm thing a bummer. I don't own any 4 ohm cabs, and after thinking about jumping through hoops to get all 50w available to me, I decided it wasn't worth it. This amp sounds really good, but at the very least for clean headroom, anyone looking for a pedal platform usually wants to control where the edge of breakup is, or have it totally clean.Beyond that, there's just too much crammed onto the (very small) back of the amp. It's more versatile with 3 band EQ, and I have a full 50w to play with. Overall I prefer the DV Mark - I just feel it suits my clean & light OD tones better than the Vox. But if I had to gig with the Vox I'd be OK with it.Having said that, several months ago I came across a great deal on a Blues Cube Hot EL84 (more Vox-ish tone than the standard) and frankly, it blows the other two away. It's a combo, of course. So I'm keeping the DV Mark as a backup. The Vox has gone.Anyone looking to downsize should give one of these a listen. There is good to great tone in there, depending on your needs. Again - the 4 ohm load to get 50w is a bummer. But not everyone needs that much power. The small box is pretty cute and a cool conversation starter - but for practical purposes something slightly larger would've been a better idea, IMO.

Great 4 practice thru headphones
29 May 2019

I bought this amp as I have occasional gigs that require low volume and minimal gear. Testing out with HEADPHONES with gain totally off. it is spectacular. Great bass without muddiness, great highs without harshness. Very pro clean, balanced sound. Unfortunately this sound doesn't transfer to a gig rig situation. I set it up for a gig through an 8 ohm V30 loaded cab, giving 25 watts of power, and within minutes of playing I realised that it just hasn't got the power even for a small gig. Luckily I had my CRATE and switched over to it to save the day. Conclusion: Great practice amp especially through headphones. Not really loud enough to gig (Maybe through a 4 ohm loaded cab!!!) At the price I paid I am happy but would have been very upset if I had paid the full ... MoreI bought this amp as I have occasional gigs that require low volume and minimal gear. Jaw-dropping clean power and sweet tone
13 April 2023

I use this little head with a 1x12 Seismic Audio cabinet in which I installed a Jensen 4-ohm speaker, to get the biggest headroom possible. I run it with a compressor and I am able to use pedals for all my needs, as it loves them all: a Delay, a Chorus, a Digital Reverb, a Cry Baby Wah, and a Wampler Triple-Wreck distortion box. But it sounds fabulous even all on its own. Everyone wants to know what I'm playing through. I am a tube-tone fan and this little head does not let me down. It is as warm and punchy as any tube amp I have. You NEED one of these, or any one from the MV50 series.

MV50 Clean and it is outstanding.

I was amazed at the sound and versatility of this Vox amplifier. I have been playing guitar since 1971 and have had the gambit of amps and cabinets thru the years. I was intriqued by the claims I saw about these little amps in the last Guitar Player magazine so I thought I'd try one out and see for myself. It is really small, I was a little afraid it looked like a toy. But that was a wrong first impression. I wanted to get the Clean version so I could run pedals thru it and I was amazed at how well it all sounds. And don't let the size fool you ...it can get loud.I've run it thru a Peavey 4-10 cabinet and it sounds great, I've run it thru a 2-12 Yamaha cabinet and it sounds better. I even ran it directly thru a Peavey stage monitor with 2-15s and a driver horn. I like that it can feed 4, 8 or 16 ohms. So it is very usable with just about any cabinet you run it thru... I am running 7 pedals in front of it and it sounds great with little noise. in this order, polytune tuner, Morley optical volume pedal, cry baby wah, Ibanez tube screamer, Boss cs-1 compressor/sustainer, Exotic EP booster and last Boss CE-3 chorus pedal.Thought I'd need a noise gate but didn't. huh? great. I got a Line 6 combo, a Fender Mustang III combo and a Peavey XXX head to use but right now I'm playing everything thru this little Vox....pretty amazing technology. And the price...in the magazine review it said it would retail at $279 and was surprised it hit the street at $199. Probably will have to explore getting the AC or Rock version, but really maybe not if I can add a distortion pedal in the chain and it sounds good.

Review of Vox MV50 AC Guitar Amp Head
31 January 2018

I rarely bother giving reviews but seeing this amp didn’t have any on here, I felt I owed it one. Tonal wise the amp at this price is five stars. It possesses real vox character (that’s useable at home volumes unlike an AC30) and covers everything from jangly cleans to a classic rock AC/DC ish tone. It takes pedals well although i would have really liked an fx loop and would have scored the amp 5 stars had it had one. The simple eq is voiced really well, with all set to about 12 on my US strat I get a very nice SRV Lenny esq tone, plug in my Les Paul with really lively pick ups at same setting and I’m getting something I’d compare to the lead guitar in Tin Soldier from the Small Faces. I’m playing through a cheap 16 ohm Marshall 4x12 so am only getting 12.5 Watts. ... MoreI rarely bother giving reviews but seeing this amp didn’t have any on here, I felt I owed it one. I’m playing through a cheap 16 ohm Marshall 4x12 so am only getting 12.5 Watts. Even at this setting at home, I can barely get the volume past half way without it being too much. You’ll need to have a 4 ohm cab to utilise the full 50 Watts which will be more than enough for a full band. This little thing, despite fitting on a pedal board, is loud. Lastly the emulated out for anyone looking to use is pretty darn good, I’ve tried it going through a cheap mixer and speakers and would be more than happy to use as a live rig. Very happy.

Simply gigantic!
14 April 2022

You have to marvel at its size. Its the size of a soft drink tin. If space is a consideration then consider this amplifier. Its quite an attractive unit; its appearance is so nondescript it could be any kind of device. Power it up and its glow transforms it into a mean looking little beast; poised to do a job. Headphone jack makes it the perfect practice amp. Carry it anywhere. A technological break through rivalling the rock man and guitar fx plug ins. Connected to a cabinet however, the beast growls. Three controls deliver clean and crunch you can really work with. At the price, Im not sure you can do better. Good things come in small packages.

I’ve owned a Vox amp so was quite happy to purchase the same make of Cabinet. Not a lot of features, as it’s just a guitar cab. That said, it’s well built and sounds great and surprisingly loud.I’ve bought from dv247 before and their service is excellent. Price is also very competitive.I would recommend this wee Vox box.If I’m picky , there is a white binding around the grill and it doesn’t match up perfectly.. but overall it’s amazing.

This tiny amp is the biggest surprise I've had in a long time.It reminds me of a Fender Dual Showman amp head I had many years ago, sound wise. The clean tube sound is amazing. I've tried it with 2 ten inch stage monitors that have 3x7 horns, hooked up parallel for 4 ohms and now I'm playing through a home built cab with 15" woofer, 6"mid range and horn tweeter (8ohms). This one sounds really great. I have two of these cabs and will hook them up for 4 ohms as soon as I dig the other one out of the closet.I like that they put bass and treble control on the clean amp. The VU meter is cute and reminds me of and old Heath kit amp I had in another life.I have a Fender Mustang GT 200 sitting right next to this Vox and both amps sound great. It's hard to believe that this little Vox amp, that I can hold in the palm of my hand, can belt out so much high quality sound. I'm sure I could break out some windows in my music room with it.I hooked up a multi effects pedal to this amp and it works great. The Zoom G1Xon sounds good playing through the Vox head and it can get VERY loud on some settings. The Vox amp seems to like it fine and does not heat up. The pedal does cause some noise and/or hum on some settings, but I think all overdrives do to some extent.Anyway..... great little amp..... great sound..... easy to haul around. What's not to like. Take the handle off and it will fit in a pocket of your gig bag.Steve K.
