WD produces top of the line HDD, not problem at that. However, for new HDDs, they implemented this PWL which suppose to improve longivity of the products. It sounds nice, and yeah it sounds freaking annoying. It causes HDDs to click every 5 seconds even if they are on idle. It is not just the faint clicking you use to hear when they are working, no, it shurks hard that it moves the case so is my desk. I can just feel the vibration. And it constantly keep doing it for every 5 seconds. I bought 2 4 TB and 1 6TB, all does it. So freaking annoying. There is no way a person can stand that in a quiet room. All of mine made in Thailand, I am not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I checked online and it has been the problem since 3 yrs ago. Fedex charges ridiculous amount for packging. I miss UPS days.

It will be difficult and time-consuming to transfer all of this data to a new drive of this size and set it up again, so I'm stuck with this awful performance for the time being until I can find the time to take on the task. Very frustrated, it may be a long time before I can bring myself to trust WD again.

I’ve only had this drive one week so these are initial impressions and I’ll update if it changes. I own the 2, 3 and 5TB versions of the Black drive. They all run on the noisy side - head seeking. I knew this going in so this is no different than my other two WD Blacks. I’m using a noise dampened case so it’s not a deal breaker for me. I barely hear them. So far this one is benching a bit faster in seq writes than the other two Blacks I own. With disk @ 55% full, Crystal Disk bench numbers: 500MB data size – seq read 155 MB/s seq write 171 MB/s 1GB data size – seq read 158 MB/s seq write 173 MB/s (that’s not a mistake- it’s benching faster in writes than reads) My experience with all 3 Black drives I own is that they operate at a little higher temp than other drives ... MoreI’ve only had this drive one week so these are initial impressions and I’ll update if it changes. Idle is ~ 35C, and continuous extended load has been as high as 40C. My case is well ventilated - three intakes and two exhausts. Mine is an editing rig so the drive is under a lot of extended continuous use for editing and rendering. Overall I’m happy with the drive. My big selling point on these drives is the five year warranty. Performance of these drives is very good. It’s also the sustained and continuous performance of the drive over time that makes it a reliable choice. EDIT: I changed up the fans on my case to provide better cooling on the drive. I put in a slightly more powerful case intake fan blowing across the drive. I also put a an exhaust \ suction fan on the other side of drive cage (facing the inside of the case) to pull air off of the drives - so it's actually a push \ pull arrangement on the drive cage. This reduced temps by about 5 C on extended idle \ desktop and heavy load use. Max temps under load now top out at 35 C. CPU and package temps remain the same, even with the exhausted HDD air blowing into the case, from the drive cage

This is a rock solid HDD drive to add to any gaming rig for all of those files and/or games that aren't the most demanding to run. I've run Western Digital drives well over twenty years, and I've never had a drive fail on me.A friend recommended me grabbing this drive from B&H -- which had an awesome Black Friday discount -- and praised the site & customer service highly. The drive arrived in just a few days, free shipping and the price was incredible! I will be glad to spend my money here again!
When shopping for hard drives, it's one of the few things people heavily overlook as it's easy to miss out on good storage solutions that are cheap, high capacity, and reliable. Like a power supply, you don't want to cheap out on a disk hard drive because a failed hard drive can have severe repercussions that make it hard to impossible to fix and when it is fixable, it's not cheap at all. Hence why I opted for a WD Black 6TB HDD.Coming from a HGST 2TB, I was running out of storage and that one was noisy so I needed something that was bigger and one that wasn't aging. WD and HGST are among the best in terms of pure reliability which for gamers who mostly play single player titles matters the most. WD and HGST are among the best in terms of pure reliability which for gamers who mostly play single player titles matters the most. With titles like Destiny 2 easily getting to an excess of 130+ GB you need massive solutions like this as still SSDs for the average consumer aren't exactly cheap to house multiple games like this and more and more games are getting to that size. And since not everyone has access to cheap high speed internet, simply deleting when you're not playing then just spending an hour downloading simply is not an option for most. So a large reliable storage solution like this WD Black is heavily needed and I highly recommend this coming from WD Black is arguably one of the most reliable consumer drives out there.
I read a lot of reviews about this hard drive being super loud prior to ordering it. I went in thinking it would be a grindy coffee machine, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out it was not at all loud. I run all my system's fans at low duty cycles, some of them actually turn off at idle, and I cannot hear the drive's idle spin over the fans. When accessing data, it does make a bit of a grindy-chattery HDD sound, but nothing obnoxious. People's claims are way overblown in this regard. As said in the cons, unfortunately you lose a lot of space due to partitioning, 460GB to be exact. This isn't the drive or WD's fault, but it does hurt to see. I remember being upset when a 1TB drive only registered as 930GB, a 70GB loss. 460GB is a tremendous amount of space to ... MoreI read a lot of reviews about this hard drive being super loud prior to ordering it. If you need a huge amount of space that performs well enough by today's standards, and won't break the bank, this is absolutely a great drive to own. Recommended.
I purchased this drive in November 2019 for the purpose of installing Windows 10 on my computer. It arrived quickly, and appeared to work very well, and installed easily. On the night of July 31, 2020 I shut down my computer so that a memory leak could be cleared and some updates installed, and there was a funny sound On August 1, I booted up the computer, or at lest tried to, as the select version of Windows screen came up, but then nothing happened after that (black screen, keyboard lit, mouse cursor working, but no other signs. I manually shut the computer off and went into bios and found the hard drive was no longer shown as present. I manually shut the computer off and went into bios and found the hard drive was no longer shown as present. I tried a number of things, using other cable positions, after making sure the cables were firmly seated. no luck, no matter what position (my computer can handle up to 6 hard drives) that position showed no drive. If the drive was in a primary position (as opposed to slave position) not only would there be no drive, but it would trigger a fault in the slave position as well. Finally decided it was dead. Checked with Western Digital. according to the serial number, the drive was produced in 2010 and the warranty expired in 2015, before I purchased the drive.
I needed a fast traditional hard drive. I can't fully trust SSDs for long term storage yet. Not to mention the price differnce is astronomical. I usually get G-Drives but they were out of stock. WD owns both companies and the Black drives seem to get great reviews so I grabbed this one on sale.I mounted it in a HornetTek Jaws external enclosure and it's been fine ever since. The only negative is it seems to take a while to be recognized on my Mac. This is the same thing with my smaller Elements 4TB drive. However, my WD 2TB drives and my 4TB G-Drive are quick to be recognized though so who knows.Little issues like that are why I keep several backup drives handy to minimize potential failures. No problems so far though so hopefully I have a few years of service ... MoreI needed a fast traditional hard drive. I can't fully trust SSDs for long term storage yet. Pro IT person. Bought one online and installed. Bombed. Swapped every other component and cable, as well as tried on working SATA slot. Still failed. Conclusion: Bad drive. It happens.Returned it and got exact same model as replacement. Loud as all get out, and it didn't work. Conclusion: Bad model, try another vendor.
I am in the process of replacing a bunch of HGST drives for my Synology NAS which are starting to show signs of age. I now have 3 of these and about ready to get one more. They are quieter and run cooler than the old HGST drives they are replacing.B&H always superlative service and super good with delivery etc. Of course can't be upset until a drive prematurely fails but so far so good. Will buy more, would highly recommend this drive and B&H
