I was running a very old Seagate 320GB and 500GB HDD's and Window's 7 would take a while to shut down sometimes. It is now instant just like startup. I do use a Kingston HyperX 3K 120GB SSD for my OS and a few top played game's. But I will be moving all of my game's to the WD Black HDD. I can say without a doubt that it is 3-5x faster then my old HDD's from 2003 and 2007. I now run just my Kingston HyperX 3K (OS) and Western Digital Black 1TB HDD in my PC along with a external backup drive (Seagate Backup Plus 2TB USB 3.0 Desktop External Hard Drive STDT2000100) and when I was running my old WD Raptor from 2003 along with a 320GB Seagate Barracuda from 2007 and 500GB Samsung HDD from 2005 in my PC it was just not good Imho only because none of them were Sata 3 6GBPS ... I think I made the right choice. I will update this review if the WD Black happens to die on me as some review's here stated they only lasted a few day's and other's came DOA. I'm Happy it didn't come DOA for sure and since running WD diagnostics, this HDD passed with flying color's. So I doubt I will have any issue's with it. (Knock on Wood) I know I am righting a long review here but I'm exited about this HDD as it surprised me heavily, that it is so fast and not really any audibull noise from it that I can hear over my case fan's. File transfers are very fast, a few seconds for 8GB's of x264 HD video file's from my external USB 3.0 to the WD Black 1TB internal HDD. I guess one of the last thing's would be is this HDD is noticeably lighter compared to my older HDD's of any size. All I need now is the Gigabyte AMD 280X it's on my wishlist and if there are any gamer's out there not living day to day and paying for school with a good amount of money that would like to help me out. I would be thankful forever :D lol, I'm not that lucky though.

Four 3TB Red drives failed within 24 hours, and now this one is basically DOA since it never "worked". WD has fallen a long way, and remember, Red drives are basically just green drives with a higher price and *maybe* tweaked firmware. I selected the WD Black 2 TB HDDrive as a final level of defence against data loss from attackers. This was triggered by the appearance in my inbox of a suspicious eMail. I knew someone had been caught this week by opening an attachment -- it was on a anti-fraud program, so I1: Deleted the eMail unread.2: Ordered the drive from Scan on the Saturday 16th September.3: Took delivery of the drive on Monday 18th September.4: Fitted the Drive into a USB case, backed up my Data and SWITCHED THE DRIVE OFF.I will Backup to this external drive regularly, but always switch it off afterwards.Please note, it took Scan less than 48 hours from order to delivery, and 24 of those were a Sunday.

So after buying one of these for a client, I finally got one for myself. I triple tested it with multiple drive diagnostic suites, including western digital diagnostics. 3 hours of patience there lol and there were absolutely no errors or problems. Passed with flying colors. I am absolutely blown away at the performance increases they have manged to improve upon the previous generation of Black Edition drives. I still own a WD Black 640 GB Sata II 3 Gbps drive and that thing only read up to around 100+ and wrote to also around 100+ But this new one, seems to go well above the 400+ mark in reading of small file sizes and about 150-200+ in writing of small file sizes. Now pretty much installing and loading programs / games have improved significantly. WD has done a darn fine job in optimizing these drives. I would have gone for a VelociRaptor but for the price range, just stick to these, and save your money until the SSD prices tame down a little more. I demoted my old WD 640 GB BLK Ed HDD to my now back up secondary storage drive. Funny thing is I still got around 1.5 - 2 years warranty left on it. and I don't see any signs of it giving out any time soon. On a final note: If you're serious about what you do when it comes to computers, specially data, ALWAYS have backups. Be it flash drives, externals, or optical media. If it is that important, trust me it's well worth the investment. Oh and there's always the "cloud" online storage. Lastly if you go the route of multiple storage drives. Always run thorough diagnostics on them at least once a month, while doing quick diagnostic options more infrequently to make sure nothings amiss. I speak from past experience from my younger days once upon a time... Just my two cents.

Then I moved the drive to one of the hard drive bays above and... problem solved. The drive was indeed causing some sort of resonance with the case or desk, and moving it to the hard drive bay eliminated this. Now all I hear is the pleasant whir of the platter, which is maybe slightly louder than the WD10EZEX was. At any rate, I don't mind the sound too much. I would compare the sound to a 120mm case fan running at 1200 rpm.

It is not outside the realm for me to believe that a manufacturer (any manufacturer) might try to make a few extra bucks by taking one of their lower-end products and pasting a higher-end label on it and using the reputation of their higher end drives to sell their lower-end product. It wouldn't be the first time that a seemingly reputable company would do something like this. Am I "accusing"? No. I'm wondering, and letting others know what I'm wondering. I haven't even installed them yet, and it's possible that these drives will work for years with no issues. Readers can assume that if they do not see another review from me on this question that the drives are performing normally. I didn't take any eggs off for what I'm worried about, but I also want to let others know that they might not get what they think they are buying. Might be a good idea to do some research first on the whole "Is heavier better?" question. Electronically I think it doesn't make any difference, but perhaps heavier is better for platter "flexing" due to heat? IDK. But I'm raising the awareness as a favor to the purchasers, and also to let the manufacturer know we're aware of the possibility that they are pulling a fast one.
I just purchased this to replace the exact same model after I realized it had been in service for 7 years. SEVEN years! and it still runs like a champ! This drive continued to perform flawlessly through power surges and two toasted motherboards. No doubt one of the most reliable drives WD makes. I upgraded to Acronis TI 2020 and cloned the existing drive without a hitch. Keeping it as a backup in case anything goes wrong, but I anticipate many years of service to come.

This is the second hard drive I have purchased. The first one completely shut down two of my computersand they had to be re-configured to work again. I got a refund on that one. The second hard drive came to me from the Return Center in a cardboard box, not the original box, with no instructions, warranty or screws. I immediately took that back for a refund as I did not pay good money for a returned item.
I got the 1TB Western Digital Black drive since it fit my need perfectly. I cloned my old WD Blue as it started to get errors. So far I have been unable to get my PC to see the drive. I used Acronis to do the cloning and it went as expected. However no matter what I do I cannot get my machine to recognize the drive is there. I've never used anything but Western Digital drives almost since my first 386SX and have NEVER had any issues other than age with any of them. This one I cannot get to install no matter what I try or what I tweak. I have to say that the ease of use I once enjoyed has apparently gone. I would NOT recommend this drive for any reason after all this and will be seeking to return it for a refund if possible. No I haven't bothered contacting WD since ... MoreI got the 1TB Western Digital Black drive since it fit my need perfectly. I cloned my old WD Blue as it started to get errors. So far I have been unable to get my PC to see the drive. I used Acronis to do the cloning and it went as expected. However no matter what I do I cannot get my machine to recognize the drive is there. I've never used anything but Western Digital drives almost since my first 386SX and have NEVER had any issues other than age with any of them. This one I cannot get to install no matter what I try or what I tweak. I have to say that the ease of use I once enjoyed has apparently gone. I would NOT recommend this drive for any reason after all this and will be seeking to return it for a refund if possible. No I haven't bothered contacting WD since they don't seem to monitor their support site much if at all. Perhaps I'll get a reaction from them here but I doubt it very much. Don't purchase this drive!
