Constantly SLEEPS! Takes FOREVER to "wake up!"

Good Value. Runs Hot.

I got the 8TB at a great sale price from WD. It took nearly 2 days to transfer all my files from my older WD drives. Access time is good and I know reliability of WD hardware- having used them exclusively. The only real issue with the drive is that it runs hot. No internal fan and CrystalDiskInfo 8 shows it at 118F (room temp 75F). During summer it got up to 145F. For an HD that runs at 5400rpm that seems a bit high...

Good except for the cheap power adaptor

The "Yes" "No" buttons above don't really allow for a proper summary. The drive itself is good quality, I cannot fault it, it works great. However the power adaptor is not good quality. I have 2 of these drives now, my first one came with a power adaptor made in Cambodia which is good quality and no issues. However, the adaptor that came with this one is cheap made in China garbage, comes with a slip-on adaptor that goes over the 2 prongs so it'll fit Australian plugs. It will not stay in the power outlet plug when the outlet is vertical mounted, like on a wall or vertical mounted powerboard. It keeps disconnecting the drive from the computer because of loss of power. The only way to use it so it works correctly is have the plug/powerboard it goes into horizontal. ... MoreThe "Yes" "No" buttons above don't really allow for a proper summary. Probably a cost cutting excercise by WD I guess, as a lot of these companies seem to do, but all they've done is made the total product worse for consumers by swapping to this cheap power adaptor. Would I purchase again? No, not if it comes with the same adaptor I received with this one.

Great Storage - Great Price
16 April 2023

I've owned WD external drives for over 5 years (currently 2 x 3TB) - use them to backup all my files, and especially many 000's of photos, in duplicate. My 3TB drives were beyond 80% full; saw this 8TB drive at a great price. Copied all files from one of the 3TB drives to the 8TB drive and split files across the two 3TB drives. Now all drives are at 50% utilization and perform well.I've had no issues with WD drives over the years and expect the 8TB drive to perform well.btw - delivery was better than the promised date.

Inexpensive 8TB
11 September 2021

Eight TB for under $200 works for me. The drive is fast enough for the psd files or Apple laptop backup (I have a couple of these drives) and, so far - after a number of weeks - it is well-behaved. It's a bit old-fashioned with only one (USB 3.0) means of connection. And once connected it starts itself up when I turn on the computer, though it has an on/off switch. This is a bit annoying as I need to eject it, disconnect before startup, or live with it on my desktop if I don't need to use it. But I suppose there are worse things in life. And this may just be a function of my system, and may not occur with yours.Anyway, it's working well and I think it is worth the money.

It works just fine, Windows 10's latest update is the problem.

I'm giving it 4 stars only b/c the cable it came appears to be USB 2.0 standard, so the transfer speeds are slow. I've since ordered a 3.0 cable. The hard drive has the space I need, and storage is so cheap these days that I'm thinking of getting a second and third one, just because you can never have too much space. It worked out of the box, once connected to my router and the appropriate network settings applied.I initially some issues with Samba shares showing up on my Oppo BDP-103 disc player, but I attribute that to the age of that unit which likely relies on the older, less secure SMB 1.0. I was able to see the HD via my Amazon Fire stick and cell phone with the Xplore app. After a day or so, it started working. I think the PC was just slow to acknowledge the changes I had made and renegotiate my network devices' connections. All was well until I gave in and updated my Windows 10 PC which hosts this drive, taking the 20H2 update, at which point my Oppo stopped seeing the drive, or any other network devices. Again, this is not the fault of the hard drive; I can live with using my cheap Firestick to stream my media to my home theater instead of my $500 disc player. 1st world problems.

Larger Device But No Software is Disappointing
9 November 2022

Drive is large for an upright device. It only has registration software and zero software to backup files or devices, not even an offer to buy some software product. Fortunately, one of my laptops had the WD Smart system and it worked fine. The other had zero options other than the built in M/S System backup. So disappointing. I have liked WD over other brands for reliability. Fortunately, i bought 2 to make a backup of a backup for safety. Disappointing Western Digital .

Malfunctioned although barely used
1 June 2023

Terrible performance, I barely used it 5 times, copied all my stuff on it, and it just died. Called customer service, but since it's been 3 years since I bought it, they won't replace it. Offered me 15% off buying a new one. No way, I've been using multiple Seagate drives for 8 years extensively, and they work just fine. And this device malfunctions after barely any useage

Slower than expected but meets my needs
11 January 2023

The drive is nice for the price and meets my needs but transfer speeds are slow. Info states that using usb 3.0 transfer speeds up to 5GB/s are possible. I am not getting anywhere near those speeds. I have a Dell XPS 15 9500 with 32GB of RAM and two SSDs with a total of 3TB of memory. My 1TB ssd is dedicated to the operating system and the 2TB ssd is for everything else. My thunderport USB-C ports are supposed to be capable of up to 10 GB/s transfer. Since the element didn't come with a usb-c cable I had to buy one. The cable I bought is rated the same as the Elements at 5 gb/s. When transfering files from a sandisk extreme pro sdxc card I am only getting 85 mb/s. WD Elements 8TB USB 3.1 Gen 1 Hard Drive Review
22 March 2023

This is my Ka-billion WD external hard drive primarily used for C: drive image backups. This is the largest I'm ever purchased. I'm needing to back up a lot of video files with video editing greatly increasing the size of the files. The 8TB is needed when backing up of large files and C: images is needed. The drive seems pretty fast in the data transferring. My images are around 75 GB at the moment (with a new PC that is my new video editing platform) and will be expanding past 1 TB soon enough. This drive was on sale and is an economical choice.
