A little worried

These HDDs are highly recommended and I have had great luck with WD drives in the past. They are set up in a raid 1+0 and are used as daily back-ups of work data on a TB3 external enclosure. Throughput is good and they continually pass all diagnostics. The reason for 3 of 5 stars is that at least one of the drives and likely 2 are very noisy. They rattle, clank and gurgle when accessed (not the head crashing type of noise). Because of that I may be replacing them. The shopping exp was good, delivery was fast, packaging was excellent, performance as stated is good.

Fastest HDD I've tested before.

The sequential read and write rates of this HDD are just at 200 Mb/s. Seek times are also very short. The 128 Mb cache buffer only finishes this feeling of "The Bourne Supremacy". What is surprised me a little bit is that with SATA 2 controller performance of this HDD is almost the same as on SATA 3 one. In fact this is quite normal for mechanical HDD with rotary spindle... Please see the results of testing @ SATA 3 controller: IDE mode, Microsoft AHCI driver, Intel(R) Rapid Storage driver. And finally about the quietness of the drive. I'm not quite sure that "quiet" is correct word for it... When I made sequential read with MHDD the moveable magnetic head system produced quite loud pushes accompanied with drive vibration, but I think this is normal for it.

Fingers Crossed.

Got the Gold for the size and speed, but video files are slower to load than I'm used to. I can't figure out if that's a problem with my new computer or the HD.Another problem is the loud grinding noises it sometimes makes. Maybe because of it's size? I ran checkdsk and it said it was ok, but I can't help but worry about it now. Sometimes it's normal HD sounds, but sometimes it's sounds like metal on metal grinding. Also, I wasn't expecting the 14tb to be only 13tb, so now I regret not getting the 16 because I'm running out of room already and my new computer only has one space for a 3.5 hd.I ordered directly from WD and it was shipped quickly.

How to set up the drive for use of the full drive
11 September 2018

Unit works very well.Install the HDD and go to Disk Manager and initialize the entire drive as a, I think it was a UDF drive. Then Basic drive or other drive type and format. I selected longer format to have it check the drive for bad sectors. The quick format does not this.I made the mistake on my first drive like this one to partition it in half at first and then make a Basic Volume and format it.With the 'tools' I available at that time I could never access the other half of the drive. I had to buy a second drive and do the process I mentioned above and copy the first drive (half of the drive) data to the second drive and the delete the partition and perform the first operation described above.

The drive works great. I like the 7200rpm response. The large storage capacity with breaking the bank. The drive take longer than other drives to spin up. It takes twice as long as my Seagate 6TB NAS drive to spin up and access data.

Perfect for 8-drive RAID-50 in PLEX movie server

Perfect for PLEX movie server. Used in 8 @ 4TB drive RAID50 Mediasonic external enclosure. Connected USB-A (3.1 mode); transfer rate always exceeds 100MBytes/sec. This setup previously used similar WD lower-capacity drives that worked continuously and flawlessly for many years.

These two drives are identical models tow two drives already in service as a mirrored pair on a Dell 5810 PWS Intel Raid. The new drive were added to the array and the mirror was migrated to Raid 5 successfully. Performance tests of the Raid 5 were disappointing. Some internet research revealed the risks and rewards of the Windows cache flushing and the Intel write back cache settings. The Intel raid write back cashe setting is dangerous to integrity if enabled while the PC is NOT on a battery backup and arranged for graceful shut down based on batter life left. Ultimately, disabling the windows cache flushing and enabling the Intel write back cashe resulted in great read and write performance. Quiet too!

Very happy with buying experience and with drives.

Great for my purposes. Much less noise than some other comments. Works great in my Synology DS212J... yes it's 9 years old, and still going strong. Why buy through Amazon from questionable sellers, when company-direct for verified-new is same price with much more trust.

What is there to say when it comes to WD HDD
3 December 2022

I like the 5 year warranty as that is important to me. I want more storage space to handle my data and these drives appear to be better than the black caviars and of course offer the larger size and the HE based gas to allow larger sizes. The only problem for desktop computers is they are much noisier than a black caviar drive, but that is the drawback of using a drive meant for a datacenter and not home consumers computers.

I bought this drive for photo storage and editing to work along side my SSD. This drive has the size I need to back up my weekly photos, which are around 200 GB per week. WD is a reliable brand name and one I trust. So far, this drive has not failed to satisfy! I may buy a second one if the need arises.
