Only a couple weeks in so can't speak to it's reliability. It does function as a standard external hard drive. Data transfer does not seem as fast as other hard drives I have. I ordered 2 but only received 1. I had to call and I received a credit vs the second drive I wanted. I will try and assume it was not intentional to see if I would notice 1 missing from the order. My older passport external drives by WD had software to do automatic backups. This drive requires a subscription fee to use the software. So I am having to do the backups manually which is dissapointing.

Worst customer service. My drive arrived with the ‘tamper evident’ tape sliced open and the contents visible. Not acceptable. I attempted to obtain a Return Authorization but the (AI?) chatbot refused, despite my compliance with their request for multiple photos of the box and items. Seriously, what’s the point of using ‘tamper evident’ tape if you’re not listening to customers reporting opened boxes? I’ve been a WD drive buyer for 20+ years, but this experience taught me 1) WD doesn’t care and 2) WD has zero customer service. Will not buy from them again and will tell anyone who will listen not to use them either. Such a waste of my time.

Step 14: Click Transfer. NOTE: If ANY program is recording, the entire folder with that program WILL NOT TRANSFER! For example: I liked "Mom", and am recording the entire season so I can rewatch in order. The entire Mom folder was skipped because Mom was recording at the time. You then need to go back and repeat starting at Step 8, and select only the programs which were skipped. I initially tried every hard drive in our house, and NONE worked because ALL had larger capacity. I DID manage to record a lot of programs to a 500GB Samsung FlashDrive, but resolution was reduced a lot. I am in the middle of downloading, so I am not positive resolution will be the same as on the Hopper, but I think it will be. DISH TV says : NO FLASHDRIVES. A Flashdrive would likely seem to be the perfect solution because they are now storing more and more data, but I tried a 2TB flashdrive, and reformatted it to DISH and it did not work AT ALL. The Samsung 500GB DID work, and that would have been a usable option, except it was too little data for all my programming and had lower resolution. Resolution was satisfactory for me, though lower, but the capacity not big enough. I am trying to move my programs to an external drive because I am switching to the Hopper 3 on Monday. My current Hopper can record or play on 3 different lines at the same time. The Hopper 3 has 16 lines. My old Hopper stores up to 1200GB. The new 2000GB . I bought this just to transfer my programming, but it will be able to live permanently connected to the new Hopper for an extra 2000GB storage. There is a new box that appears when I click DVR, right at the top. it allows choosing either the Hopper HD or the External HD. If that disappears, unplug the External, and reboot the Hopper by unplugging , waiting, replugging.

I have bought dozens of external drives for business. I bought this to use with a. Mac and was told in-store it is compatible. It is not.To run it on a Mac you have to install a program. I did this and learned that it wanted full permissions for system, security, other storage, cloud storage etc.It was so bad that I returned the item - complained to Best Buy and bought a Seagate that already had both file systems installed at Staples. (For less $$.).You do not want an external hard drive that requires the permissions this software was asking for.
I purchased this WD drive to auto backup my IMac computer. As soon as I installed the software I could tranfer (write) single files into the drive. But after it was set up for automatic backups, I couldn’t write single files into the drive. Still a mystery. But it does the automatic backups and I can restore files to the Mac. So the automatic back up can write on the drive, but I can not. To summarize , I bought this drive for auto backups and it works. Still, don’t understand why I can’t tranfer (write) single files using the mouse.

This is the second one I've had to buy in a year and for the same reason. It just stopped working and I lost everything!!!! The first one was worse...nothing could read the drive at all. Spent hundreds of dollars to retrieve my files and nothing worked. This second one can still plug in to a different computer, but I cannot save to it or open files. I can copy the files and paste them somewhere else. We have multiple WD drives at my office and I'm worried sick about when the others will stop working too. I'm not buying WD brand drives anymore.

I bought WD passport 4TB of this model in 2020. I just used two times for pictures storage. Recently I found it was not recognized by computer. Checked with BestBuy, the BestBuy young girl was really nice and tried her best to solve the problem. But finally failed to get it recovered. After several round emails with WD's technical service, they did nothing to get my Passport but tried best to sell their service and product again: pay fee for fixing and 10% discount for me to buy a new WD passport. Oh, my god! So smart WD Digital, sell defect product and earn extra profit again from it!!! I lost all the files in my Passport, really a disaster for my job and my family!!! Never recommend this product!
I'm a little upset with these 3 star reviews of the WD Passport drives. Ok, so I haven't bought one in a couple years. I just bought my newest one, however, I've used them almost since they first came out and even my oldest WD Passport USB drives still work! Others may have had some misfortunes but I, personally, have never had an external WD drive fail on me. I had a new internal WD drive fail about 20 years ago but they immediately shipped me a new one BEFORE I returned the old drive. They sent a shipping label with it and even paid the return shipping charges. I don't know if they still offer such service but that kind of service after the sale is what's sold me on the Western Digital brand.
