I dropped this external hard drive. They could not access (Geek Squad at Best Buy). I had a 3 year warranty-(it's been a while). I was told by the team at the store that I could get a replacement BUT I had to surrender my non functioning hard drive to them to get that credit. What kind of bee ess is that??? I have all kinds of personal info such as documents, social security number, etc...WHY would I give them my non functioning hard drive??? Don't recommend this hard drive. It's crappy. I trusted it and it failed me within a year AND the "best" Best Buy could do, it disappoint me. Not only did I lose all of my documents, family photos, etc...I lost my money on this. Super frustrating! You Best Buy another drive!

I bought this for Time Machine on my wife's iMac. Since it's her business machine, backup is vital. It must be reformatted for the time machine back up, but that's quick and easy enough. Almost automatic, but not quite. I gave her 3TB for Time Machine and 1TB for project storage. The "Mac experts" recommend three times the HD space for time Machine backups. So again, being her business machine that's what I did, just to be sure.So far, it's great. It's silent and small, its powered by USB C, so it just sits out of the way doing its vital job. WD has always been a good brand, and the passport a good product to my experience with them. Recommended.

Their old USB-A style connectors were good, I never had any problems. These new USB-C connector drives have major problems. I work in IT and I have purchased several of them to use at work and have lost 2 due what must be serious design flaws. The failure starts with the drive sometimes not being detected. If you look at the drive, the indicator light will not be on, but you can feel the platter spinning. If you wiggle the USB-C cable then it will most of the time pick it up and it will start working. This is seriously concerning in itself. Well as you can imagine, eventually it just gets worse and worse until eventually no matter how much wiggling you try, or how many cables you swap it out for, it just stops being detected period. From a professional or even personal standpoint you cannot rely upon these drives in their current state.

Had a harrowing experience while using the WD 4TB My Passport Ultra Portable HDD. First, there's a WD Discovery app which I installed thinking it's going to help. To anyone who is buying this, please don't install this app. It asks to share app data which if we deny, doesn't install the app. You may check this in related posts in other subreddits. Such a scam. It only installs if you grant permission to share app data and crash info.Second, even after installing, or so I thought, it made my taskbar disappear (going full black). Waited a while and restarted my system.Third, proceeded to uninstall the program. Again at the end, just made my screen go majorly black and unresponsive. Had to restart my system again.
When I first got it and I ran speed test using Black Magic right away while the drive is still empty, it was about 100MB+/s. After files are filled and I ran test again, it is now about 70MB/s. This USB-C interface is not any faster than the Micro-B USB/USB-A version. But the cool thing is right out of the box, it's already Mac formatted. There is only one cable supplied and it's an end-to-end USB-C cable with one USB-A adapter for one end only. One star less due to speed decreases after the drive is filled up with 3.8TB of data. If you are doing video, avoid this and get SSD external drive instead. For small file size, this works fine. If you work on very large files everyday, SSD external drive is highly recommended.
At first it's just as fast as a normal 2.5 inch drive (~90MB/s). Once it gets pretty full you may get 1 MB/s speeds or less, your whole system/apps may start to lock up. OS cache was filled (2.6GB), it took almost an hour to shutdown because the cache needed to be flushed (containing random writes). You will probably just force shutdown because you don't know and lose data. Even deleting stuff can be painfully slow, hundreds of GBs taking 6 hours. It was deleting less than 1 empty folder per second. Listing a folder with a couple of items can take minutes if it's busy. You have to use discard/trim so that you can speed the drive back up (for newly written data) once clearing space from it. Trim after almost full (5TB) to almost empty took 45 minutes. Will not buy ... MoreAt first it's just as fast as a normal 2.5 inch drive (~90MB/s). SMR drives are scam tier where you get 1% performance hidden away, in return you only save a couple of dollars.
This purchase was a big mistake by me. WD used to provide great hardware and software to help individuals safely and securely back up their home systems. No more. While the hardware may be fine, the Acronis software and installation was a nightmare on my new Windows 11 Dell computer. The software installation failed several times with Windows 11error messages about file security, etc. It was only on my 3rd attempt that the software installed even still with the OS error messages. The Acronis backup setup was VERY confusing and not user friendly at all. After some period of time I was able to actually see and understand what dir. and files were being backed up. But then while testing to make sure changed files were backed up, I found you could not even see the backup files on the drive w/o going thru some technical hoops to be able to read the data. I was so disappointed in WD as I had previously used their drives and backup software with great success. Finally, I was so frustrated with this Acronis software and lack of user friendliness, that I chucked the whole drive in the trash and went out and purchased a Seagate 2tb drive and software that works perfectly and is very user friendly. This experience was a total waste of time and money for me.
Trouble on connecting WD 2TB my Passport Ultra for Mac, I use Macbook 12"Retina early 2016. Last yearend I purchased this drive from department store. And good working with my Macbook 12". Unfortunately Apple updated OS end up with Big Sur, After I updated latest version of Big Sur I found trouble with connecting USB C to My Passport , drive not show up in my Mac ,light on drive turned on, nothing run. So I really upset with the product and brand. And I tried contacting with local Thai WD distributor. They sent me 2 new cables to use. Actually I used drive with WD cables with my other Macbook Pro, It worked well. But it couldn't work with my Macbook 12". I think problem may from MacOS and may from electricity power not enough to run drive. Overall the drive is functional out of the box, easy to connect and get you on your way. The updated USB-C brings it into the current standard. The metal case is an improvement over the previous hard plastic so I am not concerned carrying it in my laptop bag. The transfer performance is sufficient for data transfer and streaming as needed. A longer cable of even a few inches, would be suggestion for the next production run or model upgrades. The warranty is there if you run into any issues, but it should not be needed under normal use. The price is starting to get up there in comparison to other brands so it becomes more a loyalty and picking it up on sale. I have numerous products from WD so for me it was the obvious choice.
Over the years I have had so many WD portable drivers and never had any problem. Last November I decided to get a big capacity driver for my MAC and bought this 5TB drive since it has 3 years warranty. I have been using it for less than a year and has backed up lots of data on it, especially my photos. Yesterday when I plugged in and it suddenly showed up as Boot OS, I chatted with online support and sent him various screenshots, he confirmed the drive has corruption and cannot be fixed, he asked me to file a RMA request to get a replacement. WD will not cover data recovery cost and will only send me a refurbished drive. The online support website did say that I could return the product to where I bought it. I just called WD online store (where I bought the product) and was told I can return but will not get any refund. My only option is a refurbished replacement not a new product. So if I have bought it in third-party store like Bestbuy I could bring it back and get a new product replacement but not when I buy directly with WD. This is really outrageous. I already have to spend so much time to fix my lost data and don't trust to get another refurbished product which could cause issue. This is really not acceptable!
