A smoker that's simple and consistent and CUTE!

As always, Weber has consistently demonstrated that they are able to create a product that merges functionality with simplicity which is why I chose to stick with the trusty WSM series of smokers over other brands of charcoal-based smokers. The unit comes well packed in an ingenious manner to minimize the amount of cardboard and space needed to transport the cooker. Assembly was super easy and was completed with a basic wrench and screwdriver. The fit and finish, like all Weber products, is great and all brackets and holes are lined up perfectly and the provided instructions were easy to follow. Starting up this cooker is EXTREMELY easy b/c of its diminutive size. Simply load up approximately 5-6 lbs of charcoals (not exceeding the height of the coal ring) and place a fire lighting cube in the middle of the coals and light and wait approximately 20 minutes and you're more or less ready to smoke! Don't let the small size of the 14.5" WSM fool you into thinking that it can't cook much! This smoker has dual 14.5" cooking racks and I've EASILY smoked 2 - 7 lb briskets without feeling cramped. Other capabilities include being able to smoke 2 racks of ribs (you have to get a little creative and roll the ribs to fit because you can lie them flat). Alternatively, I can smoke 4 small full-sized chickens or 2 LARGE cornbread or mac and cheese dishes. PLENTY of space to accommodate the cooking needs for families of 4-6 people. As far as cooking ease and consistency, the cooker (permitted it is set up properly) will hold temperatures consistently permitted it isn't cold, rainy, or windy. This is a single-walled cooker so external environmental influences can impact the performance of the cooker. My suggestion is to try to find a sheltered location for this cooker and it will pay you back with fantastically cooked meats that in my opinion, trump the more commonly sold "pellet fed" smokers. Heat control is easy and a load of coals under mild weather conditions will yield enough fuel to burn for 6-8 hours before a fuel top-up might be needed. When you're done cooking, extinguishing the coals is done by simply closing off all the vents and letting the cooker cool for at least 24 hours - charcoal can remarkably hold a lot of heat and can burn for a long time so it is best to make absolutely sure that the coals are out. Cleaning the cooker is super easy, simply soak the small cooking grates in your sink and scrub clean, dump the ash out of the fire bowl and place the included cover over the cooker. No need to scrub the inside of the cooker - the more you use it the better seasoned it becomes. Another benefit of this cooker is that it is so darned cute looking and its tiny size occupies very little space in your yard, deck, shed, or garage. I use this size of cooker the most and anyone that is considering the WSM should stop waffling and just get it!

The first cook was a small learning curve on how to adjust the grates to dial in the temperature, but the Mississippi Pot Roast we turned into Poboy sandwiches was excellent and fell apart with a couple forks. The second cook was a lot easier to get this smoker up to the right temperature and keep it there. The ribeye roast was perfectly cooked. The third cook was spicy pork ribs and again the temperature was easy to lock in and the meat fell off the bones. Last weekend we cooked chicken leg quarters, but it was a lot colder outside - about 50F and windy - and we had some struggles getting the smoker up to the right temperature. Not sure if we didn't have enough coals or what exactly the problem was, but there was also a lot more smoke leaking from around the lid and from the door.Which brings me to the only thing I would change on this smoker - the door. It's the only weak point on this thing, and there are after market replacements available, but I think Weber should change the design of this to make this smoker even better. Thanks for a great product and I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a reasonably priced smoker.

With the minion method and fussing with the vents the smoker works really well and holds temp really well, but if you want a game changer order a BBQ Guru fan system. It is a time and hassle saver and wished I bought mine 5 years earlier! Also get a temp monitor for the grill and meat from maverick or thermopro something like that, make monitoring the food and pit temp easy peasy from indoors. Buy the lid hinge, charcoal grate and thermometers at the very least. You can buy the other stuff later if it starts adding up too much but trust me the money is well spent and I full heartedly recommend those products with hundreds of personal uses for them. This thing makes amazing BBQ and is easy to use. Pressure wash the thing when it gets dirty, works great to clean it easily.

I've owned the 22" smokey mountain smoker for 7 years now. It does smoke well for most meats. Sausages are more difficult to get the temp around 160F and control it.I have the same issues with the lid as other folks. In addition to their complaints, I'm not certain why the lid is designed to fit into the mid-section and not over the mid-section like all the weber grills. If you smoke and it begins to rain the smoker fills up with water. The thermometer lasted one season. I replaced it and it last about a month. I don't use the thermometer anymore. I purchased a Maverick ET-733 REDI CHEK WIRELESS BBQ & MEAT THERMOMETER and insert it into the smoker. I've been using that for about 6 years. Very reliable. My biggest disappointment is with storage. I keep the unit outside year-round and when I use it the next time it's always full of mold and water. It came with a cover, and I use it after every use. Even with the cover it seems to leak like a sieve. After a few years that cover fell apart and I purchased a replacement. It wasn't any better and it just fell apart this year.I've decided to break the unit down in pieces and invert the bottom and water pan and see how that goes. It the only solution I've thought of to eliminate the water and mold other than bringing indoors, which doesn't work for me.

Good...BUT!

I purchased the WSM after trying to perfect my smoking skills on the basic Weber Grill...and I mean basic, I think we purchased it back in 2014? It's a 22" and cost a little over $100. I had to purchase some gaskets for it to help stop the smoke from leaking along the rim, also got a ceramic plate to divert the heat more evenly. These little mods helped to make smoking a brisket/port ribs a little easier to reach ideal. Once I was able to do that and not get any better, I purchased the WSM 22"! It's a good size, but not as huge as an offset smoker...I was going to get the Brazo until I tried to lift one end...not too portable. It's a good size, but not as huge as an offset smoker...I was going to get the Brazo until I tried to lift one end...not too portable. However, with the WSM not having wheels or handles I had to purchase these separately so I could move the WSM around easily on my patio. The handles are a must since you need to remove the mid/top portions to fill your charcoal/wood. Then I needed another heat divert to spread the heat out more evenly. Also had to purchase more gaskets for the connecting pieces mid/lid to stop the smoke from leaking. As well as the front door where you can reach in to add more charcoal. That door is just too flimsy to keep smoke from leaking out, so I had to purchase another stronger rigid SS door, which stopped smoke from leaking out. Now with all these mods on the WSM, I'm able to smoke some good brisket and ribs...in fact I'm smoking some ribs now as I write this review. Now with all that said, this is what I felt I had to do, there are some people...like competitors and such that may not have done what I did to reach the ideal smoked meat. I'm just a backyard smoker and do this about 3 times a month...still in the learning stages. Yet I feel that Weber could/should have done a better job on the WSM to at LEAST add wheels and handles, knowing these would make the smoker much easier to work/play with. I feel they missed the mark on a good smoker, although I don't feel I over paid, just feel not enough thought went into this product.

For smoking I would give it 5 stars, performs as expected. Well made and very pleased overall. Rough start because when removed from an unopened factory packed box, the thermometer and bezel were missing. You can’t smoke without knowing temperature of the smoker. Called Weber and couldn’t understand the rep, was foreign and so very difficult to understand. I replied to the email she sent with my proof of purchase information and instantly received a confirmation email that Weber customer support had it. She told she didn’t have it. I asked how could I have a confirmation email from Weber if she didn’t have it? The whole thing took almost a half an hour and was a huge waste of time for something as simple as a missing part. Was in the market for a smoker I could take camping to the lake. Eager to give the smoker a try, I watched a few YouTube and how to video on the Smokey mountain, and decided to throw on a couple rack of ribs. Took a bit of time to dial in the temperature, but I just followed what I had watched on the YouTube videos and had it at the right temperature very quickly. So I've been going back on forth on what I want for a smoker. I once thought I wanted a pellet grill but after borrowing a friends I was kind of underwhelmed with the results. I then watched a youtube video by a pitmaster that said for beginner the WSM was a great way to product competition style ribs. After unboxing and putting it together I fired it up for my first cook. I wont bore you with tips and such as you can find all of that on youtube but I will say that my first cook included a rack of beef ribs, a pork should and a whole chicken. The chicken came out first and it was easily some of the best smoked chicken I've ever had. The ribs and pork shoulder were better than anything I've attempted to make in the past. This thing really makes you look good. It is so easy to control the temp. I had mine at a steady 250 for 7 hours after I got it dialed in which was ridiculously easy. If you are new to smoking or just want something that is easy to use and puts out great bbq, this is the thing.

First time charcoal and smoker! Love the WSM! I did a lot of research and as popular as offsets have gotten. I must be realistic with the amount of time i have to devote to the cook with a family, job, etc. Charcoal provides an amazing taste and the WSM make it very close to set and forget.I am still learning but i have successfully cooked a pork shoulder for 6 hours without checking on it (other then grate temp). I do have a thermometer at grill level and i maintained 250 with 3/4 a bag if BnB charcoal briquettes in minion method and water pan used. Also tried ribs, steaks, smoked burgers, and hot dogs. All fantastic! The "hardest" thing to cook so far was a 14lb turkey but the flavor was amazing! Smoked turkey salad leftovers was amazing!I love all the Mods ... MoreFirst time charcoal and smoker! Many are not needed but fun to make it unique to you. In my case, wheels, new front charcoal door, and a hinge for the lid. None of them are needed but useful.

Why did I wait so long to get a smoker?!?!?

The WSM makes smoking food so easy and labor-free! After hearing many of my friends complain about tending to their smokers to get just the right temp, smoke and time, I was reluctant to dive into smoking as a grilling alternative. Found a WSM at an incredible price and decided to give it a try based on reviews and, well, the price. The initial "trial run" with the Smokey Mountain was thick cut pork chops that were tender and juicy. My error was too much hickory chips! Next smoker run was baby back ribs. The wife is very particular about ribs and she said they were better than any restaurant ribs that she's had! The smoker held at 225 degrees throughout the 6 hours with no temp fluctuation.Depending on what your smoking or the style (I used the 3-2-1 method for ... MoreThe WSM makes smoking food so easy and labor-free! Paired with a blue-tooth thermometer, there is so little to do other than get it going (extremely easy with the Weber Rapidfire charcoal chimney), throw the meat on the grill and watch the temp and time and then eat some incredibly tasting food.If I had known how easy it was to use and how good the food would be, I would have paid the full price without any reservation. Looking forward to all the great dinners we'll have in the future!
