I purchased this grill November 21st of 2021 and it is the Generation 2 that was to have fixed some prior issues. I will say that for quick heat for searing or using it to do a one hour smoke on a steak before reverse searing it is great. The major issue I have had and my friend who I bought him the same grill as well, is that any time you do lets say, a brisket, bone in beef ribs, or just altogether a meal that has at least a 3 hour smoke the grill will shut down randomly and you will need to wait for the entire shutdown process!!! This is losing valuable time with the heat loss to your meat!!!!!! This isnt just some times it is EVERY TIME!!!I clean the grill and fire box after every use which is tedious yet that is what the instructions state. The new upgraded ... I purchased a Gen 2 just over a year ago. The first unit failed in less than a month (would not turn on at all). I went through the exhaustive troubleshooting process with the Weber customer service rep and, to their credit, Weber provided a new unit, along with the advice that this is a "fragile/finnicky" unit.I took exceptional care of the replacement grill (kept it inside when not in use, cleaned frequently etc). Went to turn it on on November 17 to make sure everything was in order for Thanksgiving and NOTHING happened.I called customer service on three occasions and was told a SmokeFire expert would promptly return my call. Weber has always been my go to for grills through the years. I did a ton of research in making sure I was making the right decision and sticking with weber when purchasing a smoker/grill. This thing works flawlessly. I have now owned it for two months and made about a dozen meals and everyone gets better. It is amazing that a pellet grill can keep such a consistent temperature and the Wi-Fi temperature probes are excellent. The only issue I had was that they put a guard in the hopper feed and I'm guessing its for safety for the auger feed from the hopper box. I use a lot of different pellets in it and that might have been the issue but since I removed the screen and had no feeding issues whatsoever. Minor issue considering all the things going on with this unit. ... MoreWeber has always been my go to for grills through the years. I'll start with the fact that I've been smoking/grilling for going on 40 years and I've used kettles, vertical, offset stick burners, gas burners with smoke boxes and about anything else you can think of with great results on all of them, given the time and effort to learn your particular cooker. This Weber, and I've had at least 10 different Weber products over the years, is impressive, to say the least. I've only had it for about a month, and with the 100 day moneyback warranty, I wanted to put it through its paces quickly to see if it was a keeper, and it is. I've done burgers, brisket, steaks, beef ribs, pork ribs, shoulder, tenderloin, chicken, turkey, fish, shrimp, stuffed peppers and pizza on a stone, and everything turned out as good, and in some cases, ... I've only had it for about a month, and with the 100 day moneyback warranty, I wanted to put it through its paces quickly to see if it was a keeper, and it is. I've done burgers, brisket, steaks, beef ribs, pork ribs, shoulder, tenderloin, chicken, turkey, fish, shrimp, stuffed peppers and pizza on a stone, and everything turned out as good, and in some cases, better than my best, and that's saying a lot. The brisket in particular was hands down, the best I've ever produced on a 14 hr. cook. It smokes, grills and sears with amazing results and a heck of a lot less hassle than baby sitting a fire on a stick burner. Another huge advantage that I've experienced over other products that are owned by friends is the time it takes to be ready to smoke, about 10 minutes for low and slow cooks, which is so much better than what others have shared. It's also quicker to bring it up to searing range. Cleanup and clean out was simple so zero issues there. My experience with Weber over the decades has been exceptional so for me, that absolutely checked the box for a solid company and great customer service. Warranty is solid, they provide 2 additional igniters, knowing that they won't last forever, which is another + for the Weber. The controller, app and probes are working great and the app was simple to install and use. I actually got to sleep during my brisket/shoulder cook, which has never happened in the past. The extra smoke feature on low temp smoking worked amazing as well and absolutely no hint of dirty bitter smoke on the long smokes. There are some minor things that I was not pleased with, 1. Paint on the lid had some runs in a 5"x5" area (no big deal) 2. The flavor bars need to be stabilized and this should be addressed in design/modification, on the next gen. When wheeling the unit from concrete to asphalt, or generally moving it around (it has wheels, so it's meant to be able to do that) the bars will drop off of their support ledges unless you go ridiculously slow, and even then, a bar can drop. This should be a simple fix with small tabs that keep this from happening, but not a deal breaker for me.If anyone is hung up on some of the BS (in my opinion) on the first gen, realize that most of that, was user error and not understanding the trade offs associated with having bars and not some continuous tray between the burner pot and the grill grates. Use your head when doing long smokes and provide some water trays (can be a huge benefit on long low smokes) or trays for catching large amounts of fats that will render out. Don't cover the entire area, as you will defeat a couple of the major reasons to purchase this unit over other pellet smokers. 1. Rendered fat from what your smoking that burns up on the bars, more readily than it can on a tray due to the temp differences on the bars and some exposure to open flames is a great thing when it comes to flavor profile. 2. It has a lot to do with being able to get the unit up to good searing temps and doing pizza. ( Stone heated up to about 650 produced a fine pizza on fresh dough in about 6.5 minutes ) Don't expect to have exactly the same temps across the entire cooking area, you won't, just like you won't have them from the main rack to the top rack. This is not a convection oven, it's a smoker that can also grill and bake and as with any other smoker, you will need to take the time to understand how things operate and where the hotter spots are.In conclusion, I'm a happy owner of the EX6, and all of the things that I've stated about results, have been verified by friends and family that have eaten my products for decades and bring me cuts to do for them when they know I'm doing a smoke. IMHO, Weber has hit this one out of the park when considering performance, versatility as well as the tool needed to produce amazing BBQ. I hope this helps, and I'm a reluctant convert to a pellet smoker and have fought it for years. This is the real deal and if you can't produce great results on this, you should sell it and never try to smoke anything again.
I own a Genesis(6 years+). The Smokefire is now my favorite grill. So far I've cooked wings, ribs and pork shoulders. It does a great job as a pellet smoker, foods come off smokey-but not too smokey.I've grilled steaks and chicken at high temps and the grill performed quite well. As good as my Genesis! The flame does a nice job at putting sear marks on the food-something my other brand pellet smoker could not do.As far as maintenance goes-I spend about 15 minutes after a long cook cleaning out the barrel as it does collect some ash and grease. I also own a major competitor's brand pellet smoker and it requires clean up too, so this isn't anything unique to the Weber. The pellet hopper isn't difficult to use as others may have mentioned, it's just in a different ... Low and slow cooks can take all day, and might use a bag of pellets. So having to load the pellets from the back once isn't going to make you break out into a sweat. It's not like you have to refill it every 20 minutes......The Wifi and Bluetooth work great, easy to setup. I guess there's been some performance upgrades in the firmware-be sure to update as before your first cook. The app is pretty good-It would be nice if it had a "keep warm" function though. This grill is so much fun to cook with that I'm getting Gourmet BBQ rack system with the sear grates and the wok.
I bought this 3 years ago. I've swapped out the auger, cute, hopper and electronics boards. I've had technician out here twice. I've been told I 'essentially' have a gen 2. It'll run for a while and then break, often. Don't you dare count on it for a special day or holiday. Lots of wasted food having it fail to start on day of. Don't you dare sear after Aa few smokes unless you're going to meticulously clean it otherwise you're have a great fire. Right side always cooks much faster than left. I have loved my Weber gas grill so anticipated this getting more the same, even bought hundreds in accessories for it. It's been the one of the biggest consumer purchases of my life. Checking it periodically, at about the four hour Point noticed that the grill was cold, had error code three Grill flame out. The chamber was quite cool by the time I found it. The grill has a ridiculously long shut down cycle. I took the grill all apart and checked the fire chamber which had unburnt pellets in it and no buildup of any sort, I fired the Grill back up and set it to 250°. I did not have another malfunction after the first but I have lost confidence in the Grill right out of the gate. I have been using a less expensive pellet smoker purchased at Walmart for three years and never had an issue and then the very first Cook on my new Weber and it almost ruined an $80 brisket which by the way took 19 hours to cook after that unexpected cool down. The food turned out OK in the end, but I did have to cancel Going out on a boat today because I was still home watching the brisket cook when it should have been done hours sooner. I really wanted to love this grill, I bought it in spite of seeing several negative reviews and it seemed as though Webber was willing to back it with a really good warranty and 100 day satisfaction guarantee, I have several other cooks planned for this grill as we have company in town this week. I am on the fence at this point. As it sits right now I would not recommend this Smoker if somebody asked, and I am having a bit of buyers remorse
In two weeks, I will have had my Ex6 for one year and could not be more satisfied. After two shutdowns shortly after purchasing, I was determined to find a cure or get a refund. I soon found that keeping this pit clean, regularly, is a fix for many of this pit woes. It's a machine and they all malfunction or break down sooner or later, and what works for one doesn't always work for all. I like to figure things out and this pit was no different, especially after waiting for Weber to come out with a pellet of this size and revamping. Woods produce "creosol", and a by product of creosol is a sticky residue. It affects every part of this grill, especially the pellet chute. Early on I learned from my flameouts that performing regular cleaning has eliminated any flameouts until the other day when I did a 16 hour brisket and got a flameout at hour 13. But you know what, I hadn't did my regular 3 cook cleaning and could only blame myself. I do a minor cleaning every 3 cooks and a major every 6-7. I focus on the chute with a thin spray of cooking oil, preferably Pam, wiping off any excess to prevent a fire but just enough to keep that chute nice and slippery. I noticed early on that when I did have a flameout, there was a pile out pellets all over the igniter box. Curious as to why, I did nothing but remove the excess pellets and refired the pit. The pellets started boiling up on the chute from friction buildup, and after enough weigh over came the friction, they all dropped together covering the igniter box completely and causing a shut down. The exact thing occurred on that brisket cook the other night. So do I blame Weber for something they couldn't prevent if they tried, NO. After a deep clean, it fired right back up and performed flawlessly next cook. I use a mopped on base during all my cooks, so my accumulation of dried up sauce build up is probably a lot more than the spray bottle cooks. The plastic scrapper that came with the pit is an excellent utensil for the job. Keeping the vents open and clear adjacent to the burn box is critical to constant temps, so be mindful, especially if you're a mopper like me. I purchased the cover with the pit to prevent direct rain on the electronics if it's something you haven't considered. Water and electronics, not a good mix. Blame Weber, I just don't think so. if you can afford this pit, you can afford the cover or at the least, a piece of plastic. I am still learning my pit and the different flavors of pellets of different foods, searing and reverse searing, precise hot spots, you name it. I think it's just part of the cooking experience, and yes, there are recipes you should be able to duplicate without even thinking about it, but as I said, these are machines that need maintenance and upkeep. For me, cleaning has been my best friend for consistent, uninterrupted cooks thus far. I'm 67 years old and have had Webers from my first pit purchase nearly 50 years ago, and haven't been disappointed yet, especially with their patented baked on finishes, enabling years of service of all their pits. I ain't rich, and for me and a pit, this was a luxury purchase I budgeted and waited on Weber to fix their glitches from their initial pellet introduction. I am totally content, the size, the performance, the exterior and it's looks, everything I wanted for such an investment and expectation from Weber. Hopefully, I may have mentioned something that will make your cooking more enjoyable and less frustrating and always remember, Weber has one of the best warranties in the business if all other fails and their customer service is outstanding. Good cooking fellow Q'ers!
My first pellet grill. I chose this one because its made here in the USA! I was looking at lots of other brands. Several of my coworkers own differing brands and we had lots of great conversations about the merits of each one. No one else had a smokefire. I was hoping to smoke briskets and pork low and slow and also be able to replace my gas grill. I am very pleased with the smokefire. I've cooked steaks, chicken wings, brisket, pork butt, chicken breast and legs. Everthing has been great. My first brisket didnt have enough pepper but i fixed that on the second one. It gets hot in 10 minutes. My only complaint is that on a cold Pennsylvanian winter day and a hot cook it really goes through the pellets. I guess I have two complaints. I spill the pellets trying to ... MoreMy first pellet grill. I chose this one because its made here in the USA! I was looking at lots of other brands. It gets hot in 10 minutes. My only complaint is that on a cold Pennsylvanian winter day and a hot cook it really goes through the pellets. I guess I have two complaints. I spill the pellets trying to fill the hopper all the way up before i go to bed at night on a long and slow cook. I'll have to get a scoop or something instead of just pouring out of the bag. I did add the folding front shelf. All in all I would definitely buy this again. I've been cleaning every couple of cooks. It only takes a few minutes to pull the grates and internals and scrape everything to the ash/grease pan. Ive been using the additional drip pan under briskets and pork on the low and slow with some water in it. Ive had great results.
After 2 months of use here are my thoughts. Three things to keep in mind when buying the SmokeFire EX6 2nd Gen. One it blows ash everywhere. In fairness it’s not a ton but you will see it on the outside of your grill. I’ve owned other pellet grills and never saw ash on the outside like this. Two everything you’ve read on the internet about the grease management system is true. Grease will drip down into the ash and clump up never making it to the drip pan below. I will say using aluminum pans resolves the issue just fine. Other grills use aluminum inserts to make clean up easy it’s pretty much the same here but the flavor bars are rendered useless. Third and most concerning is the hopper. I smoked a brisket over night and at about the 8 hr mark the pellets bridged ... MoreAfter 2 months of use here are my thoughts. Other grills use aluminum inserts to make clean up easy it’s pretty much the same here but the flavor bars are rendered useless. Third and most concerning is the hopper. I smoked a brisket over night and at about the 8 hr mark the pellets bridged and stopped being feed into the auger. Thankfully I had a secondary ambient temp monitor which woke me up with an alarm when the temp dropped to 165. I was able to quickly get to the grill and push the pellets into the auger and keep it going. My advice never go more than 6 hours without checking on the hopper. In addition the poor placement of the pellet sensor makes it useless. It should be placed directly over the auger. That being said the grill is beautiful, built in America, holds temp great, grilling space is amazing and I’ve turned out some very delicious food off this grill. Having two temp probes included is great! Also having the availability of using four ports total for temp monitoring is outstanding. The grill communicates with the app well and clean up is easy as long as you use an aluminum pan for grease drippings. Simply vacuum out all the ash, wipe down the outside of the grill and cover it. I wanted so badly to give this grill a 5 star rating because I love the Weber brand but 3 stars is very fair. I’m sure Weber has something in the works for a new pellet grill that resolves all these issues and more. Maybe the can provide a credit to the customers that own SmokeFire grills in order to buy the new one. I think that would help to create brand loyalty and ensure customers retention.
