Better than the WD RE4 or Caviar Black!

This HDD is highly recommended for 'prosumers', a term for consumers who wants professional features in a drive (or other product). The WD Gold, a true professional series model, can be used to replace a HDD in a single drive computer, response will be much better than drives installed by the OEM, or one who builds their own & wants to upgrade (or use these from the beginning). Can be also used as a Data drive along with a SSD (SATA or NVMe). Keep the OS on SSD, data on the WD Gold. Using these for backup would be a total waste of the WD Gold, better to use drives laying around, or the one(s) this model will replace. Have ran these for close to a month, if there were going to be issues, I'd know by now. While I could write a book about the many positives about this drive, purchased two (one each for two PC's), I'll spare the details & just say these are indeed an noticeable improvement over the several WD RE4's I have (all purchased new), as well as a Caviar Black. Note that all of these drives has the same warranty, yet the performance & overall value of the WD Gold is better than any other HDD's that I own, and have quite a collection. Get these while you can, the purchase won't be regretted, and last but not least, Western Digital will take care of you should an issue arise in a short timeframe. Enjoy the WD Gold, just as I am!

I replaced two, 6TB UltraStar drives with two, 18TB Gold Enterprise drives in my RAID chassis, which I use as a Time Machine backup for my Mac computer. I've had the drives for a couple of weeks now and everything has gone swimmingly. The only complaint I have is the noise level of the drives. Since the Gold Enterprise drive specifications are similar to that of the UltraStar drive, I expected the same level of noise. What I found, however, is the Gold Enterprise drives are noisier. You can definitely hear the read/write heads shuttling around in the drive. There is definitely room to improve the drive design in this regard. Aside from the noise, I am satisfied with the drive performance and am hoping I get the same level of reliability with the Gold Enterprise ... MoreI replaced two, 6TB UltraStar drives with two, 18TB Gold Enterprise drives in my RAID chassis, which I use as a Time Machine backup for my Mac computer. Great Drives, But WD RMA is disappointing

I have installed and used many of these drives. Not 1 has been DOA and several have been going over a decade (Including Black HDD). Only problem is that both times I got a warranty replacement (failing smart-but still working) they replaced them with lesser drives. Granted they were close to the end of warranty, but a blue drive is NOT a replacement for an enterprise drive. I haven't had problems with the RMA process and turn around was fast, just not equal replacements.

I tried every which way to have LINUX find GRUB to boot the OS. Absolutely no such luck or is the drive incompatible with LINUX. The drive itself is working fine as a slave, but as soon as you expect it to run as master for LINUX, it does not provide boot information that is needed to start the OS. I tried LINUX MINT (based on UBUNTU) I tried DEBIAN LINUX the original. I installed LINUX MINT several times without as reported failure, including the GRUB install. On reboot, nothing! The boot sector or whatever data might have been written to it, runs right into the digital darkness of HDD space. Why trying to read or write outside the drive e.g. air bubble or? I wound up to take a 500GB from another computer that was running as slave. Installed the LINUX MINT without a single problem. The 1TB GOLD wound up as a slave in previous mentioned computer as storage. It seems more and more to me, that some OS manufacturer pay hardware manufacturer to make it very difficult to get their hardware working with LINUX. Sad, sad, almost like the white house.

Noisy but excellent!
15 May 2022

I would definitely recommend these drives, but they DO make some pretty loud noises occasionally. Almost like a head crash but seems that's just normal operating/initialization noise. Once they get going they're not all that bad and not much noisier than other drives. They just weren't made for silent operation. I had them in a drive carrier that stacks them in 4's while waiting for them to validate outside of a case, and started getting temperature warnings (60 degrees), but put a nearby fan on them just to get some air circulation and that solved the problem. Make sure to have circulation. Otherwise, they've gotten built into a home array with parity, and are currently loading up with data. Highly recommended.

On sale, a smoking deal. Even otherwise it's good!

I bought two of these when they were on sale for $250 off. I use them in a RAID0 array for a home server I have setup. The drives contain the large, infrequently accessed files the server serves. The drives perform well against all benchmarks I have thrown at it. I have had no data failures in the time I have owned it.I will however issue potential buyers this warning. WARNING: Not made of gold. Even though the drive claims to be gold, it is in fact made with the same non-gold materials just like any other drive. No stars taken away for this... yet!And one last bit of miscommunication about the drive, likely due to my ignorance about drive terminology, and upon which I hold no umbrage: The drive is advertised as 16TB, which of course I and likely any other buyer would assume is a reference to Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburg Steelers scoring 16 points in their 1974 Superbowl win. It, however, refers to the drive having a capacity of 16 "terabytes."

Product delivered on time and performance as expected
31 December 2020

These two drives are identical models tow two drives already in service as a mirrored pair on a Dell 5810 PWS Intel Raid. The new drive were added to the array and the mirror was migrated to Raid 5 successfully. Performance tests of the Raid 5 were disappointing. Some internet research revealed the risks and rewards of the Windows cache flushing and the Intel write back cache settings. The Intel raid write back cashe setting is dangerous to integrity if enabled while the PC is NOT on a battery backup and arranged for graceful shut down based on batter life left. Ultimately, disabling the windows cache flushing and enabling the Intel write back cashe resulted in great read and write performance. Quiet too!

Replacing two RAID drives
1 November 2023

The two WD drives replaced two drives in a G-Technologies RAID which was nearly out of space. The replacement was as easy as changing two light bulbs and the unit was easily formatted to the Apple standard. The drives are very quiet and as a part of a thunderbolt system, very quick. Over the years I’ve had a number of WD drives and have always been pleased with the service they have given.

Rock solid beast

Excellent product. Extremely solid. I ordered the 16TB and upon formatting to NTFS it was down to 14TB. Which is a loss of 2TB. Though this happens to nearly all hard drives (external or internal) due to formatting and system files required to run the beast. I haven't had it too long (maybe 2-3 months). Using it and had no problems. Very quick and its not even noisy. I do hear few clicks upon booting it up. But that's all. And I use it as a workstation close by (not stored away in the closet somewhere) and its very tolerable. Meaning it doesn't disturb me noise wise.Hoping this is rock solid drives from Western Digital (shoutout to all you hard workers here that make these) that if goes long and strong (I'm betting) I'm only using Western Digital upon my next ... MoreExcellent product. Anyone thinking of buying, don't hesitate. Look up your needed specs and you're fully covered by WD. Thanks again!Quick note: I was always curious as to why the stock photo looked so nice with the big covered gold sticker on the HDD. However, it does not look like the stock photos upon opening the package. It has a smaller gold sticker (unlike the stock photo). I'm guessing for lesser heat dissipation. But still looks good.:)

WD181KRYZ - Firmware update??
18 May 2023

Hello, can I somewhere download and install a new FirmWare for the WD Gold WD 18TB, WD181KRYZ ?? I bought it, but my NAS (Qnap TS-1232XU-RP-4G) is probably incompatible with them. It is unfortunatelly freezing with this drive 18TB connected..Or what do you recommend to me? What is doing the Jumper on the disk? Is it usable for me, for some eg. some capacity/speed limitation?? Thank you.
