Best Mechanical Hard Drive!

I'm PC enthusiast and an avid gamer. One of the reasons that led me to this drive is that my OCZ Vertex 4 512GB SSD is not enough to hold all of my games--especially my Steam games. I needed something better and reliable. For my set up, I have the main Steam app and games installed on this WD RE 4TB drive. I use SteamMover app (Google it) to move the games I play the most on the OCZ Vertex 4 SSD. If I don't play it much anymore, I can just move it back to the WD RE drive and transfer another one in. Works great for me. This app retains all file associations and locations even after moving the games using SteamMover. Best SATA-2 HDD on the Market (if you get a good one)

With a massive 64MB cache, the WD RE4 is a fantastic performer. I have three of these, one which has seen action in 6 different PC's. Still going strong today, there's a reason why these shipped with a 5 year warranty. In reality, these WD RE4's are upscale (or upgraded) Caviar Blacks, has 2x the cache, and runs quieter also. This is because the RE4 isn't a consumer oriented HDD, there's businesses with multiple of these drives installed, so has to be quiet & fast. Disabling parking can in reality, double a drive's lifespan, regardless of number of hours used. That's the trick used by many, and in some cases, one can get a HDD with over 50,000 hours of use, and less than 200 start/stop cycles. Consumer can benefit from the same trick, though will have more start/stop cycles by default when computer is shutdown or rebooted. The WD RE4 is a true workhorse of a HDD, it's as simple as that. Even post retirement, makes excellent backup drives using a docking station or enclosure constructed of metal, the heavier, the better & avoid plastic models, though it's OK for the end caps to be. A fan is a plus, though if not ran 24/7, not a necessity. Check the seller's feedback before purchase, chances are that the best sellers will give a great deal on these drives, some of which are still covered by WD's warranty. Good storage drives not recommended for when you need high speed reads.

Not sure how to review a hard drive I just received in regards to how reliable it will be but we will give it a shot. Had an older mechanical drive showing SMART errors meaning the drive was dying. Ordered this as a replacement for two drives and went with WD black because they are generally not super fast drives but very durable and reliable. As most hard drives last about three years or more it will be some time before I can speak of the longevity of the unit. It makes little chatter noises when in use which are barely audible but can definitely hear in a very quiet room. Seems as speedy as the old Seagate drives were but as expected nowhere near as fast as my SSD drives.

It's a WD RE4. The product isn't the problem.

I have 3 of them installed as permanent fixtures in my own desktop PC, which serves multi-duty as my gaming beast, my development environment for Windows programming, my virtualization host for ALL operating systems, occasionally as an IIS host for demonstrating products to clients during webdevelopment, and my general workhorse for all other purposes. I have 16 drives in a Norco 4220 4x 3TB Baraccuda XT (Triggers heat warnings at 115F, avg temp under full load is 109) 4x 3TB WD Red (Never had a heat warning, avg temp under full load is about 95) 4x 4TB Datacenter (these drives) (Triggers heat warnings at 105F, got to 115 and my system shut itself down) 4x 10TB Ironwolf (Never had a heat warning, under full load it gets to about 102) I took some drives out so I had on Column of one of each drive on the far left, next Column completely empty, then I had a Datacenter in Row 1, and Ironwolf in Row 3, then the last Column was empty. I would expect a lot more from a "Datacenter" / "Enterprise" drive that would be stacked and on 24/7. I should have gotten more of those Ironwolfs instead of wasting my money.

I been running dozens of servers for myself and my clients for decades and using the Western Digital RE series of enterprise drives since the RE3 line came out. I've continued throughout the RE4 drives and now the RE (no number) which are the latest and appear to be even better than than the predecessors. These RE series drives have been very reliable with no failures in years. When I want reliable and economical server storage the RE drives are the center of my comfort zone. To improve performance even more I have started using smallish SSD drives for some server applications; using a SSD RAID1 for the OS and RE drives in RAID1 for the bulk data storage. This can really boost server performance while balancing costs. If you put these into a desktop PC don't expect them to be super quiet! They are not very quiet drives which is fine in most server applications. Overall Western Digital has demonstrated continued improvement in their enterprise RE drives. When I want drives I can depend on for solid performance in a 24X7 environment RE is my go to drive. Hope this helps someone!
