I'm including this information to inform consumers to check specs & be aware of features that can extend drive life. Disabling parking can in reality, double a drive's lifespan, regardless of number of hours used. That's the trick used by many, and in some cases, one can get a HDD with over 50,000 hours of use, and less than 200 start/stop cycles. Consumer can benefit from the same trick, though will have more start/stop cycles by default when computer is shutdown or rebooted. The WD RE4 is a true workhorse of a HDD, it's as simple as that. Even post retirement, makes excellent backup drives using a docking station or enclosure constructed of metal, the heavier, the better & avoid plastic models, though it's OK for the end caps to be. A fan is a plus, though if not ran 24/7, not a necessity. Check the seller's feedback before purchase, chances are that the best sellers will give a great deal on these drives, some of which are still covered by WD's warranty. As long as the drive is good, everyone's a winner!;-) Cat

Good storage drives not recommended for when you need high speed reads.

Not sure how to review a hard drive I just received in regards to how reliable it will be but we will give it a shot. Had an older mechanical drive showing SMART errors meaning the drive was dying. Ordered this as a replacement for two drives and went with WD black because they are generally not super fast drives but very durable and reliable. As most hard drives last about three years or more it will be some time before I can speak of the longevity of the unit. It makes little chatter noises when in use which are barely audible but can definitely hear in a very quiet room. Seems as speedy as the old Seagate drives were but as expected nowhere near as fast as my SSD drives.

I would absolutely and positively recommend the Western Digital RE4 hard drive to anyone and everyone who needs reliable data storage. I have 3 of them installed as permanent fixtures in my own desktop PC, which serves multi-duty as my gaming beast, my development environment for Windows programming, my virtualization host for ALL operating systems, occasionally as an IIS host for demonstrating products to clients during webdevelopment, and my general workhorse for all other purposes. I've had them over 5 years and they're actually doing better than my mainboard is. So far as I can tell, "Tech Experts" decided not to provide my most recent RE4 order in anything resembling a timely fashion because I failed to leave them any feedback at all the last time Newegg ... MoreI would absolutely and positively recommend the Western Digital RE4 hard drive to anyone and everyone who needs reliable data storage. I frankly wouldn't be wasting my time writing this review if they hadn't decided to spam me with a request for a 5-egg review. The plain truth is that the Western Digital RE4 hard drive is the best drive I know of for both performance and longevity, but "Tech Experts" has no business in the Newegg.com marketplace when that's their barometer for service.

The WD RE series SATA III drives are outstanding enterprise drives. Designed for long life in server use with a 24X7 duty cycle they are ideal for that environment. Their 5 year warranty speaks to their reliability. With Time Limited Error Recovery (TLER) the RE series drives are well suited RAID based applications which are not suitable for desktop drives which can give false failures with their extended error recovery timings. The RE drives are economically priced with a relatively low cost per gigabyte and a wide range of capacities from 250GB up to 4TB. The RE drives are economically priced with a relatively low cost per gigabyte and a wide range of capacities from 250GB up to 4TB. I recently installed a pair of RE drives in a client server in a RAID1 configuration. As I've come to expect they worked perfectly and with some initial testing are slightly faster than the RE4 drives that were already in this server. I been running dozens of servers for myself and my clients for decades and using the Western Digital RE series of enterprise drives since the RE3 line came out. I've continued throughout the RE4 drives and now the RE (no number) which are the latest and appear to be even better than than the predecessors. These RE series drives have been very reliable with no failures in years. When I want reliable and economical server storage the RE drives are the center of my comfort zone. To improve performance even more I have started using smallish SSD drives for some server applications; using a SSD RAID1 for the OS and RE drives in RAID1 for the bulk data storage. This can really boost server performance while balancing costs. If you put these into a desktop PC don't expect them to be super quiet! They are not very quiet drives which is fine in most server applications. Overall Western Digital has demonstrated continued improvement in their enterprise RE drives. When I want drives I can depend on for solid performance in a 24X7 environment RE is my go to drive. Hope this helps someone!

Very clean and good condition. Solid deal for a 1tb drive for non-crucial storage; Movies, games, etc. Just don't use it as a boot drive for your OS if you care about system speed. HDDs still have a place in today's world!

Handled the work flow on my workstation with ease and I'm seriously considering purchasing one to replace the 1TB Blue I currently employ. This is truly a great drive for your enterprise / workstation / server needs. Impressed.

Western Digital RE4 WD1003FBYX 1TB 7200RPM 64MB Cache

Best Sata II hard drive available besides the Western Digital Blacks. But research TLER and how it may effect windows programs. Pros: Good for movies, music, internet, older games should not have a problem with the TLER (non 64bit OS games should play great). Cons: TLER on this hard drive is good for a server system, but when using this hard drive as a primary for Windows OS it may crash heavy programs and recover to desktop within 5 seconds, Tomb Raider 2013 crashed 3 times during a full playthrough, some heavy video or graphical programs will be effected by the TLER too. This hard drive is not recommended for HD Gaming or video editing enthusiasts (you may still get these applications to work but not with perfect performance). This hard drive is great for a primary SATA II system (like the Core 2 CPUs) for general purpose windows usage. The Western Digital RE4 is also great as a secondary hard drive in a SATA III system (like the I-Series CPUs) for archival storage of media and movie watching.
