I could no longer tolerate the time it took to backup my SSD video capture cards to a USB Raid Enclosure. I have use WD RAID cabinets for many years and know the software. So I decided to get the empty box and put a pair of 16TB drives in it. The 10TB RAID 1 array I have in my editing computer was at capacity. The transfer speed over a network more than tripled what I was getting across USB 3. On location I carry a router so USB is not a limitation, I can run 1000GB ethernet with a power cord and a few cables. One drawback. this is not a hot swap system. In fact, it does not like to have the disks changed. The good news, it works, the bad news, you better know what you are doing. There is no on/off switch. You must wait until the power light goes solid blue and the drive lights go red. About 5 minutes. Then with the administration software tell it the drives are ok to use. Then your back in business. The real beauty, it has two USB 3 ports. I plugged in an Atomos drive dock and transferred the dailies directly to the server. it took 1 hour to copy 450 GB from an SSD to the server. Depending on your production requirements, and your passion for backup files, I can see having one of these for each camera on the shoot.

This is the third WD NAS I have purchased. The first being an EX4, which I never felt was adequate, but it worked well enough over eight years ago. I then, four years later, purchased a PR4100 and relegated the EX4 to my backup to my PR4100. Well, the EX4 was no longer serviceable, and basically quit working, so I bought this PR4100 to replace the EX4. These PR 4100’s work so much better than the EX4 ever did. And while I put off upgrading to WD OS-5 for as long as possible, to allow WD to work out the bugs, I did upgrade about six months ago, and it seems quite stable and user friendly. I keep little to no files on my computer, but run the primary NAS as my C Drive in RAID 10, and then do a synchronized back up that NAS onto a second NAS, also in RAID 10. My data ... My data isn’t worth the storage devices I have on them, but there should be a slim chance that I should ever loose what I have using this arrangement. WD is THE BEST for helping resolve any problems I have ever had with any of these NAS units, and I use Red Drives in the bays, and knock on wood, they have held up great so far. I don’t use PLEX or any other APPs other than my backup APP, so I cannot give you any information on that, but I do regularly use the remote APP on my iPhone/iPad, and OS-5 and the newest APP work quite well, with few failures to connect, which was very common on OS-3 with the older APP.

Important -- I bought this unit about two years ago with software version 3. This version allows you direct access to your network. However, Western Digital has new software, version 5, with upgraded security features but this removes the ability to connect to computers over the network and will REQUIRE ALL DATA TO BE SENT OVER THE INTERNET to the NAS. If you upgrade to V.5 you will not be able to go back to V.3. I believe v.4 was skipped. It also cannot support SSDs, which limits its usefulness these days. I tried using a WD Red Nas SSD in a support cage, but the NAS could never find it. If these two issues were fixed then the NAS would be a no-brainer buy. But if yours comes with firmware version 5 then you are limited by your internet speeds and bandwidth caps ... MoreImportant -- I bought this unit about two years ago with software version 3. WD has generally been a great hardware platform with solid HDD performance for decades. But, NAS requires software. WD have never been able to deliver reliable software or even software designed to meet bare expectations above the level of a home user. WD's development teams don't seem to comprehend why or even what that software should do. The PR series is a "professional" level family of products that barely meets that designation. It's a semi-professional player wrapped in nursery school software. It's a semi-professional player wrapped in nursery school software. My latest PR2100 purchase was due to complete lack of trust in OS5, the mandatory NAS OS upgrade required because WD had failed so badly on security of the prior OS3 version (with customers uninformed and none the wiser.) It offered no rollback capability and no reasonable data recovery option in the event of a failed major OS. That and the ignorant efforts leading to the necessity of OS5 are inexcusable any way you slice them. Making yet another unfortunate purchase seemed my only way to proactively address WD's total disrespect of customer data. I would have a blank slate for the upgrade and could later migrate from the old NAS. While awaiting the new NAS I found a less expensive alternative to offload a disaster recovery copy. The new NAS was returned unopened for refund. Sadly, OS5 is an embarrassing and childish bit of work that has severely damaged WD's image. It's clear that WD leadership and development teams are clueless and far from any reasonable quality metrics and best practices. It's simply unfathomable how WD can allow this to continue.
This is a good solution for me since I don't want to get involved with third party clouds and I have two computers. I had an old My Cloud that WD stopped supporting for access away from home and was too small anyway. The newer My Cloud requires internet access even if you are in your house (?), but not this model. I like that it can be configured as a RAID so the loss of either drive won't be catastrophic. Setting it up wasn't bad. It has a lot of capabilities and options, so it is a lot more complicated than just an external hard drive. Mostly it is just time consuming to move files over. The fan was always going for the first couple of days so it was really loud but I think that is because I was loading it with files and it was indexing them. After the first ... The fan was always going for the first couple of days so it was really loud but I think that is because I was loading it with files and it was indexing them. After the first couple of days the fan rarely runs and it is very quiet. Maybe if you were streaming video from it the fan would restart, but I'm not doing that. There is a delay when accessing a file while the drives spin up, but otherwise this is much faster than the old MyCloud. I haven't tried to connect any external drives to it (which was painfully slow on the old My Cloud). One nice feature is putting the app on your phone and/or iPad so that they will back up photos from those devices easily and quickly. I will say keep an eye on prices. It was cheaper for me to buy the empty My Cloud and then get 2 4TB drives separately from Best Buy. Then I found another place that had the same WD Red drives even cheaper, so I was able to save a good bit.
I bought the original EX2 and that's why I purchased this. The original EX2 was nice to use out of the box, but after WD updated the software, there was a little bit of improvement in performance over the network, but still, not enough. With this new version, I expected major improvements, but now we have missing features that we had originally. I wanted to do so much more, but this device is not able to do it. My original EX2 is now acting real weird ever since I started getting a notification email with a coupon to upgrade to a newer model. Both that model and this model struggle to serve up our home videos recorded with a resolution over 1080p, and even the 1080p movies with a high bit rate cause problems. I have decided to not use the coupon and instead purchase a Synology base unit and then purchase two Seagate drives. Sorry WD, you lost a customer who has been buying WD for more than 20 years.
1-star based on security, which is a shame since otherwise this NAS was easy to setup, configure and use on a home network; and performance is suitable, if not perfect. However, especially for a NAS, if security is not absolutely transparent and reliable, then all you are doing is bundling up your most sensitive files for the convenience of a burglar ... who continue to favor such small electronics, both for the device itself and the contents. I have tried for weeks to get WD Support to confirm how to secure files on a home network. They can only respond about "Cloud access" from anywhere, which only introduces further security issues. They cannot confirm that a simple home network is or can be secured. This makes this NAS a useless security risk. I setup a Public ... Any laptop that connects to our home network can access both, and there is no way to block this according to responses from WD. This means that malevolent actor can plus it into their own network, and access all of your files. Unacceptable.
Pros: Easy to setup and administer. I have user accounts for my friends and family and have several groups setup so that users get relevant access. The My Cloud app (iOS, Android) and website (mycloud.com) included with My Cloud OS 5 are easy to use. RAID support allows data redundancy. There's an option to encrypt a volume with AES 256, but that can only be done when setting up the volume. Cons: The drives do not last very long. I'm replacing my first drive after 24 days of ownership. Luckily I had the NAS set to RAID1! The device can be accessed via SSH, but only as an admin. The mobile apps only allow you to add photos and videos. The website only allows you to upload files rather than a directory and its contents. If you're regularly backing up a directory (and ... I'm on Windows 10 and couldn't get Windows to reliably map the NAS as a network attached drive. Again see GoodSync or similar.
Serveral reasons: (1) doesn't use an easily removal caddy (plastic or metal) for the drives; (2) attaching side screws are only at the top, and not both top and bottom; (3) use of a screwed-in flashing to prevent the drives from moving should be used in conjunction with the disk caddies; (4) creation of a web-based file share is very awkward; (5) file sharing in general is cumbersome and difficult to setup; (6) no power button/switch - relies entirely with plugged into NAS assembly; (7) no shutdown function provided; (8) limited number of applications available; (9) majority of the so-called "free" applications either require a subscription, or a paid license; (10) customization of installed applications is cumbersome and awkward; (11) reset and/or factory ... Compared to other NAS manufacturers (Synology, QNAP, Buffalo), WD's capabilities are very limited. Would NOT recommend said "NAS" device.
unbelievably horrible technical support, this company is honestly an embarassment. For years I've been recommending your products because they were solid, so I bought a brand new cloud connected NAS for my healthcare clients. I bought this system specifically because of its proud declaration of being fully integratable with Apple. It's not, by the way, which I found out after wasting thousands of my clients money for me to figure it out. After weeks of back and forth with support, never getting called back about escalations, I've finally decided to hang up the towel after finally hearing back from L3 to just default the unit, then found out on the next call it had been closed and the process would need to be started over.
