What Katy Did Wordsworth Children's Classics by Coolidge Susan

Katy Carr is untidy, tall and gangling and lives with her brothers and sisters planning for the day when she will be "beautiful and beloved, and amiable as an angel". An accidental fall from a swing seems to threaten her hopes for the future, but Katy struggles to overcome her difficulties with pluck, vitality and good humour. About the Author Susan Coolidge was born Sarah Chauncy Woolsey in Ohio State. Her family had close connections with Yale which was and remains a university of great prestige. Like Alcott, she based her characters on herself and her family, with Katy representing Coolidge herself. She did not marry, but instead spent her time writing and enjoying social events. She is also notable for editing the correspondence between Jane Austen and Fanny Burney.

A fantastic old school story about a young family who live with their father and formidable aunt. The children are adventurous, clever and full of fun. A great book for pre-teen girls upwards. Be warned though once they have read the first one they will probably want to read the other two in the series.

Katy is my alltime favourite heroine. The eldest of 5 brothers and sisters, Katy is always getting into scrapes. One day a swing is put up in the barn, but it isn't safe...and Katy uses the swing. The inevitable accident leaves Katy with a damaged back, and a long period of recuperation. With the help of cousin Helen, Katy learns to first endure, then enjoy her changed circumstances...
