small for apartment living. you are not going to make guacamole in this, but you will freshly ground herbs and spices. Fits in palm of hand.

This purchase was the greatest thing I ever did with my life! As soon as it arrived, I couldn't wait to rip open my package and get grinding! Also, I've never used it because I hate cooking. I just bought it cos my mother-in-law told me I should have one in the kitchen. Also, also... I'm just doing this review cos we're in lockdown and I was bored.

A handy little tool for spices and medications
14 April 2021

This small pestle is very well priced and ideal for crushing tablets and small amounts of dry spices. It is lightweight and easy to store. The bowl and the pestle are finished in a highly polished ceramic, while the bottom of the bowl has a coarse finish to assist with grip.

Absolutely adorable. Excellent for crafting or quick, small herb
7 July 2021

I personally wanted this because I’m a miniatures artist & I sometimes make my own pigments & all sorts of things but it was a huge drag & unnecessary having to pull out my big mortar & pestle & wash it every time I needed to quickly grind up a pinch of something so thought this would be perfect & it is!! It’s tiny, I’ve never seen one this small before but that’s what makes it so perfect for crafting & it’d also be perfect for someone just wanting to quickly grind up some garlic or a herb or two for dinner without having to use a giant thing that’s hard to lift. The quality it excellent too!! I assumed it’s small size would mean it wouldn’t be as strong but it’s actually got a fairly heavy base for it’s size, it’s shaped smartly & it’s actually quite thick & ... MoreI personally wanted this because I’m a miniatures artist & I sometimes make my own pigments & all sorts of things but it was a huge drag & unnecessary having to pull out my big mortar & pestle & wash it every time I needed to quickly grind up a pinch of something so thought this would be perfect & it is!! I assumed it’s small size would mean it wouldn’t be as strong but it’s actually got a fairly heavy base for it’s size, it’s shaped smartly & it’s actually quite thick & strong. Seems like it’s made of ceramic or something rather than stone but don’t let that deter you, it’s good quality & looks cute as heck!! …The only downside for me personally is that the "crushing tip" of the pestle & the bottom of the inner bowl aren’t glazed like the rest of it for some reason so especially being white those areas that take the brunt of all the grinding absorb everything. I’ve noticed a lot of mortars & pestles have the same thing, there must be a reason for it but personally especially with me using it for craft so crushing pigments ect, it’d be much better for me if the entire thing was thickly glazed like the rest but I just lined the inside & wrapped the pestle with a cut up zip lock bag the couple of times I’ve used it so far & after I’ve moved house soon, I’ll seal it myself. I’m not ever using mine for food so I don’t need to worry about whatever I seal it with not being food safe. Thought I’d mention that as it’s something I find important to know ahead of time with mortar & pestles wether I want them for food or crafts. I also got the mini bowl in this brand for crafting too & it’s equally as good a quality. I’d definitely recommend & can see me buying more from this brand & Mighty Ape in the future. Hope this review helps someone, much love to all!! 🤗

An Average Mortar & Pestle
12 September 2016

This item was no more or no less than expected. The finish surface of the mortar was not adequately sanded with alumina based sandpaper post firing but it performed its intended function of crushing small materials. For serious crushing of seeds or cooking ingredients the pestle should be about one to one and a half inches longer to gain maximum leverage of the wrist doing the work. Also there should be a slip-proof underpaid included to prevent sliding around on the countertop. I made my own from the non slip mesh available in most kitchen supply stores.

Never saw a mortar and pestle this huge!
6 November 2019

Very dissatisfied. There are no specs listed on the website. Based on the picture and the price I thought this was a 3" bowl. Turns out it's huge - I've never seen one this big - about 6" in diameter. I was going to return it but I took it to the post office and was quoted $20 for shipping and Pfaltzgraff won't send me a return label. Anyone need a huge oversized mortar and pestle? I have no use or space for it.

Pestle is too small
25 October 2017

I do like the appearance of this mortar and pestle. It's so cute and fancy. But im thinking of returning it since the pestle is too small. Used it once and I had a hard time crashing and grinding the garlic since the garlic is way bigger than the head of the pestle. Other than that I think it's really good quality and fair price.

Totally Cute but ridiculously TINY
28 August 2019

A good quality authentic item. Very cute too. However, sizing on ad is incorrect 6.5 is actual external width not internal. You can literally only grind 1tsp of spice, anymore volume & your spilling it everywhere. Perfect for this though
