Winton Hog Brushes have been developed for use with Winton Oil Colour, yet, can also be used with all other oils, alkyds and acrylic colours. The brushes are developed from good quality Chinese hog bristles and is hand-set into seamless corrosion-resistant ferrules. The solid wood handles have a green stained finish with five coats of lacquer which provide protection along with a smooth finish for ease of use. The natural curve of the hog bristle produces a resilient brush which retains its ‘turned in' shape even after heavy use. The Long Flat Brush features a long flat head which is good for blending, glazing or covering large areas. This brush is made to the same specifications as the Short Flat/Bright but with a longer bristle length for greater spring and freer marks. This brush style is often used with more fluid colour.

I have had the #6 filbert brush and it has been one of my favorites. I ordered the #3 because sometimes I need a smaller brush. It's a really solid brush for a nice price. I'm not sure if it's my style or the brush itself but I don't find myself reaching for this one near as much as some of my other brushes. It's not bad, just not a favorite.

Good value for the money . Tough brushes I use for oil painting. Few hairs left behind while painting and few splayed hairs over time is normal with natural hair brushes. I can usually get a couple of 18x24 paintings worth from each brush.

Ive tried a variety of brushes (I have hundreds) and these hold up the best of all. I was using some inexpensive synthetic brushes but they only lasted for a few projects before the bristles started bushing out. For my painting style, these brushes stand the test!

I love this brush for doing many things. It is easy to clean and always does what I expect.
I was trying to replace a set I regret parting with years ago when I thought I'd never use oils again. These are the brushes that come closest to what I had. The competitor brushes I have a bunch of by a few brands and they aren't built nearly as well in shape, etc. (those lose shape and bristles while these don't); one use so far but I gave them a real beating in the washing process and also left them in turpentine for a few days. I used a brush cleaner/conditioner that made them a but softer after a brush cleaner soap while stabbing them in a metal coil...after first use and they are now even more fabulous. Will definitely buy more. Going on over 30 years of experience and a masters & bachelors at 3 too art schools - one of which recommended these in my 1st oil ... MoreI was trying to replace a set I regret parting with years ago when I thought I'd never use oils again. Will definitely buy more. Going on over 30 years of experience and a masters & bachelors at 3 too art schools - one of which recommended these in my 1st oil class there. I am a college art instructor so I'm no beginner but would buy these as a beginner and advanced painter for oils. They are far superior to what you can get at a local boutique art store or a chain store and are affordably priced on a student / artist budget. Cared for properly, I expect them to last hopefully forever. The brights have always been my favorite but I am also liking the filberts for line or detail work over the brights or rounds. Go for even numbers as a beginner, 2-12, or 4-10 depending. Note, they come very stiff due to starch or whatever they use but a washing or just use turpentine and oil like linseed with oil paint should soften them up if you don't have a conditioner or don't pre-wash them as I didn't. I'm excited to use them again and toss my other brushes. (Note, you will need a whole different set of brushes for acrylic, you can't go back and forth, for acrylic I prefer synthetic bristles but these are ok if you don't mind texture..
I extra a few bristles coming out but this was terrible. I expected a good quality brush
Love these brushes, have used them a lot over the years, mainly with oils; when cleaned and looked after they are really durable and hold their shape and bristles
I watched a video of an artist who mentioned he never washes his brushes but instead dips them in a mix of poppy and clove oil. I did this with this brush, and it has continued to work well over the last month; keeping its shape and not shading.
The 2 brushes I ordered were replacements for worn out brushes. They perform at the highest level with the hair staying together during initial usage as well as after several washings with soap to get the oils out. These brushes are an excellent value for the money. If past performance is an indicator, they will last me a good 10 to 15 years!
Now that I'm back in to painting, I've been giving these a workout, with mixed results. The smaller ones tend to splay out after some use; the larger ones tend to hold up better but give rough results. I'm forever picking out bristles after using any size. The bristles are fairly stiff and don't hold a lot of paint compared to better brands and models. They are fairly solid for student brushes. If you are a serious painter, you might want to spend a little more and get a higher quality model.
