Scrumptious Salsa! I am the biggest fan of salsa and this Woolworths salsa sure gets the thumbs up form me and my family. I really enjoyed the chunkiness with good sized pieces of tomato, capsicum, onion, green chilli and jalapeno pepper. The spice is delicious and probably one of the most spot on for flavour over many of the other more expensive brand salsas. It is mild but might be a little spicy hot for young children or those that do not like spice. It has no artificial colours or flavours which is fantastic and the ingredients are pretty good too (tomato, tomato paste, water, onion, green chilli, jalapeno, capsicum, vinegar, sugar, maize starch, salt, coriander, cayenne pepper, cumin, oregano and garlic). The price is very appealing too at only $1. 50. Overall, ... MoreScrumptious Salsa! I am the biggest fan of salsa and this Woolworths salsa sure gets the thumbs up form me and my family. Th-picy Belgian Salsa. this recyclable jar of chunky tomato salsa is graded "medium" for spiciness - but it's just a notch too hot for me. I will look for a 'mild' version next. It does taste "fresh", despite travelling from Belgium, and its friendly to vegetarians and vegans. The 3. 5 health star rating is a positive with the promise too of no "artificials". There was nothing overwhelming or intrusive in the taste despite it containing the fresh onion, capsicum and coriander that I usually do not like. Maybe in this case it is a blessing that they might be present in 'trace' quantities. I enjoyed this salsa inside a fresh salad wrap, and later the fam tried it the traditional way as a dip for corn chips. Can't tell the difference! I should start this review by saying that I'm not a massive salsa fan in general. This was easy to find in store but tends to blend in amongst the other salsas as they've all got a similar look and colours. Price wise this is a great way to budget in your favourite corn chip dip without sacrificing quality or flavour. I was pleasantly surprised with how fresh this salsa tastes. It's got all the qualities of a good salsa - I expected more spice for a medium (I love heat) but it wasn't a deal breaker for me in the end. This is addictive and I found I had to have more after my initial taste. The only downside for me was the onion chunks (I find them really unappetizing but that's a personal preference for me). Nice and chunky. I'm normally a "mild" person so this had a little to much heat for me but the flavour was great. I first tried it as a dip with carrot sticks. It was a great consistency and stuck to the carrot stick perfectly but without anything to cool it down, I still had a lot left over so I decided to make Nachos. They're not the prettiest things around but they tasted amazing (even my partner that doesn't like anything spicy ate it and said how good it was). (Made with a mix of Woolworths beef mince and tinned lentils with the Woolworths mild Taco seasoning and dollops of this tasty salsa). $1. 50 for 300g for a product that I was able to use in multiple ways was great, the only downside was that it has to be used within three days of opening. I wouldn't change anything about the taste, even the heat. It is a good balance as is.
Spicy salsa. I thought the Woolworths Medium Salsa would be an interesting one. It's pretty cheap at $1. 50 for the 300gm jar. It looked quite nice on the shelf next to the Mild Salsa which comes with a green lid. It took me a while to find the salsa. I looked in the sauces aisle with the curries and pasta sauces But it was in the chips and snacks aisle next to the corn chips. The front of the jar shows this is 2 out of 3 chillis on the chilli scale It is made withno artificail colours, flavours or preservatives. It is made in Belgium. Each 50gm serving is 2 calories, with 2. 8gm sugar and 200mg sodium per serving. Storage instructions say once opened, refrigerate and consume within 3 days. I had to plan my meals for this. I had it on one day with veggie sticks and corn chips, then I had it another day on top of an omelette.. I found this a lot spicer than expected. Some found it too spicy and would prefer a the mild version. I found it was quite fresh tasting and really enjoyed it as an alternative to dips. Would buy this again.
Mild and flavoursome. I’ve taken off a star as it’s a product of Belgium and I’d prefer an Australian product. Having said that the salsa I usually buy is the Byron Bay brand and it only contains 68% Australian ingredients which I find really strange as the main ingredient is tomato. I think that brand should be 100% Aussie! In terms of flavour this salsa is quite tame- a slight hint of chilli but nothing that would upset the spice whimps. It’s milder than my usual salsa but the flavour is quite enjoyable. Consistency is good- can easily be dolloped. A great price of course. The day I picked mine up it was on special for $1! That’s insane!I’ll be using it on nachos, with cheese on crackers, with steak instead of tomato sauce etc. Last night’s dinner was a Mexican ... MoreMild and flavoursome. Those that wanted it hotter added some hot sauce.
Imported from Belgium. I don't buy a lot of salsa - I like to make my own sauces to control the amount of salt and sugar that goes in them. But sometimes you do need something in a hurry, and salsa-in-a-jar can fill that niche. That said, I had a hard time finding this product in the supermarket and would have given up if I were in a hurry. I assumed it would be with the Mexican foods, and indeed a lot of different salsas were there - but not this one. After a bit of thinking, I looked in the chips aisle (somewhere I rarely ever go), and managed to find it hiding on a lower shelf. The jar was easily differentiated from the Mild version by the brightly contrasting colours of the lids (green for mild, red for medium) and the large print writing on the lid. The jar was easy enough to open, and has a wide mouth which would make it suitable for using as a dip straight from the jar. The flavour was actually pretty good. I used it as a topping for vegetables, beans and rice, with avocado - a 'Mexican Dinner Bowl'. I don't like too much chilli, but this was pleasantly spicy without being firey. It tasted predominantly of sweet tomato, without too much acid or herb, and there were occasional identifiable chunks of capsicum. However, this product has a reasonable amount of added sugar and salt, which I see as disadvantages. Also, it's made in Belgium. Why are we importing salsa from Belgium, where chillis and tomatoes have to be grown in greenhouses, when we have a fantastic climate for growing them here in Australia? The price, at $1. 50, is reasonable... but I would rather pay a little more for an Australian made product. The Byron Bay Chilli Co salsa is excellent, has no added sugar, and is made in Australia from mainly Australian grown ingredients. On the rare occasion I need ready-made salsa, I'll stick to the Byron Bay Chilli Co one thanks.
Great salsa. I regularly buy this product when I give my kids nachos for dinner. I love that it comes in a number of 'heat' ratings but find that this 'medium' is a good middle ground (who would have guessed?!). It has lots of chunks in it and a nice mild spicy kick - perfect for nachos, dipping or spreading over burritos and the like. It is gluten free, so suitable for my whole family - which is always a winner for us. The jar is a great size for a single use (with my family of 6 anyway, you'd probably have some leftovers if you have a smaller tribe). I also love that the jar is glass, with a really secure lid, so it's great for using for storing bits and bobs (my husband loves them for putting screws and things in in the garage). My only disappointment with this product is the country of origin - Belgium. It would be far preferable if it had at least some Aussie product / ingredients in it. Overall, a great product for a super competitive price. I have to admit to 'cheating' on my usual patriotic tendencies for this one.
Not for me ... and made in Belgium. I was hoping this medium salsa would be better than the mild version which I had tried previously but unfortunately it wasn't. It had the same runny consistency and strong vinegary and bitter aftertaste. Added to that the cayenne pepper tasted raw like it had been sprinkled over the pot at the end of the cooking process. It also seemed to be a lot hotter than what I would expect from a medium salsa. At $1. 00 a jar it's super cheap but that's the only real positive I could find. I love a bargain but I'll never compromise on taste or quality so will happily continue to buy my favourite name brand salsa at more than twice the price. Wanna dance? On opening, a fresh, capsicum-like smell wafted up. The salsa was of medium consistency with little chunks of tomato, onion and capsicum in it. Although the capsicum content is only 4%, the salsa had a distinct capsicum taste followed by a hot-and-sweet hit from the chilli and sugar content. I'm not normally a fan of capsicum but strangely, I really liked the capsicum taste when blended with the other ingredients. I'm not a hot chilli person either, but I found this fairly mild despite the medium rating. I would have preferred this chunkier and less sweet with no added sugar. As the main ingredients are commonly grown in Australia, it would have been preferable if this product were made in Australia. It is meant to be used within 3 days of opening but it was still fresh when I finished it a week later. So did this do what it says on the tin - make your tastebuds dance?I'd say it made my tastebuds do a little triple step between capsicum, chilli and sweet tomato but it wasn't a hot Latin salsa!
