Iāve been running minimalist with sandals for a few years and got these boots to try minimalist for long-hiking for the first time. They worked perfectly. Weāve all heard the adage about ābreaking inā your shoes/boots ahead time. Well, that was completely unnecessary with these because they are inherently flexible and actually shaped like feet. The very first time I used these was on the Half Dome hike in Yosemite last weekend (17+ miles, 4500 ft. up, and 4500 ft. down in one day). They were amazing. Iāve even been dealing with some minor plantar fascia pain for a few weeks. The pain showed up the couple days before this hike, but guess what? Yes, my feet were aching and begging for a break the last few miles (how wouldnāt they after 4500 ft downhill for 8.5 miles?), but they felt invigorated the next day. The boots also had excellent traction on the granite and dirt. Such a long day hike in these boots has me even more convinced that going minimalist is best for my feet.

I stuck a piece of thin bubble wrap in between my ankle snd the boot, and it solved the issue. Now that the boots are thoroughly broken in, I donāt feel the collar rubbing my ankle anymore. So overall, I subtracted one star for the ankle rubbing issue and less ground feel, but I would recommend the boots and buy another pair if needed.

I purchased these as a replacement for my Teralfex IIās, which I never really loved. Took the Xcursions out, they fit great and comfy out of the box, and after a brief first hike (hour, moderate terrain, nothing crazy), my feet feel as great as always with Xero. Nice to have a hiker that feel Xero-light with a bit more of a water barrier than the Daylite. My only ādingā would be that for me at least, it feels like the toe box is getting narrower over time (if not overall, then maybe the proportions and specific dimensions are changing?). Since 2017 Iāve had Prio, 2 pairs of Daylike Hiker (still my favorite fit), a pair of sandals, Alston, Terraflex, HFS, Alpine, and now the Xcursion. I downsized from a 10 to a 9.5 in the Xcursion, as the 10 left a mile between my big toe and the front, even though the toe box width felt better. I realize the shoes will break in, and after a few months I may not notice, but right now they just feel a little snug in the width. Iāll also caveat I havenāt purchased new Xeros in a year or so, and know theyāve been working to better align the fit across all shoes. It could be that my very particular foot just falls between sizes these days. Still love them overall, no foot or joint pain, still a blast to wear, especially in the woods.
I wanted waterproof light boots that I could use to hike with my dogs in wet weather. I didn't need high snow boots or heavy insulation. After spending a few weeks researching boots (Xero as well as cheaper brands), I decided on Xero. These boots fit the bill perfectly. You get what you pay for!Following the Xero sizing recommendation, I ordered a 1/2-size larger than my usual 10, and they fit perfectly. Enough room for my toes, secure fit around heel and ankle, and a comfy fluffy integrated tongue. Quality of materials and construction have not disappointed so far. Even the laces are excellent - good and sturdy, don't untie themselves, and *gasp* aren't overlong! Just lace up, tie the knot, and go. No futzing with two knots or wrapping around your ankle to take up slack. Well done, Xero!I've been using minimalist shoes (or going barefoot as much as possible) for over a decade, so these boots feel very natural to me.The sole is fairly hard and protects my feet from sharp objects, but doesn't allow the road feel that my lighter shoes do...but these are BOOTS, so I expect bootlike characteristics. Also, the tread is quite secure on the muddier parts of the trails.Good news! They are waterproof! Being a slightly sensible person, I haven't expected them to keep water out completely if the depth approaches the height of the boots, but for casual splashing through puddles and rivulets on the trail they're perfect.I love these boots, and I think they're well worth the money. If your needs are similar to mine, and you buy the right size, I think the Xero Xcursion Fusion will satisfy them nicely.
These are my first zero drop hiking boots, and while I realize they're not for everyone, I find them ideal for my foot shape and preferences. I get the whole "barefoot" thing now. The padding of the sole is really perfect, so that you can feel everything under your feet without it hurting. It actually makes me excited to walk on different surfaces -- grass, gravel, rocks, leaves, pavement -- just so I can experience the different sensations that I never noticed before. I guess that's what they mean when they say "Live life feet first," which at first I thought was just a catchy slogan but which I now genuinely identify with, as strange as it is to say. So in summary, the whole ethos of the shoe is as-advertised as far as I'm concerned. I guess that's what they mean when they say "Live life feet first," which at first I thought was just a catchy slogan but which I now genuinely identify with, as strange as it is to say. So in summary, the whole ethos of the shoe is as-advertised as far as I'm concerned. Really, really phenomenal boots if the barefoot feel is your thing. Standard disclaimer that you should give yourself time to adjust before tackling any thru-hikes, though. As far as standard technical hiking boot stuff, the waterproofing is not just good, but excellent, at least for me. I tested it by sloshing my feet around in a lake and not only did the water not penetrate, but it wicked off like goose feathers. Super cool. Before I got them, I was worried that the fit would be an issue, as it says they run small and you should get a half size up, but I'm a size men's 13 and the next size up is the 14s, which I was afraid would be too large. I ordered 14s anyway, but while I waited for them to arrive I went to my local REI and tried on the 13s, which fit pretty well, although they might have been a bit narrow. When the 14s arrived, they were quite a bit larger than I was used to, with maybe three quarters of an inch extra room in the toe. But once I laced them up, the straps on the sides (which are apparently adjustable? Not sure if this is what they meant by that but anyway) cinched down and the whole boot molded to my foot without sliding around at all, like in Back to the Future when Marty puts on the boot and the size changes to fit him. It was crazy. Long story short, the extra size wasn't a problem at all, and I'm actually enjoying the extra space in the toe. I've got plenty of room to add hiking socks (which takes care of some of the extra space), plus insoles if I need them, which so far I haven't. Which, not to get off on a tangent, but the fact that I don't need insoles in these boots is mind-blowing to me, since I had flat feet as a kid and they're still pretty sensitive to most boot shapes. Anyway, my advice to you is to follow the company's advice and err on the larger side, since these boots do a great job of making up the difference as if by magic. Super cool. Now for some disadvantages (all boots got 'em). First of all, to address the common complaint that bending the boot creates a crease that pinches/pokes your toes and causes discomfort: I've definitely experienced this, specifically on my left foot for some reason (with both the 13s and the 14s -- weird), but it's not a deal-breaker for me by any stretch of the imagination. For one thing, it's not that uncomfortable for me. For two, it doesn't happen all the time. I usually notice it when I first put them on, but after an hour or so of wear, I either stop noticing it or it stops happening. For three, I suspect that as I break them in, the crease will even out and eventually (hopefully) go away entirely. Your mileage may vary, and it's definitely a design flaw, but not a terrible one in my experience. The other flaw is that the tongue has a tendency to poof out when you lace the boots up, which can lower the comfort level and possibly compromise the waterproofness higher up. There's an easy fix, though: just flatten out the tongue as you lace up the boot so all of it stays tucked in, and it shouldn't give you any more problems for the rest of the wearing session. Again, your mileage may vary, but neither of these issues are enough for me to not give these boots five stars. I'm genuinely super impressed with them and they've changed the way I think about hiking and about hiking boots. You can stop reading now, since the rest of the review is just some additional testimonial and not tied to specific features of the boots. I just really like them and enjoy talking about them. So, recently I had to give a research presentation at my university, and it involved standing in one place for hours on end, which is usually very uncomfortable for me. Normally, I find myself shifting my weight from foot to foot and leaning on my surroundings to relieve my feet, which get pretty sore if I stand in one place for too long. When wearing these boots, though, I found that I was able to stand comfortably pretty much the entire time without having to shift my weight or lean on anything. I don't know what magic went into these boots but that's a pretty big W as far as I'm concerned.I also recently took them out for a test hike of a few miles, and I can say that the claim that at the end of a long hike, you might forget you're wearing these boots is pretty well-deserved. My calves were certainly sore as I'm still not 100% used to the way the barefoot design activates different muscles yet, but my feet felt great and I was actually sad to be taking the boots off when I got home. All in all, I love these boots. Good hiking gear has its job and does it well enough, and that's that, but these boots are next level. It's rare when a piece of gear actually changes how I think about hiking, but these boots are that one-in-a-hundred piece of gear. Can't wait for my next hike in these boots!
I had been wearing another brand of barefoot hiking boots but their sizing changed and they were no longer comfortable, so I decided to try Xeros. I am female and wear a size 12 so typically have to get men's shoes. And same for Xeros, they just don't go up big enough for my feet, so I went with the men's and went half a size up as recommended. When I opened the box and picked them up I was immediately impressed by how lightweight they were. I had a little anxiety about how stiff they felt. After my first hike the stiffness was completely gone and they were very flexible. I also had the opportunity to test the waterproofness of them and they were perfect. Not a drop on my socks.A couple of issues are keeping them at fours stars for me. I can't get them a comfortable tightness when I tie them. They have a lot of padding and the eyelets are soft so I feel like when I leave the house they are perfect but a couple of miles in I have to start tightening them. There is something in the ankle that pokes me so I have to adjust the tongue regularly to cushion it. And last thing is that something about the soles does not let my foot have the range of motion I have had in other barefoot shoes so I keep getting a cramp in my big toe. I'm delicate I guess.Overall, I would recommend them to others and will be getting a pair for my husband as well. Looking forward to trying some of the sandals this summer.
I've been using minimalist shoes for more than 10 years, and became used to zero drop. Totally don't understand why anyone still makes shoes that have an elevated heel - I find them uncomfortable, even if it's a lesser 6 or 8mm offset. So much mis-information out there, I tried several hiking boots that people were calling 'minimalist' only to find they had a typical 12mm drop. Other boots with zero drop are ridiculously wide, and have a super squishy marshmallow sole that is not supportive, and IME prone to causing my ankle to roll.Xero has nailed the three things that are most important: 1) zero drop 2) nice width in forefoot without being too exaggerated and 3) a firm mid-sole with decent lugged sole underneath. Fantastic! Such a difference compared to the boots I've been using, absolutely love my Xero's!Five stars for getting these things right. I have a few improvements to suggest, but in no way do I want to detract from the awesome work Xero have done.- While the forefoot width is perfect for my medium width foot, the volume of the boot is quite large. That is fixable fortunately, I put a flat, 6mm thick insole under the factory insole and my feet are now quite happy.- The heel is a bit wide, ideal fit for me would be a little more snug and maybe a bit more supportive heel cup.- The rubber used on the sole is not as grippy as a typical Vibram sole. I'd prefer a Vibram type rubber, with 5mm lugs. For reference, since feet come in so many shapes and sizes - when I say that mine are medium width, the boots that fit me well are Merrell Moab2, Asolo Falcon, Salomon X Ultra 4. All of those have a huge heel drop so they will not be seeing much use now that I have Xero's. Merrell used to be a leader in zero drop footwear, but they abandoned the hiking market - makes me all the more grateful for Xero taking their place!
The Xcursion Fusion ā Men is a very comfortable shoe. It's extremely light weight (in general and especially for a boot) and feels nice on the feet. My feet do get a little warm after extended wear but that's to be expected with a fully waterproof shoe. It's not really that noticeable and being in a hot climate contributes to the heat. Comparable "regular" shoes are unbearably hot after 30-60 minutes, while I can wear Xcursion Fusion all day and barely notice a rise in temperature. In fact, I would usually change into a pair of sandals (Z-Trail EV ā Men) because of how hot my feet would get but the Xcursion Fusions stay on my feet all day. They're so comfortable and light weight that I sometimes forget that they're on my feet. The soles are flexible and offer a good feel of the ground while also providing good traction. This shoe seems to run only slightly small so a half-size larger will give a relaxed fit while your usual size may be just slightly snug. I ordered a half-size lager and it is just barely a little loose for me but my personal preference for this type of shoe is a snug fit. The Bison color is a gorgeous dark brown on black and the shoe looks beautiful. It's nice to have a pair of boots that don't make my feet hurt and also look so good.

They are so comfortable on your feet and so roomy, but at the same time they fit really snugly. I don't know how they have made shoes so differently than the traditional boot - it's like they have an entirely different approach to making shoes. I don't know how they have made shoes so differently than the traditional boot - it's like they have an entirely different approach to making shoes. It is almost like i've been wearing the wrong kind of boots my whole life and then with this brand have finally found what a boot is really supposed to be made like. I was honestly worried I wasn't going to like them at first trying them on and hiking with them because they are so different. Flexible and roomy, lightweight as heck. They somehow manage to make them waterproof but still have the ability to keep your feet pretty cool. They are SO DIFFERENT it's insane. It is almost like my feet have finally found the thing they are supposed to be wrapped in and placed in. My feet love them and I love them since my feet are happy. I thought I couldn't get better boots than my last ones (different brand), although I was proven wrong with these. I gave these boots four stars because for hiking boots I would expect them to be grippier on steep declines and inclines. They are pretty slick. I slipped a few times and almost fell where with other boots I don't feel like I would have. These boots ended up being the boots I just wear all day and around town or the ranch working since they are so nice on my feet. Will probably try the other model of boot they offer to see if they have more grip and are better suited to what I like to do. Five stars for this company for sure. They are on to something that i've never seen any other company be on to with the whole "barefoot" idea. Give them a try and you'll thank me later.
