I bought this rack on my Jeep spare 35"x12.5" tire, the rack works great. It fits snug against the tire without rattling. The bikes which I can see in my mirror also fit snugly without rattling around. The installation instruction are clear and easy to follow. The lock cable that comes with it is not a high security cable, yet the locking knob seems to work well in design and function and its handy they they are keyed the same. In my opinion the clean simple lines add to the product. In addition, my Jeep is lifted 2.5" above stock ride height. Perfect for small cars that have a spare wheel on the back. Easy to set up. I did need a hand when I was putting it onto the wheel but once they hold it for 30 seconds can be done yourself. Instructions easy to follow. Again would recommend for a small car with a spare.

Great but not for full-suspension bikes

Be careful if you have rear suspension. This rack does not like rear suspension. If you have rear suspension, this is a 2-star or 3-star product. Otherwise, 4 or 5 stars. So, it’s easy to mount if you’re familiar with removing your spare; if not, could take you some time. But when properly mounted, it’s solid, tight, no vibrations. Very slim profile — it’s hardly there when you have the hinged top folded down (and no bikes). The mounting brackets for each of 2 bikes are nifty — they obviate the need for bungees. Everything about it is smooth and slick. But, yeah, if your bike has rear suspension, it might not fit. Mine did not. I’ve got like 1/16” of space to spare and have to wiggle it on. So, I’m happy with the result. But if your bike does not fit, you’ve been warned.

Great rack for those who have a spare on the back
10 August 2023

This is a great rack and is super easy to install. If you can remove your spare tire, you can install it with no problem. Works great for my 2023 Land Rover Defender, the middle length post is a perfect fit for the standard 22 inch rims. The biggest thing to keep in mind is that full suspension mountain bikes can require a bit of creativity to mount due to the SpareRide holding them at two points on the top tube and one point on the seat tube. Depending on the anatomy of your bike I can see this rack maybe not working, but for all other bikes you'll be good to go.

I have a 1998 4Runner with CBI swing out bumper, 315/75R16 (35"x10") tires, and 16x8 -25mm offset rims. Obviously not stock and probably not even close to anyone else's setup. Maybe some jeep owners with big tires will be close. To properly mount, I had to remove the tire bumpers by drilling out the rivets (easy mod). I found that the thru bar fit loosely in the adaptor bracket, so I lined the edges with plastic (cut up container from trash), and hammered into place with rubber mallet. Otherwise, I fear that it will move/vibrate too much over rough roads. I also used Loctite on the allen bolt. With everything installed very tight, the whole setup still moves a lot.Fitment wise, it fits my Ghost Kato hardtail ok. See pics. Because my truck tire doesn't sit 90 ... MoreI have a 1998 4Runner with CBI swing out bumper, 315/75R16 (35"x10") tires, and 16x8 -25mm offset rims. With everything installed very tight, the whole setup still moves a lot.Fitment wise, it fits my Ghost Kato hardtail ok. See pics. Because my truck tire doesn't sit 90 degrees, the bike will not fit into one of the mounts (when hanging straight down) which is fine because the bottle holder interferes too. I was able to get the supplied cable lock to fit through both tires, frame, rim, and tire carrier mount. Therefore no one can steal anything without cutting cable, plus if anything does break, it will all fall off and drag behind me while I pull to the side of freeway (avoiding killing school bus full of children).I have little faith in the longevity of this setup, after having driven down all kinds of crazy roads with my tire carrier bumper. Every few years I have to weld up the cracks that form from vibrating. The extra weight of carrier and bikes will accelerate the wear. Something to think about if you have a tire carrier and bomb down dirt roads.I was able to fit my cheap Walmart Mongoose full suspension bike on there with some finagling. If the mounts that hold the bike do not line up to your liking, it is possible to unscrew the bolt and re-drill/tap new mounting locations. My truck sits about 7' tall and barely fits in my 7' tall garage. The bikes sit a few inches higher than my truck. Getting the Ghost Kato on is fairly easy, the Mongoose is heavier and harder to fit. The Kato takes less than 5 minutes to fit and lock down. Both bikes will take maybe 5-10 minutes.

I truly enjoy the "idea" of this spare tire bike rack and I'm a Yakima user for now many years. This rack is quick sturdy and appears great, except it's a bit heavy versus the one I replaced that I bought in the 1990's. BUT I have a BIG problem. It "looked" tall, but the exact dimensions from the spare tire center to the top of the rack were never provided. Further, REI (where I bought mine) did not have one in stock. So, I had it mailed out to me. I started install and immediately found the problem. It will not fit given the rack I have over my spare tire. Other ones do fit, but this one, even when mounted in the lower position, is just much too high. So, I would like to recommend to Yakima to show mounting dimensions for their products for now on. Many folks like me with my old YJ Wrangler Renegade will have all sorts of stuff mounted all about their vehicle. If you only provided more dimensions then you'd remove customer anxiety and then on your end the time to ship and received now used products...a win, win all around, but you need to do the work on your end first. Thank you for your time.

It worked, but there's a catch
31 May 2023

So, I'll say that this bike rack is perfectly functional. It was easy-ish to install and held my ancient, heavy steel-framed bike with little problem. I say easy-ish to install because working out which post to use involved taking the spare tire on and off a few times. Full size wheels are heavy. Otherwise, not a problem. My issue, though, is the posts. There are three posts that go with the rack: short, medium, and long. Like I said, figuring out the right one might be tricky if your wheel size isn't normal. But there is a significant difference between the long and medium posts, versus the medium and the short posts. The medium and short are 1.5 inches apart, while the long and the medium are a hair over 2.5 inches apart. The medium and short are 1.5 inches apart, while the long and the medium are a hair over 2.5 inches apart. For my slightly larger than average wheel (30x9.5 with -12 offset), the medium post was too short and the long post left a quarter inch gap between the rack and the tire. That's going to lead to shaking and torque on my spare tire. If there was a way to order a slightly shorter long post, I'd do that. I could cut the post and drill a new hole, but I'm not confident enough in my machining skills to pull that off correctly. So I'll be returning the product, but not necessarily because it's a bad product. There was just one specific design choice that made it not work for me. I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars, but it looks like it will work fine for someone with a larger or smaller wheel than mine.

Love My SpareRide
18 September 2021

I had to replace my Yakima SpareRide that was on my Jeep Liberty for 12 years because the knob screw lifting and lowering the arms was stripped. I love the improvements and upgrades to this wonderful, easy to install and simple to use bike rack. My husband purchased another brand to replace my old one , but after struggling with the complicated set up, straps, etc. we returned it and hunted for another Yakima SpareRIde. I love the new handle that lifts and lowers the arms (so quick and easy), and the very easy-to-use clips that hold my bikes in place. The rack and bikes sit higher than the old model, so a little less visibility out my back window, but I like that there is more clearance for the bikes. I can still operate my back window and tail gate, and it sits ... MoreI had to replace my Yakima SpareRide that was on my Jeep Liberty for 12 years because the knob screw lifting and lowering the arms was stripped. Perfect rack for a Jeep Wrangler!
8 November 2022

Finally got tired of shoving my bike into the cab of my Jeep and bought the Yak SpareRide...couldn't happier with the purchase. Install was simple and the fold-down feature is convenient. The ratchet clips are a little tricky at first but hold the bikes securely while driving. The locking mount knob is awesome and having a simple cable lock that is keyed-alike with the knob is so convenient. Overall, it's a pretty slick system that is solidly built and well-refined for my needs.

Surprising benefits....
12 December 2022

I've had this bike rack for a few years on my 2003 Jeep Liberty and it's always worked great, but that's not why I'm leaving a review. The other day, I was rear-ended pretty hard at a red light by a pickup truck. It ended up being a hit and run, but it was okay because this bike rack (and the spare tire, to an extent) protected the rest of my car from potentially heavy damage. The only thing that broke was the red locking knob on the bike rack, while my car and the rest of the rack were left completely intact. The collision didn't even dent the bar, it just kind of scuffed it. I got a look at the guy who hit me and the front of his pickup was caved inwards in a vertical line that perfectly matched the vertical bar of the rack. I'm going to order a new locking knob ... MoreI've had this bike rack for a few years on my 2003 Jeep Liberty and it's always worked great, but that's not why I'm leaving a review.
