Awesome 2 channel integrated amp!

I had what is basically this same product, also a Yamaha, but 30 years older. It was still working fine, but lacked digital inputs and a sub out. I’ve had a number of Yamaha products over the years and they have always been reliable. Can’t go wrong with this brand. My only wish, as others have stated, is that this amp had a small LED light on the volume knob so you can see how much it’s turned up from across the room before you start playing something and blast it too loud! My old one had a light, so this seems like backwards progression.

It is Totally Awesome!!!You have plenty of power for 2 sets of speakers. You need to be able to turn up the Knob to have “headroom”! The 7.2 amp by Yamaha was too much power.I hoped that this review has helped someone!!! Seems like most people don’t talk about speakers and sub woofers. It’s all connectedIf you do these things the power will come.

Uprated iteration of What Hifi 5-star A S500, the 501 adds Burr Brown DAC and coaxial digital connection. This also makes possible APTX enhanced Bluetooth connection via Yamaha dedicated YBA 11 adapter. Not only does it sound better than standard Bluetooth it has 20 metre range and proper WIFI stability. Higher bit-rate sources brings this amp to life with solid bass and meticulous midrange and top end detail. Only reason What HIFI gave the 501 a 4-star rating was Yamaha bumped the rrp up to 350, pushing it into a higher market segment. However, shop around on Ebay and you can get them for around 250. If you are in the market for a budget amp, the 501 should not be overlooked

Excellent - but listen first

I bought this amp after comparing it to the pm6005 and, perhaps oddly, the Cambridge audio sr10. We used q acoustic 3020 speakers and played about 6 songs on each from a range of genres using a Cambridge audio CD player. I made an absolute nuisance of myself. So as the chap in the shop pointed out rightly, everyone's ears are different, but for me, to my surprise the pm 6005 came out worst. It was just kind of flat. The Cambridge did best of the bunch on hip hop and driving bassy Rock music, because it was just fun (although not the clearest) but the Yamaha was the definite winner on more indie and acoustic numbers, as well as classical and jazz. As these latter categories are what I mostly sit and really carefully listen to the Yamaha was a no brainer. If I'm listening to hip hop and driving rock I'm probably in a party mood and thus likely inebriated, rendering relatively small differences in sound quality unimportant.

Fabulous value for the price.

Over the years, I have had a few nice amplifiers, working for prestigious HI FI shops and owning and listening to some really expensive equipment. I am not saying that this little Yamaha is the best ever, however for £250 what more do you realistically need? The defining feature for me was the way in which the design does away with the usual potentiometer for controlling the volume. It uses a resistor ladder arrangement fed I believe by an optical sensor, much more accurate and with long term stability than even the best ALPS pots. It's ability to just amplify without restriction the source is capable of making me giggle at times and makes me realise that some equipment just sounds compressed in comparison.I do have some rather tasty studio monitors and fed by ... MoreOver the years, I have had a few nice amplifiers, working for prestigious HI FI shops and owning and listening to some really expensive equipment. Great buy!

My first good stereo was in 1973. It amazes me the level of quality you can get today with relatively little money. This Yamaha amp sounds really, really good at its price point. It is powerful, musical, and natural sounding. However, these qualities are only evident when when the Pure Direct circuit engaged. Without it, it can sound a little thin and tinny. The amp even has a phono section.BTW, the real RMS power specification is 85 watts per channel @ 8 ohms.Highly recommended.

Nearest to perfect amp I have ever had
14 May 2019

Finally, an amp with deep sub-bass response. The sound stage is the tallest (widest range of frequencies) and widest (most detailed and spacious) I have ever heard. It's picky though. The speaker output in pure direct mode lacks body. You have to disable pure direct and fix it with the loudness knob (which is a godsend). Then you can control any level of bass even at low volumes. As for headphones, this is the strongest headphone amplifier I have ever encountered. Headphones of hundreds of ohms are no problem. And the sub-bass response even in pure direct mode is unmatched by anything I have ever encountered. Although in some cases (Focal headphones) bordering on a little too dark. It's a large unit. So check the dimensions before purchasing. If like me you have ... MoreFinally, an amp with deep sub-bass response. And even if you're not using speakers, if you have the room for such a large appliance then this may also be one of the best headphone amplifiers around.

Plenty of power for clean sound
24 July 2019

I bought this for listening to music and have it paired with a pair of Polk S60’s. The sound is a little bright but I’m not sure if that’s the amp or speakers. But I just adjusted the treble and bass to what I prefer and it sounds excellent. It really brought my speakers to life. Depending on your preference you could really get away without a subwoofer. I didn’t have mine hooked up for the first few months. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who wants clean power for a music setup.

Replacing a Yamaha Aventage RXA 1020 with 110W/C
9 May 2016

I was very concerned about the wattage difference 110 compared to 85. Not a concern it was evident upon turning it on. Driving a pair of Def Tech SM 55s, and sub out to a SVS PB 1000. The SM 55s are Bi wired to the 501. I enjoy stereo music most of all so I made the change. Gonna let my Sony Bravia do the switching and use the toslink for TV, Pandora, and all my TV apps, to the 501. I know no surrond. But I really hear a diiference in the 2 channel, this amp has punch, and even seems to give the SVS a bigger bite. Using a Marantz PM 5005 CD player to spin my digital music. The combo of the Marantz and the 2ch 501 is great. I have not hooked the toslink to the Bravia yet so I dont know how that is gonna work out. I will miss the networking to my PC for my lossless digital music, but an XBOX 1 will fix that hooked to the Bravia then Toslink to the 501. The 1020 always sounded processed the 501 sounds real and hard, with presence. Thats it presence what we are looking for in music. I will follow up on the toslink when I hook it up. Great for stereo music lovers.

Top class amp
21 June 2018

Bought this last week from the Maidstone branch. Managed to get one of the very last in the store. It was an open box purchase having just been used for demo purposes. Todd sorted me out a great deal once again. Really happy with the amp. I've paired it with a Denonturntable and Yamaha CD player, both also bought from Richers in the past six months! Pumps some amazing sound through myB&W floor speakers. Great buy, that I would thoroughly recommend anyone looking for a classy looking sturdy amp to purchase. Also top class service from Richersounds. That's why I will always go back to them.
