If you have a tight budget, always go with Yamaha guitars. Most bang for the buck. This guitar is great for smaller folks looking for a smaller body guitar. It is great for finger-picking and light strumming. Also, a nice size for travelling. However, if you are a heavy strummer, this probably is not for you.Otherwise, this a fantastic guitar. Easy to play and the built-in electronics are as good as any guitar I have owned (including my Taylors). I use it amped at church and it is impressive.

While the cosmetics get compliments, its important above anything with the sound these instruments get.I am very glad I did not need to pay up so much more because the sound from my FG830 really to my ears sounds just as good if not better. It's fun and sounds so nice with not even half a year playing into it yet.So with the solid spruce top, and as I take care of it and age with it, I'm really excited to hear how it sounds as it "opens up."The tuners stay in tune no problem, there weren't any issues with finish, fret heights--- I don't feel like selling it ever. I know people learn on these and I am a seasoned player who can see that for beginners or experienced players also, you do not have to "fight with" playing this instrument at all. It sort of plays through you, in a way. It encourages you to keep learning. Hard to put down.Again, at the price, this is so fun to play and I'm really impressed.I play mainly blues, and acoustic rock that can handle strumming with some oomph, and songwriting on this guitar.

Beautiful and easy to play - for a 12-string anyway. I've owned MUCH more expensive 12's and can testify that you'd have to cross the thousand dollar threshold in order to get a better acoustic sound. A true joy to play and hear. Of course there's no electronics which may or may not be a plus or minus for you, but that can be easily remedied with a $50 soundhole pickup. One thing that cannot be remedied is the narrow neck that makes fingerprinting a REAL challenge! So just be aware that this guitar excels at what 12-srings excel at - strumming and some flat picking, but not so much fingerpicking. A really terrific guitar except for that.

I have enjoyed playing this guitar.
28 April 2024

I bought this guitar used from a more experienced player. I am playing again after a very long hiatus. The guitar sounds good to my admittedly unskilled ear, and I received compliments on its tone from the instructor teaching my group lesson. One of the other students in my group experienced issues with his guitar, and the instructor indicated that it needed to be repaired by a luthier. I think I am fortunate to have made a good purchase considering my level of experience. Prior to purchasing the guitar, I read many on-line reviews, and the consensus was that Yamaha provides a good value for the price. As I work to improve my skill, I don't anticipate a need to upgrade my guitar.

Legit good guitar!
9 February 2024

I will add to the accolades for the Yamaha FG800-this is a legitimately good guitar! It's lightly built, and the sound is lively and resonant with good volume and clarity for both picking and strumming. It just looks, feels, and sounds "good." It's a way better instrument than I was expecting at this price, and frankly it's better than many guitars that cost a lot more. No, it's not at the level of my high-end Martin, Collings or Santa Cruz acoustics. But it's no slouch, and it's literally 1/20 the price of those other guitars! My only minor criticisms are slightly sharp frets and no strap button. Bottom line: it's straight up fun to play. It's perfect as a starter guitar, a travel guitar, or as a guitar to leave out in the TV room or keep in DADGAD. Not bad for the price
11 September 2024

Have played guitar since 1996 and I was surprised by the amount of sustain, volume and resonance. The neck is nice. Plays pretty well. I feel like the High E end has a bit of twang to it, but it could be the strings that I am hearing (you might need a well trained ear to hear what I'm hearing). I've had a few acoustics in the $ range and this is definitely the better one. It was a gift for my son who is learning. He's very happy with it as an upgrade for a much worse acoustic he started with. Absolutely acceptable for a starter guitar or if you just want a cheap acoustic to use.

Oh man, I can just go on and on about this. I have owned at least four other Yamaha's, two were laminated bodies and were great, one was the FG 150 back in the 70s, and then I became fortunate enough to be one of the rare owners of a handmade FG 1500. I had that for 50 years. It was stunning. Unfortunately the neck was too narrow for me and I couldn't play it so I sold it. I've always thought Yamaha were incredibly well made by a company that's an instrument maker first. I found this guitar at a lodge where my wife and I were volunteering in Montana and it was sitting out on a stand in a window and must've had 10 year old strings on it. I restrung it with some d'Addario's, and I was blown away. I currently have five Furch guitars, a handmade nylon string and TW o ... MoreOh man, I can just go on and on about this. The Yamaha FG800 is perfect for me. It's an "intermediate" level guitar and I'm just a beginner, but I wanted a guitar I could grow into.I tried 2 other guitars first thinking they might be right for me. Both were smaller, acoustic-electrics: a concert and a grand auditorium size. I have long arms and long fingers, so finding the right fit wasn't easy. I melt into the FG800 dreadnought perfectly. And, the sound is brilliant-fuller than either of the other two sizes. The FG800's solid spruce top is no doubt a major factor in the sound quality.Personally, I love the look of the cutaway body-when I start using the higher frets, I'm sure I'll love the accessibility. It's so nice to be able to tune the guitar without having a clunky clip-on tuner hanging off the head of the guitar.I haven't had a chance yet to plug it in, but I'm confident the pre-amp will work nicely. The only thing I'd like to have that isn't there would be a forward strap button. The FG800 requires you to attach the strap to the head, just in front of the nut. When I do start using it, standing up and needing a strap, I could always add a button to the base of the neck. So, it's in no way a deal breaker. This guitar ROCKS - pun intended!#sweepstakes

Unbelievably good

I bought an FG830 from Sam Ash while waiting for my Martin D-35 to be built. It sounded pretty good in the store, and at home in a quieter environment it was even better... but THEN I changed the saddle and bridge pins to bone and put on Martin bluegrass strings, and WOW! It made a huge difference, improving on an already great sound. After my Martin came and I've had time with both, I'll say - this Yamaha is just as good, but in a different way. I can clearly tell one has a layered back and sides, but both have lots of personality and amazing tonal characteristics. The top on the Yamaha is extremely well done with phenomenal bracing you can feel on attack. And the back is beautifully finished. The top on the Yamaha is extremely well done with phenomenal bracing you can feel on attack. And the back is beautifully finished. The whole thing looks like a more expensive guitar than the Martin at 1/10 the price, and is very rewarding to play.Obviously the Martin can do things the Yamaha can't, mostly because of its solid back and sides, but this FG830 is not 1/10th of a Martin D-35. It's just as remarkable, but different. In fact, it's easier to mic because the low boom projects forward more and is not as overwhelming to a microphone as the D35. I highly recommend switching to bone on the FG830 though. It really brought out the richness in this beautiful scalloped top.My only negatives - I don't like the 1 and 11/16" nut width. And, being really picky, where the neck binding meets the headstock binding looks a bit like an accident. Also, if you're on the fence about one, watch the YouTube video of the Yamaha factory in China. It was built by Yamaha exclusively for their own instruments, and those people really know what they're doing.

The Yamaha FG 830 acoustic guitar goes above and beyond my expectations. The solid Sitka Spruce top and Rosewood, make a excellent pairing. The attractive abalone soundhole rosette and cream binding as around the guitar(incl. the headstock) adds to durability as well as a pleasing aesthetic. The overall sound is tonally right on . Great intonation and a joy to play. I love the overtones from the rosewood b&s as well. The guitar also has a nice attack. This guitar is good for picking at home or on stage. I recommend this one.You won't be disappointed!
