Overall:I don’t play acoustic guitar all the time as I am mostly an electric guy but, when I do I have a very specific tone that I like. If you ever listen to bluegrass music you will hear this super thick booming tone from the guitars. It’s a tone that a certain brand that starts with an “M” is known for. Having owned one of their instruments in the past, the HD-28 I am very familiar with that tone. I won’t even begin to say that this is “just the same” or “every bit as good” because reality is that it isn’t. The M guitar has a magic to it that nothing else has, the tone is so deep and clear that words can’t describe it. I had to sell that guitar due to financial hardships and I have been chasing that sound ever since. I am happy to report that this Yamaha FG830 is as close as I have gotten. Since selling my M guitar I have had a handful of acoustics, some semi pricey and others fairly cheap but every one of them fell short of what I was hoping for. A friend of mine even has one of the “budget” M guitars and it is not in the same league as the HD but, this Yamaha? It is so much closer to “that” sound than even the more expensive M guitar that my friend has. To start the guitar is very beautiful, the rosewood look of the sides and back with the spruce top and binding make it look very much like a 28 but, this one also has neck and headstock binding which makes it look even fancier than the “real” thing. The finish on the guitar is a deep gloss, even on the headstock. When it comes to looks this guitar absolutely has “IT” The neck is also something to mention, it’s so good that it deserves it’s own review. The finish is satin so it’s very smooth and fast, it doesn’t stick to your hand when you try to play. The fretboard is glassy smooth and the frets are very well finished. I had no rough edges or protruding frets on mine. A little lemon oil on the fretboard went a long way and now it is such a player! I also wanted to mention that there are no uneven frets or buzz anywhere on the neck! The action was slightly higher than my preference but a few minutes with some sand paper took care of that. Now, on to the important part, TONE! As I mentioned before, this is NOT an “M” guitar BUT, this is the closest I have found and it’s less than $400! The lows are booming but clear, the highs are crisp with excellent sustain, the midrange is pronounced and makes the instrument stand out. Chords are very clear and each note is decernable, clarity is a big part of the sound that this guitar produces. If you’re doing bluegrass licks those hammer ons and slides really pop on this thing. At the same time when you tune to D the low notes just boom with authority. The guitar just thumps you in the chest and has that “kerrang” that a great acoustic produces. I truly cannot say enough good things about this instrument. IF you have $3,000 to spend you may do better with the big boys but, if you’re like me and working on a budget I truly do not believe that you can do better than this one. I have contemplated purchasing a mid range guitar in the $1,000 to $1,500 range but I then realize that they won’t top the Yamaha. The only thing I have played that betters this guitar is the high end stuff, $3k+ So, to summarize, if you’re on a budget, looking for a guitar that you don’t have to cry about scratches on, OR if you just want a fantastic instrument at an unbelievable price THIS is your instrument. Yamaha has done such an amazing job that it’s hard to believe that they pulled it off! They have made something for the rest of us, something that fills the gap that we who cannot pay as much for a guitar as for a vehicle have to deal with. Thank you, as always, to zZounds for a wonderful experience. Fast shipping, and pay as you play!

I bought a Yamaha FS820 several years ago when I forgot to bring my guitar on a New Mexico vacation. I went into a Santa Fe music store and found this little gem on sale. I was so impressed with the sound and looks of the guitar I paid to have it shipped home to me after my vacation and I've played it a lot ever since. So I decided to try another Yamaha of the same series and see if it might be as good. I've had my FG830 now for several months and it's my go-to livingroom/patio/jam session guitar. It sounds very good, better than I could have hoped. Plays well and really looks sharp. I plan to take it everywhere with me this summer, to old time/bluegrass jam sessions, vacations and picnics. I am a fingerstyle player who has played for going on 40 years. I have owned many acoustics over the years, some good and some not so good. The quality of the FS800 is unmatched especially considering its price point. I have played guitars which were quadruple in price that cannot hold their own to this concert sized folk acoustic. Very balanced tone both upper level and lower level frequencies. Very easy to play, although right out of the box, the action was a little high and had to have the nut shaved down slightly. I would easily match this guitar, despite it being a laminate verses a solid wood, to any guitar out there in its class. If you want somthing that is fun to play as well as easy to play, the FS800 is a great choice.

I have yet to review 4 previous guitar purchases from Sweetwater...this guitar just surprised me so much I had to do one immediately. They say you get what you pay for. A lot of times that's true and paying less for something often results in poor quality. In this case you are honestly going to be stunned to see how much guitar you get for the low price of this FS830. For one the abalone inlay on the rosette is very nice. The fretboard is well done very smooth (mine is Rosewood), Frets are cleaned up nicely with no noticeable sharpness. The Frets could use a light polish as I found some rough spots during string bends. Intonation has been pretty spot on honestly with only a few spots slightly off further towards the 12 fret (which honestly isn't a big deal). Action is a little high and could probably use a bit taken off the saddle to get it right but its not unplayableby any means. Fit n finish is pretty decent too...just a couple slightly rough spots on the binding that most people wouldn't even notice and some little finish swirl spot on the neck by the body. Other than those little things the whole thing all in all is just beautiful, the Rosewood on the back looks pretty stunning and I honestly wish my Larrivee D-40R had a woodgrain pattern like it lol. I only wish I could have had one of these to start off on. This is a great bang for your buck instrument. Oh and before I forget...the sound really opened up after the strings stretched out. It's a great sounding guitar. Nice and punchy all around with a good low end. I got this mainly for taking to family functions or camping, it will serve those purposes very well. Now stop reading long winded reviews like this one and just get it already.
Bought as a gift for young beginner who's been learning on a 3/4 classical and wanted to branch out to a steel string. Full-size dreads are still a bit unwieldy for him, but my smaller Martin D Jr-10 fit him well. Though a bit larger than the D Jr-10, the FS800 still has a smaller body, a slightly smaller nut size, and a shorter scale length than a full-sized dread. It's also very easy for small hands to play due to the comfortable neck size. The action was set up about right. Most importantly, it sounds great - different, but in the same ballpark as my D Jr-10 and at half the price! I suspect the strings account for much of the difference. I've been playing for over 50 years and have acquired several very nice guitars over the years, but the price/performance of the FS800 might make it one of my best value guitar purchases. I feel comfortable that I'm giving him a quality instrument that he will enjoy playing for years to come.
I started learning a couple of years ago. My first guitar was a starter internet special. Since then I've purchased a couple of electric guitars. I only played those because the acoustic was too difficult to fret chords and play in general. I finally decided I would try a nicer acoustic guitar to see if it would be easier to play. I did my research and settled on the Yamaha. WOW! What an amazing guitar. It's just as easy to play as my tele. The slim profile neck is super comfortable. The sound is gorgeous. It's clear and very articulate. Just and amazing value. Love my Yamaha!
I bought this guitar to check out a budget friendly offering from Yamaha. I have to say I was not disappointed! Excellent tone and volume, the top really resonates. The guitar was really well setup right out of the box. It needed about 3/4 of a clockwise truss rod adjustment, no prob.Other than that it didn't need any fret dressing whatsoever. That's really impressive for a Chinese guitar. Heck even one of my Mexican Martins needed fret dressing out of the box! Also intonation was spot on and this also is important in your guitar.Very impressed with this guitar, intermediate/advanced feel but priced at a beginner budget. You won't regret picking one up, I assure you!
It is not an easy guitar to play at all. It just is not...!!! Mind you that this guitar is a low action guitar and it still is not an easy guitar to play!Second, as you're moving up the fretboard, (say!) past the 7th fret, you have to press down hard on the strings for your dear life to get the notes ring out properly. If you're pressing down on the mid point on the fret, not as near to the "metal" fret as possible, FORGET IT!!!, the sound will be either dull or muffled or worse, "dead". Can you say, "The courtesy of Yahama"!?Third, I also noticed that the quality of the sound coming out of the notes diminishes as you move up the fretboard. As a newbie, you will be impressed, trying out the guitar when playing notes down the fretboard (say!) between 1st and the 7th fret. I find it "inconsistent"!Overall, it is NOT an easy guitar to play for a beginner. If I had to do it all over again, knowing that playing guitar is not just a passing fad for me, I would have gladly spent a bit more money and gotten a Taylor with much much better "playability".Maybe there is something, not quite right with my FG830. Maybe I should take it to a guitar luthier to get it looked at.
I have had this for a couple months and I am really impressed. I had to sell my Taylor Gs mini due to financial difficulties and I just couldn’t afford to get another one. This Yamaha satisfies me in every way that the Taylor did. It plays amazing. It sounds good for it’s size and I would compare it to the Gs mini that I had. It looks exactly like the photos. The difference in price is just insane and I’m happy I don’t have to fret over bringing a $600 guitar camping out in the heat this summer. If you are looking for a camp/travel guitar or a guitar for beginners definitely pick this up. I have been playing for over 20 years and I love this thing.
I received the above guitar but with hindsite, quickly realised it was the wrong guitar. I asked PMT to exchange it for a Yamaha APX600 instead, which I am very happy with now. In all honesty, I did not play the FS820, so can not give a proper review, however, I have heard the great tone of this guitar on many youtube videos. I am very happy with the APX600 which incidentally is great. Both guitars were delivered on time and well packaged and PMT were very good with letting me exchange. My review rate of 3 stars is for the FS820, however my review rate for the APX600 is 5 stars.
