Got this as a restock (manufacturer refurbished from Yamaha) for a discounted price ($200 off plus $96 points credit). The only thing out of the ordinary I could see was a small 1cm blemish or area of discoloration in the finish on the back of the guitar which I've photo'd. Other than that this guitar showed no signs of use. I feel like I got a good deal. This thing exudes quality craftsmanship upon close examination. Love the satin finish- easy to keep clean. The sound is amazing- I've never owned let alone heard an acoustic that sounds this good. The tone is very woody w rich bass and good projection and sustain. Setup is perfect for me out of the box. The electronics work well and sound good amplified. Love the mic adjustment. I seriously can't stop playing this ... MoreGot this as a restock (manufacturer refurbished from Yamaha) for a discounted price ($200 off plus $96 points credit). This guitar is a great value and can stand up against the big names costing at least twice as much.

This guitar is a great value for what you pay. A similar spec Martin or Taylor is twice as expensive (solid wood body; ebony fingerboard, bridge, & bridge pins; torrefied top, etc...). The only reason this costs less is because of brand name and Made in Japan (which isn't an issue imo - certainly great quality manufacturing there).Look, feel, and tone are amazing. The atmosfeel pickup system is top notch as well. Highly recommend if you are trying to find a guitar that will age well, but do not want to shell out 3k+ for a similar quality made in america guitar.

My 1st really good guitar
27 July 2021

I have gone from a good guitar, Epiphone DR500 Mastercraft, to a really good guitar, the FGX5. The difference is very noticeable.I still like my Epiphone and will keep it, but the very warm, rich, balanced tone and resonance that comes out of the FGX5 is butter. As poor of a guitar player that I am, I can't keep my hands off of her.Due to my OCD I want to get the FGX5 set up. With that said, she felt and sounded good right out of the box. I think the action might be a bit high, but other than that, what a sweet guitar. I did change strings to Elixir #11 nanoweb. I like them better than what the guitar came with; but I l think it's mostly b/c I'm a novice. When I plug the FGX5 into my Positive Grid Spark amp it's not bad, but remember, it is just a practice amp. ... MoreI have gone from a good guitar, Epiphone DR500 Mastercraft, to a really good guitar, the FGX5. When I plug it into my Fishman Mini Loudbox, WOW.I do like the neck of my Epiphone Mastercraft a little better than the FGX5. Probably b/c I have bigger hands. Other than that, what a sweet, beautiful, superb sounding, masterly built guitar.Oh, and the hard case it comes with is just as good. I really think you will be hard pressed to find something of this quality, both guitar & case, at this price point.

The guitar you've been waiting for
27 July 2019

The pickup system has far surpassed my expectations. The plugged in tone is amazing! Whether on the the piezo pickup alone or blending in all the mic, the plugged in tone sounds great. The acoustic tone is exactly what you would expect a 30+ year old (even though it's not) mahogany b/s dreadnaught to sound like. Rich bass, prominent midrange and trebles that cut through the mix. Fit and feel is terrific. The matte finish feels real nice. For those looking for a cosmetically flawless piece, the hand crafted aspect of this will leave you finding a few marks on the neck where last second refinements were made, but these are surely not blemishes in the product. I truly appreciate the finer details such as the ebony bridge pins and the saddle bone and nut. I had owned an ... MoreThe pickup system has far surpassed my expectations. I had owned an A5R and find this model to sound superior plugged in and the ebony pins and bone nut and saddle were a nice upgrade that I didn't have to do. Buy one. I bet you will not be disappointed.

This Guitar is just fabulous
14 January 2023

I own some acoustic guitars (Martin CEO 9, Martin OOO28, Gibson SJ 200, two fabulous Eastman guitars etc) but this one is absolutely stunning. It's so incredibly well made and sounds so balanced and warm. I play it everyday and played gigs with no issues at all. I was in the market for a Martin D18 but started to compare the sound and I couldn't see why I would pay the double of the price. The pick-up is really very good. I will never sell this baby in my lifetime :-)

Very High End Construction

I use this for recording, jamming, etc. It outperfoms my Gibson Hummingbird and is equal to My Martin HD28, 000 15M and my Yamaha AC5R. Very good price point for the quality.

WOW!
19 April 2023

All I can say about this guitar is.......WOW! I absolutely love this guitar. Who would ever have thought a Yamaha guitar would become my number 1 guitar. I'll admit, I was hesitant at first. I listened to all the YouTube reviews I could find, and listened, and listened, and then listened some more. I really hesitated buying this unseen and unplayed, but after hours of research, I finally pulled the trigger.......and then immediately was wishing I hadn't, but let things run the course, and I have been smiling ever since. The more I play it, the more I love it. (and I play probably 15-20 hours per week at jams, practice, and country band performances). My 2 Martins (000-RS1 and GPCPA4 Rosewood) are now my backup guitars. At 71 years of age, this is as good as it's ... MoreAll I can say about this guitar is.......WOW! I absolutely love this guitar. My 2 Martins (000-RS1 and GPCPA4 Rosewood) are now my backup guitars. At 71 years of age, this is as good as it's ever going to get for me. Are there better sounding guitars out there? Maybe, but at 3-4 times the price, and even then it would be marginal and questionable. And the quality of materials and workmanship? Second to none. (Remember, the 5s are all made in Japan). Spruce, Mahogany, Ebony, Bone, it's all top notch. And I'm loving the Atmosfeel electronics. What you hear coming from the guitar is what you get out of the amp or PA system (and that's what it's all about). If I have any complaint whatsoever (and it is very, very minor), it is that the system uses 2 AA batteries. Therefore, they don't last as long as a 9V. However, you get a blinking red light on the volume knob that warns you when your battery power is getting low, and that red light tells you that you have 2 hours left, so all is good. With inflation still running rampant, and guitar prices going up as well, don't hesitate. Get yours ASAP.

Worth the wait
3 September 2020

I reserved one of these in April and it just got delivered this week. It is truly a fantastic instrument. I've owned a few HD-28V's, other Martins, and a few Yamahas. This is the first Yamaha that feels and looks like it belongs in the same class as my better Martins. It has a very full and warm sound with plenty of volume. You won't regret this one!
