These studio monitors have the iconic white woofers that other high-end Yamaha speakers are known for. They sound terrific and have larger speakers for that rich bass sound. These speakers are excellent and as far as my mixes sound flat with no distortion. They give me a true sound and they are my main monitors that I use for mixing because they give me an accurate representation of the low end that smaller monitors don't give me. When I play the mix in my car it sounds exactly like it sounds coming out of the monitor. Great job Yamaha! Thank you for making them easy to pay for American Musical!

As a producer of 20+ years, hiphop/rnb, the yamaha hs8s are amazing. I look for great highs, mids and solid lows and these live up to its name. Accuracy As a sound designer, the clarity reaponse is so clear, it picks up sound id usually not hear with other speakers, I am able to create big sound such as realistic strings that sounds huge. Tweaking sounds is what I love, so tweaking frequencies with bass or 808s so they will not clash with other low end sounds, these speakers are perfect for that. Lots of producers have this issue, I highly recommend for aound clarity. Perfect responses. The bass and kicks are so tight, id leave a beat I am creating on loop for hours because I be amazed on the clarity. Overall Highs, Mids, Lows are what my ears judge when it comes to speakers and Yamaha did a great job, id give this 10 stars. So if you take your sound serious like I do, get the yamaha hs8s, you will not be disappointed.

Matched with the HS8's, all three 8's banged. Tried two other subs (Adam 10 and some other popular brand, can't remember), and they both were distorted at lower volumes, as well as muddier. For reference I have a properly sound treated studio area, and years of experience. If you pair these with Yamaha 5 or 7's, or preferably the 8's, you're going to be happy. Also make sure to buy some quality cables, but I'm sure you already knew that. I've gone through a handful of monitors and subs, and I can say that most subs don't usually sound this accurate or handle a load like this one can. I'm extremely happy I made the purchase!

I purchase my Yamaha HS8 for my recording studio and I must say, the speakers are one of the best speakers I have ever owned. The sound is not tainted, it has neutral sound coloration, which is exactly what I need. With the speakers I get the best mix I can crank up my monitors high with no distortion. It’s integrated control function give me a wide frequency response, It helps me move between high and low and frequencies perfectly. One of the greatest investments of my life. I’m happy I made it.

Ok so I auditioned the 6 different monitors, under 1k and 2 over 1k. The Yamaha HS8 were the best by far of all under 1k, including the Jbl 308 and the Krk rocket 8. I also tried the entry level Adams’s and liked these a lot more.as far as over over 1k in cost, I like the alpha 80’s (focal) more, especially in the mid range area, however they are 1100 dollars and slightly over what I was willing to spend. For the money there is no studio monitor, close to these period. I use these for gaming, movies and tv, but I also listen to a lot of music in hi-res. From the tv I use The optical out cable, to a small 30$ dac and presto I have full perfect sound. Couldn’t be happier with output and the quality of sound. Don’t need a sub with these unless you are a movie buff or spend a lot of time mixing. ( allows for better separation. They are lively, even at low volumes and eliminate the issue of not hearing voices and having to crank them up. I keep these around volume 2 and it’s plenty to fill a 25x20 living room. I do help mix some and I use these to determine if the quality of the mix. It has made a huge difference in finished products as I am able to hear detailed information, and clean up muddy sounding recordings. In response the the person who keeps posting buy the Yamaha NS-6490, please stop. You are truly an idiot , and misleading people. I bought these and tried them and they are clean, loud, and very large speakers. They are actually about 1/2 larger than the HS8.they are also passive and not powered. They don’t sound half as good as the HS8’s, and they need at least 75 watts to get them going. They still only produce about half the sound of the HS8, but would make a great set of theater speakers with a high powered receiver. best speaker non-powered under 150$

I must say! Yamaha without a doubt produces the flattest sound Within and beyond it’s price range, and adding this sub, is mandatory, why? Because it gives you access to taking the bass as high or low as you desire, and measuring exactly how and what frequencies you want to come through your lower speakers. I tell you, my bass is so friggin clean and crisp, I feel if vibrate to my souls core and I throw in some compression on my mix and oh my god I quiver and shake with excitement hearing how incredible this bass sounds. It is very clean without any muddy reverb at all. It seems to be very fresh and deep, rich and airy at the same time it’s classic and modern right where I need it to feel for new sound to be created without loosing site of direction and feel. Dont buy this sub if you need to ref 808's or heavy bass
7 July 2020

I deal in bass heavy music with 808's. By the time you cut this sub up to 12oclock on the volume its past breaking up and cracking in sound. The first time I heard it cracking I thought I blowed my speaker. I went and paid for another speaker and installed it and same thing happened. I went back to store and played the same mix on the sub in the store and the same thing happened. I have ruled this sub is not designed for bass heavy music and should take off the the spec sheet that is replicates frequencies at down to 20hz. It cracks at low frequencies and is annoying. I feel ripped off. The matching HS8's I have sound great although people talk down on them

Sounds amazing and as part of the studio monitor setup does the job very well. Price is also reasonable. The HS series is much too powerful for a home studio use though. I'm getting up to 20% and it's very loud. 50% volume and I can only hear painful noise. I guess my head would pop if I went 100%.

Perfect Match - fills in the missing bass!
8 November 2015

I bought the 2 high frequency monitors first. To me something was missing. Things to consider: 1. The sub woofer reproduces 20 to 140 Hz reasonably flatly. So what lives there - 20 Hz to 40 Hz one octave, 40 Hz to 80 Hz second octave, 80 Hz to 160 Hz third octave - most instruments only cover 3 octaves. Meaning the bass was mostly missing. Additionally a lot of other real instruments which are not bass note front ends include a component in this range, color. 2. When a speaker cone has low frequency waves it must move great distances to couple with the air to reproduce. If higher frequencies share this cone they suffer doppler shifting ( like a car passing) this causes a warble making for muddy sounds. 3. The low frequency waves are very long, 50 feet plus, coupling to air with this small of a speaker is a trick, notice the speaker works against the floor this changes the coupling and strips any remaining high frequency off. 4. All factory balanced crossover filters are in this subwoofer. 5. Even at low volume the sound is tight and full bodied - I believe all systems should include a frequency balanced sub woofer, but then I am an engineer. 6. If a demo system adds a subwoofer without a crossover in place, don't expect that the sound is representative of a proper system as it will be heavily colored by doppler shifting and be funny sounding.
