We love our new Yamaha receiver, but the set-up had a few unexpected turns. My 93 year old tech savvy mother loves music. She also is sight impaired (AMD). Her very nice, but 35 year old receiver (and as it turned out the speakers) started deteriorating. We were only interested in Audio, not Video. In reviewing the options, we had to decide whether to just replace what she had or move into modern technology. We decided to go modern. The first step was to get the old audio inputs working. No problem with the CD player, but the turntable required a pre-amp. We ordered the PylePro PP444 Ultra Compact Phone Turntable Preamp for $16. It did the trick. The tape deck connected just fine. The AM/FM radio worked but we don't have much available in our far Northern rural community. Hence the internet was a must have. That is where my problem started. I could not connect to my wireless router because I could not enter the wireless password on the receiver. Although we were not interested in a video connection to our LCD TV (again a very good TV, but 10 years old), I had to connect the receivers HDMI AV output to the only HDMI input on the TV. This meant temporarily disconnecting our TV satellite cable connection. As soon as the wifi connected, we had all the modern options available. To avoid conflicts, she uses Airplay to control the receiver (using Yamaha AV Controller App) from her iPad and I use Bluetooth from my iPad. She uses her iPad to turn the receiver on, adjust the volume, play her iPad music, Pandora, TuneIn radio and iHeart radio (for her favorite talk shows). I connected to my music on my laptop, but could not connect to her Desktop computer. I'm assuming it's because she is still on XP (for sight reasons). The sound is fabulous and it is very easy to control. A very impressive system. She listens to it every day. I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't had problems with the wireless password set-up and certain sound controls not readily available now because the receiver only connects via the HDMI cable and we can't dedicate that line to the receiver. All in all, we're very happy with this receiver (and the Boston Acoustic CS260 floor standing speakers). I also posted this review on Amazon.

After much research I purchased this receiver because it appeared to be the top choice for 2015-2016 in my price range. For the most part my research has been validated. The sound calibration mic is a real plus and it works wonderfully to establish sound settings for your listening area. The remote is light weight, well laid out and easy to use. I like having the ability to connect to my network via ethernet. The way around this is to change the sound setting to 'mono movie'. Not a big deal, but there does not appear to be a way to get this to happen automatically. I just want to pop a DVD or blu-ray in a player and hit 'play'. My old receiver would do this automatically. Anyway, if I could get that to work this review would change to 5 star. For most people, especially those concerned with connectivity, this RX-V479 is head and shoulders the best in it's price range if you can still find one.

I've owned Yamaha receivers for the better part of 15 years, and I've been happy with all of them except my previous model, which was a Chinese-made RX-V373. I had issues with HDMI handshakes, and audio quality. That said, the RX-V479 and models above are made in Malaysia which have the famous reliability that Yamaha is known for. I tried out the Pioneer VSX-45, but as I stated in that review, that mangled the video signal from all of my devices. Onto the RX-V479. I'm extremely impressed with the feature set for this price point. The audio quality is outstanding! The bass is much more precise from this on my Paradigm Monitor 7 speakers. I'm extremely impressed with the feature set for this price point. The audio quality is outstanding! The bass is much more precise from this on my Paradigm Monitor 7 speakers. The one thing that I really like about all Yamaha receivers now, is that the inputs are not labeled for anything specific, making connections much easier. The biggest surprise (maybe a minor detail for others) is that when you connect an HDMI device, and power it up, the RX-V479 automatically grabs the device ID and labels the input accordingly. That saves a lot of time and confusion in trying to connect equipment. This is the first receiver I've owned that does this, so kudos to Yamaha.Beware of the power rating that is listed on this and other retailers sites. The real power number you should be looking at is that this is really rated at 80 watts, with 0.08% TDH on 2 channels, 20Hz-20kHz. This is easily found on the manufacturer's website. This is plenty of power if you have good, efficient speakers. The AirPlay, and MusicCast system work wonderfully. I've never had to reset my receiver to get them to work as I've seen with models for other manufacturers. If you need Dolby Atmos, or DTS:X, look at the Aventege, or higher-end RX-V models, otherwise this 5.1 receiver is a outstanding value. You can't go wrong.
I had a chance to compare Yamaha RX-V479, Pioneer VSX-90, and Onkyo TX-NR646. I ended up getting Pioneer as it produced the best sound. Yamaha's shortcomings were as follows: 1) cannot set equalizer separately for different speakers...one EQ setting applies to all speakers (most receivers will allow at least center versus L/R channels to be different as dialogue requires different frequency than music and such that goes to L/R. 2) surround speakers weak...produces much lower quality "placement" of sounds compared with Pioneer (Pioneer was truly seamless adding a lot of realism). 3) Remote only has 4 inputs, so if you have more than 4 components, it will be a pain to switch to the 5th input. On the positive side, each input on the Yamaha saves its own settings (DSP mode, audio settings, etc.) so you can tweak the sound by input. Other than that, sound was average and had decent power but nothing exceptional. Pioneer was truly exceptional in this way and is why I went with it...found open box on sale for less than this model was new, making it pretty affordable.
I finally decided to replace my ancient Pioneer Elite VSX-21 (like I said, ancient) and chose this one. My primary concern was the ability to connect my consoles and other devices with minimum fuss, and since everything is HDMI, this had enough inputs to get me going. (6 HDMI)I have several gaming rigs hooked up (Xbox 360, Xbox1, PS3, Wii U) as well as an Apple TV to stream my hard drive content from my mac and my cable box. This takes up all 6 HDMI inputs, but that's all I need for now. I have a smart TV and if I just want to watch Netflix, I can do that and send the audio signal to the receiver via optical cable so I don't need to turn on any other peripherals which is nice. There is room for some customization with this thing which is useful. After I hooked up my consoles, I noticed that the receiver recognized them and labeled them accordingly (the display on the receiver showed Xbox1, PS3 etc. without having to do anything.) The Apple TV gave me some weird designation, but you can customize the labels as needed, so now it reads "Apple TV" when it is selected. This can be done with any input as needed. There are numerous surround sound effects to choose from, and you can increase/decrease the volume of any speaker you have hooked up. Sound control was a must for me, and is present as you would expect. Finally, the remote is great. Compared to my old Pioneer remote, this thing is plain and simple. Nearly everything is on-screen, but the main buttons are for toggling Volume, Input Select, and sound effects. It is light and looks and weighs about the same as a normal TV remote. Nothing confusing here. It is important to note that the instruction manual is on an included disk. Plug it into your computer and you can look up anything you want. Once I got everything hooked up though, I haven't needed to use it. All of the on screen menus are intuitive and easy to manage. This is a great receiver for anyone that needs to hook up 6 inputs or less and expects clean sound and wants something easy to operate. I have only touched on the features that I have used. The other capabilities, which are many, I haven't mentioned for that reason.Even for the limited use I am expecting of it, it has met all of my expectations and I think it will meet or exceed yours.
I had had a Nikko receiver since the 80's (Yup!!!) that was on its last leg--I so loved it! I did not want to give up listening to all my CDs and depend on converting and adding all the mp3's to my tablet. So I looked at many options. And I feel the sound from CDs is just better. So I started looking at receivers--Onyko, Denon, you name it. I compared the other brands in-store and online and felt Yamaha was tops. I also debated whether I needed Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. This one was right on target and the price was right. I like this receiver! Set-up was a little confusing at first as I am not a super techie; in retrospect, it's very straightforward. I use the Bluetooth for my tablet and had no trouble connecting to my laptop as well. I think my Nikko probably had more power, but the Yamaha is fantastic! Sound and video are great...The only minor bummer is now wanting a universal remote...I also purchased two great Bowers and Wilkins speakers to replace my oh so old Polks. (Wish I still had my turntable and dual cassette player, sigh..) I am happy!!!!!
recently purchased some new speakers for the house (energy rc-lcr for both front as well as center channel), speakers were being powered by an old optimus amp receiver and we noticed that the voices during television were a bit muffled. we also were missing some of the new features such as Bluetooth. started receiver shopping and found the Yamaha rx-v479 highly reviewed on a number of sites. Following purchase found feature after feature which we loved, particularly the airplay (better than bluetooth!) and the autoswitch feature which was a pleasant surprise as it was not mentioned anywhere that I had read. The sound quality is amazing, crisp and crystal clear and drives the speakers very well even at reasonably high volumes. Overall this has been an amazing upgrade for our home, highly recommended and very feature rich for the price!
I'm a huge fan of this receiver. It has enough power for my klispch speakers and you can make the whole room rumble without a problem! I also think it's pretty cool how you can play spotify directly to this unit even if you're not on the same wifi network (could be some security concerns with that). the reason why i'm not giving this 5 star rating is actually part of the spotify feature. I had a friend over and i told them they could play their spotify directly to the AV unit. unfortunately, that AV unit was now tied to their account. So randomly at night i would hear some music playing and the volume go super loud. Thats because my friend had my AV unit select instead of their device. It took me a while to figure out what was going on and the only way to resolve it is to factory reset the AV unit. Thats bit of a flaw if you ask me. So from now on, only I play spotify on the unit. Some other things to look out for is with the mic to configure settings on this unit. it will play test sounds and make adjustments to the speaker volume in relation to where you sit. The only problem is my speakers are so big, the system though i didn't need to use the sub-woofer so i had to make sure i selected the L+R speakers to be small instead of large. This way it uses the sub-woofer for the low end instead of the tower speakers.
I've had this receiver for about a month now and its really nice. One problem I had was my speakers were too weak. During some songs the receiver would completely turn off and then when i turned it back on i would get "Check sp wire". Come to find out it requires 6 or 8 ohm speakers and these were 3 ohms. Do NOT do what i did, you could ruin your receiver. The set up is really quick and the calibration mic works really quickly to configure all your settings for you. there are further tweeks that can be done as well. The app is really nice to use for switching between inputs and can also work as a remote when your couch eats yours. The ability to turn the receiver on and off from anywhere in the house (must be connected to home network) is pretty sweet. I do wish it had a component input (at least one) and also a bit more functionality to configure individual speakers. One last thing is the thumb screws on the back for the speaker wires are a bit tough to get wires in and feel a bit cheap. I recommend getting banana plugs to make wire setup go quicker.
