This kit is great. My kid loves it and so do I. Solid kit with great sound. Sure, you can replace the heads and spruce it up a bit, but you can't beat the quality and price unless you find one used or on a special discount. It used to be $699 a year ago, but for that you can blame inflation.

I have been playing drums on/off for about 25 years. I have had two pearl drum kits, and now this one.The sound is great. I replaced the resonant and batter heads almost immediately, the heads that came with the set were just really cheap. I have Evans coated 2-ply heads on batter side, and 2 ply clear on reso side.I didn't replace the kick drum heads yet. They sound ok. I have a pillow in the kick drum, and it sounds really great! The finish is really nice. They sound great, and I really love the snare, but I've never shelled out lots of coin for an expensive snare, so.....The only thing I don't like is they're kind of tough to tune, and they don't stay in tune that long.... I've been playing drums for a few years now and wanted something with better tone and better tuning range than my all poplar Pearl Roadshow I started on.My local GC suggested this kit, as it's made out of birch instead of poplar, but still within my price range.Wow! I think my band will love the look of this kit and more importantly, I love the sound of it myself. I was very impressed with how smooth the lugs were, how nice the build quality seems to be, and how easily they tune.I'm sure it's no DW kit, but in the price range I could afford, this thing is awesome! Also a bonus, I was able to trade in my Pearl towards this kit and receive 10% off. Thanks again!

Very happy with the Stage Custom drum shells, nothing but praise. Starting with the finish (Natural Wood - subtle, slightly yellow glossy lacquer), to the very good quality hardware on the shells and most important with the sound (defined, resonant, good separation of tone between toms). A bit surprised with the long bass note of the kick drum, as I wasn't used to unported bass drums so far. At times it sounds as singing along with the bass guitar. The batter drum head is now an Evans EMAD coated fitted with the thinner foam ring and the resonator was left the original with Yamaha logo. The toms were fitted from start with Remo Ambassador coated (10 mil), while the snare remained with the original Remo UT coated head, as it seems to be identical with Ambassador ... MoreVery happy with the Stage Custom drum shells, nothing but praise. The batter drum head is now an Evans EMAD coated fitted with the thinner foam ring and the resonator was left the original with Yamaha logo. The toms were fitted from start with Remo Ambassador coated (10 mil), while the snare remained with the original Remo UT coated head, as it seems to be identical with Ambassador coated on the toms. The coating on the snare shows already signs of fine chipping after only 2 days, despite the very soft touch and brand new sticks. The coating on the toms looks a bit better, but shows signs of usage too. My previous experience was with Aquarian single ply coated (the same 10 mil), which seems to be more durable after 2 years of service.Useful sound from the snare drum, less ringing than what I assumed it will have. The snare tension mechanism is a bit stiff, but usable. The snare wires are sensitive enough. Very good finish of the hoops and other chromed parts, as well as the lacquer on birch plywood.Very happy with the careful packaging of the drums, everything was intact despite some piercing of the cardboard box during shipping. This is where the happy part ends. Now to the part that most likely will be deleted by the reviewers of this review:That leads me to the less than happy subjects: the communication with Musicstore was a complete mess (let's blame the close to Easter moment!) and the service of UPS (at least here in Romania) is truly bad with the only phone call would be "I'm at your street but I don't have your address number exactly". No previous SMS in the morning of the delivery day, no phone call and no driver phone number available. You have to lose an entire day to make sure you will be at the proper moment in the right place.
Longtime player, very impressed with the quality. All top notch. Was worried that the 20 might not sound big/full enough, but found the bass drum to be very big sounding with a broad tuning range. In fact the entire drum set can be tuned easily to suit music style. I did not use the stock top heads, kept the resonant bottom heads on all drums. The snare was a complete surprise, it sounds fantastic! Used and Evans HD dry top head, stock bottom, and PureSound 24 brass wires, amazing sound. Hard to believe the quality at this price point.
I really never had played on a drum before, but I really wanted to start playing on one. So after a drumconcert I started searching in different stores online and reading different articles about drum until I had to choose one. So I chose this one. I received it very quick and with a little help from a friend, I was able to put all the parts together. Now after some weeks, I can't live without it anymore. I like to come home after work and run upstairs to play on the drums.I really like the sound of it and the look. Due to the real wood, it even sounds more natural than other drums. For a first drum, it maybe was a little expensive, but I like good material for a normal price instead of something bad.I can only say to everyone that you really need to prepare ... MoreI really never had played on a drum before, but I really wanted to start playing on one. I have been playing drums for over 40 years in many types of venues from Concert (symphonic) to live performance (Jazz, Country, Rock, Blues, Big Band)I have owned many types of drums over the years (Ludwig, Mapex, Pearl , Newport, Sonor, Yamaha), these were not the low end kits mind you but the better end of the manufacturers kits. I find my current Yamaha stage custom birch to be far superior to my old Ludwig Pro Beats of the 1970s. I like my Sonor Force 2007, however the Yamaha Stage Custom Birch have a more tone independent sound, drum to drum.I have owned two sets of Yamaha stage custom drums, the initial 96 version and my current 2016 Birch version. I found both of them to be very durable drums when properly cared for. My first set was in great shape after 10-12 years of use, and is sill making music with its current owner. The hardware Yamaha uses is excellent and never chipped, faded, rusted or pitted over time. The finish of my older stage customs never faded and looked as good the day I sold them as it did he day I purchased them, even with continual gigging about town. The Bass drum hoops never cracked or showed signs of color fade. After 12 years of gigging about town they were still in great shape. My stage customs always held their tune even though In carted them about from gig to gig and to the studio. I'm no snowflake, when I mean these drums held up I mean they were in their cases in the back of the truck with the rest of the band gear. Loaded and unloaded and assembled and taken down with the rest of the bands gear (Of course I was my own roadie)The hardware (tom holders and the like) never failed or broke or rusted etc. They always worked and looked great, even though they experienced moving about during gigging. I have heard complaints of the tom balls failing but I never experienced this issue with my tom mounts. they worked as well 12 years later as they did on day one.My history with stage custom speaks for itself
Really like a 3.9 out of 5 assuming a 5 is a $3500 DW kit or a Recording Custom set. For the money, these are a 5. They look great, I mean for the money the finish is exceptional. I got the natural finish and it had me at 'hello' as they say. I replaced the tom heads with coated Evans heads and the Snare with a coated HD Dry by Evans. I've only had them a week so it's still early. I feel like the toms lose their tuning quickly and the snare has limited 'Sweet Spot'...I had to tune both the batter and reso heads up to about as high as they'd go to get the really wet, slappy sound out. Once I did, I was able to tune the batter head down a bit to find my favorite spot. I'd say, all in all, the snare is the most limited and I will replace it with a Ludwig Black Magic. ... MoreReally like a 3.9 out of 5 assuming a 5 is a $3500 DW kit or a Recording Custom set. I've never owned a birch kit before so I am still trying to find my favorite tuning but I do believe these drums sound great and they are well worth twice what I paid. I would highly recommend. Once I got the toms where I wanted them I was pretty amazed. The sizes I got with the kit were 20" kick, 10", 12" and 14" toms. I removed the 10" and have a traditional 4-piece setup. This suits my playing style better and I may remount the 10" and use a side-mount for the 12" to be a 'floor tom' style location with the 14" behind that, ala John Bonham without the gigantic sizes. I feel like the toms have a pretty versatile tuning range, with moongels for overtones, but they do have a pretty specific sweet spot.
As a total novice with acoustic drums, you'll have to take my review for what it is. This is my first kit, so I have very little point of reference. Bottom line is that I haven't found any drawbacks to this kit so far. It was easy enough to assemble that a first-timer could do it without breaking anything, losing any pieces, or having any pieces left over. The tom mounts are great, and provide a lot of adjustment to accommodate players of various heights. And most importantly for me, they record very well in my home studio. I've had to learn to tune drums (not easy for a beginner!), and to get everything positioned and adjusted for ease of use. Nothing about this kit has stood in my way or prevented me from doing exactly what I want in this regard. Nothing about this kit has stood in my way or prevented me from doing exactly what I want in this regard. Plus, the Yamaha name brand garners a lot of respect from me. This kit is no exception to my Yamaha fanhood. The smaller tom size makes them want to be tuned a little higher than a rock and roller would normally want, but I've found them to be accommodating to slightly lower tunings that fit into my rock mixes very well. And don't worry about the 20" kick one bit. Once I tuned it, put an Evans EQ pad inside, and ported the resonant head (for interior microphone placement), it really packs a punch despite its small size. I'm also very impressed with the snare. Once I got it tuned up properly, it sounds great. Lots of snap to it, and lots of tone from the resonant head and snare wires.
I am a professional, touring drummer and purchased this Yamaha kit to reduce the overall size and weight of the drums I was carrying. I'm extremely particular about the look, build quality, and overall sound of my drums. I have long time played Tama, Gretsch and Ludwig high-end kits. Here's my assessment. The Honey Amber finish is a brilliant, sharp, higher gloss lacquer that looks great compared to wrap and satin finishes. As weight and space were concerns for me, I purchased the Fusion 20" kick model. The 17" deep bass drum adds more "boom" than 14" deep base drums although it might be a factor when considering smaller stages. Like other reviewers, I immediately replaced the tom and bass drum batter heads with Remo pinstripes and an Aquarium Super Kick II. Like other reviewers, I immediately replaced the tom and bass drum batter heads with Remo pinstripes and an Aquarium Super Kick II. I left all the resonant heads and both heads on the snare. With this combination, I was able to get a huge, deep sound w/o having to go to the larger 22" setup. I also ported the bass drum resonant head as birch drums sound great under mics...no exception here. This kit is about 1/2 the weight of my other high end kits.I had no problems tuning these drums like some reported, but am still dialing in the 14" floor tom. I might have to replace the resonant head to get rid of some annoying overtones; I've had this problem with other higher priced kits. You can probably get by with the standard heads for a while but they do not yield the performance to which these drums are capable. This kit has some nice features they don't mention like the Yamaha badges that allow you to change out or delete a ride tom and an extra hole in the tom holder that allows mounting of an extra splash cymbal holder. For the money and number of drums provided, I would rate it above the Gretsch Catalina which I've previously owned. To make this great sounding kit even more mobile, consider Yamaha's lightweight, crosstown aluminum hardware pack and get them from the great folks at Sam Ash Music, Buffalo Grove, IL
