I have played many kits in this price bracket and find the Yamaha Stage Custom range the best of the bunch for my needs. I like the sound that birch delivers and the fusion sizes of the drums. I have changed the heads of the toms to coated ones but this is my personal choice and the heads that come with it are fine. I have cut a 4 inch porthole in the bass drum and with a small round cushion inserted get a good punchy sound with no overtones. The surf green colour looks very modern and is very attractive. My kit came with a hardware pack including snare drum stand, hi hat stand, bass drum pedal and 2 cymbal stands. All double braced and well made. Ordering was very easy, I chose the day and the kit arrived on time, within 24 hours, and was very well packed. First thing to say is the Yamaha Stage Custom "5pc shell pack" is awesome!! These shells hands down beat the Ludwig and CB700 kits I played as a kid back in the late 70's and 80's! Secondly credit must be given to GC - Johnny, Ivey and Sam of the Plano TX store are awesome. They answered my questions without hesitation and always helped me accomplish the short term goals to get this kit where it is today. GC management gets a huge thanks as well since there was a fair amount of equipment churn with this build. Sometimes they had to step in for approvals. Carol and Ted were the managers I worked with. 90% of the equipment listed below came from GC retail stores. A few items were done online via GC while the remaining 5% came from other retailers (solely based on product availability). It is important to note that until recently I had not touched a set of drums since the mid '80s! I wanted to go "middle of the road" to ensure what I was doing as a kid returned relatively easy - it did and I was hooked from that point forward which meant additional equipment and better cymbals. All of this took research (mainly videos from Google and reading product reviews). There is always trial and error pulling up the rear. 😊 Basically when all is said and done, the only extra stuff I will have are the original drum heads, the wing nuts off the cymbal stands and a Gibraltar accessory / tom mount. 😊 Pretty cool all in itself when you look at the evolution of this build. Remember this all started with a 5pc shell pack, the Yamaha 680W hardware kit and a Zildjian ZBT cymbal kit.

Using this in a small home studio, but would be great live too. Wasnt expecting the sound to be as great as it is, especially the kick. I've always used maple, for over 15 years. After a lot of research on Yamaha, I felt this was a good fit. It far exceeded my expectations!!

Happy with the product, "almost happy" with the service
23 April 2019

Very happy with the Stage Custom drum shells, nothing but praise. Starting with the finish (Natural Wood - subtle, slightly yellow glossy lacquer), to the very good quality hardware on the shells and most important with the sound (defined, resonant, good separation of tone between toms). A bit surprised with the long bass note of the kick drum, as I wasn't used to unported bass drums so far. At times it sounds as singing along with the bass guitar. The batter drum head is now an Evans EMAD coated fitted with the thinner foam ring and the resonator was left the original with Yamaha logo. The toms were fitted from start with Remo Ambassador coated (10 mil), while the snare remained with the original Remo UT coated head, as it seems to be identical with Ambassador ... MoreVery happy with the Stage Custom drum shells, nothing but praise. The toms were fitted from start with Remo Ambassador coated (10 mil), while the snare remained with the original Remo UT coated head, as it seems to be identical with Ambassador coated on the toms. The coating on the snare shows already signs of fine chipping after only 2 days, despite the very soft touch and brand new sticks. The coating on the toms looks a bit better, but shows signs of usage too. My previous experience was with Aquarian single ply coated (the same 10 mil), which seems to be more durable after 2 years of service.Useful sound from the snare drum, less ringing than what I assumed it will have. The snare tension mechanism is a bit stiff, but usable. The snare wires are sensitive enough. Very good finish of the hoops and other chromed parts, as well as the lacquer on birch plywood.Very happy with the careful packaging of the drums, everything was intact despite some piercing of the cardboard box during shipping. This is where the happy part ends. Now to the part that most likely will be deleted by the reviewers of this review:That leads me to the less than happy subjects: the communication with Musicstore was a complete mess (let's blame the close to Easter moment!) and the service of UPS (at least here in Romania) is truly bad with the only phone call would be "I'm at your street but I don't have your address number exactly". No previous SMS in the morning of the delivery day, no phone call and no driver phone number available. You have to lose an entire day to make sure you will be at the proper moment in the right place.

Inexpensive substitute for Recording Customs
30 March 2016

The first day the Stages Customs sounded okay. I thought things would get better but 24-hours later I couldn't get them sounding like Vinnie's on Zildjian Day in 1984 and was ready to ship them back. The third day I was in agony, full of buyer's remorse. I've owned new Ludwig, Gretsch, Mapex and DW drums before and know new kits need to be 'played in' before reaching their full sound potential. For almost three more weeks I beat the tar out of them, putting gel clings on the Pinstripes to reduce overtones, re-tuning them several times a day. Yesterday I tweaked the tuning once again, threw away the gel, and played a set full of toms singing so sweetly I thought I'd sat down at Steve Gadd's Recording Customs by mistake! Yesterday I tweaked the tuning once again, threw away the gel, and played a set full of toms singing so sweetly I thought I'd sat down at Steve Gadd's Recording Customs by mistake! My pier & beam practice space has a hardwood floor, 11-foot ceiling and could function as a 'live' studio room. The bass drum sounds like a rumble of thunder in there, the snare a pistol crack. Big airy Ringo-type tom fills resonate with an exhilarating clarity, like Bonzo smashing out of a demolished building. The latest Yamaha Stage Custom drums are Recording Customs in everything but name only. They have a tight studio sound, birch shells with Yamaha hardware, craftsmanship and quality. The differences are minimal: Stage Custom shells are a single ply thicker, have low mass lugs, different badges and colorful finishes not available in the newly relaunched Recording Custom line. 1.6 mm triple flange hoops come on the new RCs too. Stage Customs are made in China instead of Japan but I have no quality gripes; if the Stage Customs I got are second rate I'm more than happy to be stuck with them.Buying an additional 8 inch rack tom and a 14 inch floor tom turned a 5-piece shell pack into a dream kit. I'm happy---my neighbors might be another story. Oh well, that's the way the bass drum beater bounces!

I found both of them to be very durable drums when properly cared for. My first set was in great shape after 10-12 years of use, and is sill making music with its current owner. The hardware Yamaha uses is excellent and never chipped, faded, rusted or pitted over time. The finish of my older stage customs never faded and looked as good the day I sold them as it did he day I purchased them, even with continual gigging about town. The Bass drum hoops never cracked or showed signs of color fade. After 12 years of gigging about town they were still in great shape. My stage customs always held their tune even though In carted them about from gig to gig and to the studio. I'm no snowflake, when I mean these drums held up I mean they were in their cases in the back of the truck with the rest of the band gear. Loaded and unloaded and assembled and taken down with the rest of the bands gear (Of course I was my own roadie)The hardware (tom holders and the like) never failed or broke or rusted etc. They always worked and looked great, even though they experienced moving about during gigging. I have heard complaints of the tom balls failing but I never experienced this issue with my tom mounts. they worked as well 12 years later as they did on day one.My history with stage custom speaks for itself

The YSC drum kit is freakishly good. Birch shells sound great. Cranberry red lacquer finish is beautiful. Great hardware. The incredible sound that rivals much higher end drums. Stock heads are junk, but with good heads and tuning, they hold their own. So happy to have them!

I put a DW MAG throw off on it (sorry Yamaha) but I'm picky about snares. overall it's a masterpiece at this price. this is up there with the best sounding drum sets I've ever owned
