Zhongyi Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 Canon RF Hood III

Zhongyi Optics (ZY Optics) have released the new Mitakon Speedmaster 50mm f/0.95 version III for full frame Sony E, Nikon Z and Canon RF cameras. Offering a natural 50mm perspective along with an ultra-fast f/0.95 maximum aperture, the Mitakon 50mm f/0.95 is a compact prime characterized by its bright f/0.95 aperture to suit working in low-light conditions. It also affords a great degree of control over depth-of-field for isolating subjects from the background and producing selective focus effects. The new version III features a new optics design which offers a slightly more compact size and a better flare resistance. A carefully-designed 10 elements in 7 groups optics system with 1pc of HRI (High Refractive Index) and 5pcs of UD (Ultra-low dispersion) elements successfully minimizes the chromatic aberrations and delivers exceptional image quality. An eleven-blade diaphragm helps to produce a softly diffused out-of-focus rendering (bokeh). The enclosure of the lens is made of metal to strengthen its durability.

A beautiful image making tank

Cons: This lens is heavy and big. If you put it in your bag, you will notice the weight. Walking around with it on your camera strapped to your neck is not recommended.Maybe it's my copy, but the color cast from the lens is terrible. My images start off green and gray. They are ugly straight out of the camera.Nailing critical focus, forget it. That shallow depth of field is pretty much impossible to hit handheld. Without a tripod, it's a total guessing game of what will be in focus. Set your camera to burst mode and hope for one image to have what you want in focus.Pros: It makes everything beautiful. That bokeh is second to none. For the other limited options available, what this does for the price makes it well worth it despite all its issues. Your other ... MoreCons: This lens is heavy and big. Your other options for a full frame f0.95 EF lens are rare and expensive or produce a less sharp image overall. As difficult as this lens is to use, the images are just magic. I hope to use it for portraits more. The images are simply dreamy.

I was skeptical at first glance that a lens this fast could be this affordable and good. Pretty blown away so far. The lens is all metal and glass. So it’s nice and heavy and robust. Manually focusing on the EOS R is great and the images are very 3D. Excellent sharpness stopped down to f2. For a portrait photographer, this should be in everyone’s kit.

It is a very rare instance where I feel I got a better bargain photographically or otherwise. This lens is MUCH better than Ianticipated it would be.

Better than the cost!

This lens could cost twice as much and still be a good deal. Love the heft and feel of it mounted to my EOS R. Focus ring is butter, sharpness at f2 and above is stunning!

softer image than expected.
22 November 2020

No matter the focus the image is soft wide open.Much sharper at 1.8 and at that point I’d rather have autofocus and a native lens.
