I used this for my first snake 14 years ago and I keep coming back to it. While it is a bit dusty, and it's dry and will dehydrate a snake quickly if you're not on top of your water chores, it holds a burrow like nothing else and doesn't break down. It spot cleans easy, dries fast in case of spills and smells nice. It also seems cozy! It isn't appropriate for every species but most of the ones I like do excellently on this stuff. I see myself using it another 14 years easy!

All of my corn snakes LOVE this!

I love Zoo Med's Aspen Snake Bedding! My four corn snakes seem to love it as well. They enjoy burrowing and hiding in it. I love that people are surprised that I have reptiles and they don't notice a smell. Clean up is so easy with this snake aspen. I recently had three 24qt bags and still bought three more, of the same size, while they are on sale. I now have a good back up supply for my two 40g, one 20g and the 10g enclosures. I have tried other brands in the past but this last year found this and Chewy's deals and am happy to benefit, as well as my snakes :) For those wondering about the amount to use for your enclosure. It is up to you and your individual snakes. I personally like to provide at least two inches thick layers of substrate. I also provide two water ... MoreI love Zoo Med's Aspen Snake Bedding! Do not get aspen! There are better alternatives.

Aspen bedding is terrible it molds easily when wet which is not good for any reptile and certain snakes like ball pythons need a humid environment. If you have a snake I'd recommend either coconut fiber or cypress mulch but please for your snakes sake do not even consider aspen.

Great for Chinchilla bedding
21 February 2022

Not a reptile at all, I know! I use this on the bottom floor of my chinchilla’s cage to sop up his urine. It’s perfect because it’s very light and small shavings, not big chunks like I would probably use for an adult snake. It keeps the cage from needing to be cleaned every single day- instead, around 2 weeks is a good time to change it all out, and you can spot clean by grabbing up the wet spots and then replacing with more aspen shavings.I also dump all the used bedding into my compost pile! Which is perfect since both urine and herbivore droppings are great for compost hahaha.

Looser texture

Thought I would give this a go as its initially cheaper than the Chipsi Snake substrate. It has bigger shavings than Chipsi, and I've noticed that it doesnt need fluffing up as often because it stays loose for longer. It's sold by volume, not weight though, so I was surprised that the whole 4.4L bag was used up just to cover the small floor space, with none left for top ups. It is a good quality product but I'd have to buy a much bigger bag to work out if its better value over time.

Not Meant for Snakes
9 May 2023

Aspen is not meant for snakes. It can't retain moisture and it's too dusty. The dust can block the snakes heat sensors. Snakes need humidity to have a successful and safe shed. Aspen can also mold when there is moisture. Use coco-fiber and coconut husks but most importantly do research about your snake (their natural habitat/ necessary humidity levels/ etc.)

So far, so good
5 July 2020

Ordered 2 bags of this. Was getting tired of the coco fiber and coco husk stuff. I breed Ball Pythons, and keep them in rack tubs, have 24, so far. I can easily control humidity without having to mist or anything. So, as long as I can keep them from dumping their water bowls, I wont have a mold problem. But, as for defecation cleaning, it's good. I wear rubber gloves, just pick up the feces, or the area around the urine, and chunk it, and replace just what you threw out. So, it's some pretty good stuff, overall.

Wish I'd tried Aspen Snake Bedding years ago, love it!
31 May 2020

I love the Aspen Snake Bedding. I've always used sand for my Western Hognose, to create a desert landscape, but the Aspen is perfect. My snakes love it. They are a tunneling snake, and the Aspen holds up to tunneling, and keeps the tunnels intact. It looks tidy, and nice. Its very easy to clean. I wish I'd tried this years ago, and I am very happy to have found it now. Its a great substrate, light weight, and cost effective. I am, and my snakes are, very happy with the Aspen Snake Bedding.

Worth the price

I use this substrate for my king, ball python and children's python. I only recommend it for these pythons if you use a tub, which keeps the humidity up, while aspen can dry up a glass tank. I tried to substitute Kaytee small animal aspen for this but they smell so bad. This has very little odor, not flat like dried coco fiber so the snakes can burrow if they wish, which my CP does over using a hide. It also absorbs pee very well. One time my king tipped over some water from her bowl after getting too excited over her food. The aspen soaked it up so well that I only need to remove half the aspen. The rest was completely dry. For that same reason, as long as I air out the tubs and mix the aspen every other day, I don't need to change out the entire tub as much. All of my snakes were fed from rats to baby pinkie mice inside their tubs with no issues. They pooped just fine. Obviously use your own good judgment and try to clear the feeding area in the tub before giving the prey.

Although a ball python should have reasonably high humidity about 60% consistently, this product doesnt allow for it to really be wet without issues its not made for humid settings. With that said ive found away ar in und this as my ball python was used to this and will go off feed on anything else which ive tried it all. Anyway providing either a humid hide or doing what i do will suffice. I use aspen on his hot side (since putting the moist substrate on his hot side would dry out to quick anyway this method works great). I put forest floor on his cool side, which holds a good humidity throughout his enclosure about 55% which is good but i think hed rather higher as i occasionally get stuck sheds. I just soak him now a few times during his shed which has been working well for him.I never had an issue with mold. I also dont leave it in there for too long about a month n obv spot clean in between full cleanouts. This has kept my snake happy. My other snake n is very happy on just coco husk which is way easier to keep moist n doesnt seem to mold or smell mildewy is any way in between clean outs usually i get a solid 6 weeks before i feel the need to clean out n can prob go longer, but like a clean environment for my animal. He sheds perfectly each time. If ur ball python is good on forest floor or coco husk or u have a new animal put him on one of those 2 n u will be gtg, they r the prefered substrate imo.The picture is a display of his tub with the 2 diff substrates.
