Best substrate for holding humidity

Some of my snakes need a humid 'hide' to shed well, or just because they like it-this natural bark bedding does the job better than others I've tried & looks great. The chunky texture makes it easier for snakes to have traction, as opposed to the "brick-types" that you dissolve in water- those are messy, sometimes grow mold & offer no traction whatsoever. When your pet defecates, it also goes down into this substrate so your pet isn't sliding thru it, unlike the smooth textured coco fiber stuff; it's easy to spot-clean. The natural color of Reptibark is also very attractive. I will buy this again.

Thankfully I use paper towel substrate for all my snakes, because I bought this for the bottom of my iguana enclosure and was in utter disgust when I saw an orange mite crawling on him. Then I noticed they were in the bark... And then I noticed they were also crawling around in the brand new bag I just opened. I had bought two bags, so opened the second one and it was also full of these mites! Thank heavens I noticed the same day and immediately removed it and unfortunately had to throw out the two brand new bags I had just bought, which were given to me from Petco in this condition. 40 bucks down the drain and it also lead to me having to proactively treat every reptile in my house for mites (not fun!)If you buy this, please beware and thoroughly inspect the bag ... MoreThankfully I use paper towel substrate for all my snakes, because I bought this for the bottom of my iguana enclosure and was in utter disgust when I saw an orange mite crawling on him. I've been purchasing Zoo Med Repti-Bark for 7 years and my Greek tortoise Fred Alton loves it. I would not change the brand, because Fred is picky and he knows what he likes. If he's happy with it then I am happy with it. Again delivery was super duper speedy. My order was delivered to my door within less then 4 days. I am very pleased. Thank you for your GREAT service and products.

The beast!
23 November 2021

This product is by far the best because it is reusable and it is very easy to maintain also keeps humidity and moisture very good. I use this for my ball python and She loves it I hear most people saying be careful because your snake can swallow some pieces this can be true in some cases but when my snake is eating and swallows her food nothing goes inside her mouth. It’s always good to watch your snake eat and don’t take that long and if you are worried about your snake ingesting this just watch them eat their food So you can observe and keep an eye out other than that this is the best product out there on the market and it is very natural. I’ve been using this product for years And never had a problem.

[Rewarded Review] Great for our Box Turtle
24 April 2024

This bark has been the best option for our Box Turtle's home. She can easily navigate through it and it does not stick to her as some of the others had in the past. Holds moisture well and easy to dispose of when needed.

[Rewarded Review] Hides Poop Really Well
13 June 2024

I do like this. My iguana is oblivious to it, so she doesn't try to eat it. If she drops her greens barky stuff doesn't stick to it. It hides the poop really well. It is a little dusty, though.

good for aroids
20 September 2024

using this for prepping an aroid mix. pieces are not humongous, perfect size for increasing drainage/aeration w/out going too 'chunky'. better than the standard 'orchid bark' i've used previously to make my aroid soil mixes.

happy with Douglas fir bedding
23 November 2020

I have 2 ball pythons and 1 boa imperator , I have tried several types of bedding and really love this one, it smells really good and holds just the right amount of moisture without sticking to the rats. I read people's concerns about little white bugs . These are not the same bugs (mites ) reptiles have , those kind live on the reptile , wood mites are harmless to reptiles and are commonly seen when purchasing mulch Ect . If concerned you would want to get a heat treated substance or to heat treat it on the oven to kill any bugs .

washable and smells like a fresh forest
10 March 2019

I love this bark. I use it in all of my reptile tanks. I used it around the water bowls in my gecko tank and ringneck snake, garter snake and ball python tanks. It holds moisture pretty well, so adds humidity to your tank. I use it in place of the moss in my pythons tank because I don't like the strong smell of moss. This bark is washable which I love because it can reused indefinitely. I toss any really soiled bits in the compost bin and reuse the rest after a good soak and rinse. And, it smells SO good. Like a fresh forest after a rain. I wasn't expecting it to smell so wonderful. I like to feed my smaller snakes on top of the bark so the coco husk doesn't stick to their wet prey as they hate dirt covered worms etc. I get the small sized bag which lasts me a long ... MoreI love this bark.
