All its functions are at your fingertips, such as track marker, auto record, low cut filter, level and volume controls with on-board buttons No menus required. Intuitive controls make it easy to capture the audio you need with ease. But Zoom still provides the versatility you've come to expect. So you get total recording format flexibility from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/96 kHz WAV, or MP3 from 48 kbps to 320 kbps and enough tools onboard to make impeccable recordings. Everything you need to get started recording is included. Your H1 comes with an AA battery for 10 hours of operation and a 2 GB microSD card. In addition, an H1 accessory package (APH-1) is also available (see sku # H70260) with an array of accessories that make your recordings even more pristine and easier to capture. The sound quality of this new version of the recorder is quite good by itself, but I use it with separate Rode mics for video-with my Nikon DSLR and now my iPhone 15 Pro. Since changing to the iPhone 15, I bought it because of its easier usability, with especially the USB-C connection. I run the recordings through Acoustica Pro software and then add them to Logic Pro and, finally, Final Cut Pro. The recorder is really very good for its price range and usage.

I was very dissatisfied with the sound quality on my otherwise excellent bridge camera (don't want to bad mouth the brand when it's probably operator error). A small external mike and a separate quality directional AND a separate preamp just gave me fits while I tried to achieve some kind of audio clarity. I found that my desktop computer was degrading sound quality but I was having to work too hard to get something resembling decent sound. And I'm still not satisfied with that. Bought the Zoom H1 with the notion that it would be great to have such a portable, small device and when I plugged it into my camera, lo, it gave me clear audio without fiddling with levels and cables. It comes with instructions on downloading two free sound and music editing software ... MoreI was very dissatisfied with the sound quality on my otherwise excellent bridge camera (don't want to bad mouth the brand when it's probably operator error). You can get more by buying an upgrade. The other program I have no use for but it appears to be necessary for you to download the latest driver. It's a large program and I didn't feel like going to all that trouble just to check for a driver update. The H1 works fine as is so no thanks. Heck of a good value if you axe me.

Maybe I'm expecting to much from the Zoom 1H essential, but I've found the recordings it makes very quiet on play back on, for example, my PC, and noisy. If I make a comparative recording on my old iPhone 6s (so hardly state of the art), I get a much louder and clearer recording. Also there appears to be a bias in volume towards the right microphone. This waveform display nearly always shows higher amplitude for the right, even when the source of the noise is on the left. When I rotate the recorder so that the noise is on the opposite side, the right retains the higher amplitude.I've tried upgrading the firmware from 1.04 to 1.10. This does not help. This device is being returned.

I bought this item to record voice overs for my Youtube video's and it fits the bill perfectly. Included in the bundle was a useful 2gb micro SD card and downloadable software. I don't use the software as I already have audio editing software installed but the Wavelab bundle is not to be sniffed at if you don't have anything already as it is very comprehensive. An added bonus was the fact that it has a 1/4" mount so I can fit it to a tripod or my suspension mount to reduce vibration. The twin microphones give a good stero representation. It has the ability to set the recording level manually which is great but you would need the auto option if you were some distance from the source. Not really what the unit is designed for but it's great for close work of 3mtrs ... MoreI bought this item to record voice overs for my Youtube video's and it fits the bill perfectly. I did a casual funny mock interview with a friend using the onboard mics and it worked fine (hand holding it back and forth). I put it in front of my guitar amp and it records well, my solo jazz guitar study. At night, so not to disturb anyone I use the line out of my Blackstar fly 3 into the line in of the H1, monitoring with the headphones. Very happy with this, as I get the urge to try or study things at odd hours. I purchased the accessory kit, put the wind screen on it and just left it on, the USB adapter works great if you want to power it plugged into a wall socket, but it doesn't record when USB powered by my laptop, its just for downloading I think, unless I'm missing something as I haven't yet read any of the literature that came with it. But that's how easy it is to use. It's handy and small. I've read about the complaints that it's flimsy, but it's more than OK in my purview, just treat it gently. Buttons are small, you kind of have to punch them with your fingernails, that would be my main complaint as I have to look at it to punch efficiently, can't do it blind. I like that I don't have to dial through a hierarchy of menus, it's button oriented simple. A definite improvement in recording quality from my Olympus OMD video mics (though I've achieved decent quality by surrounding my camera with my Blackstar Fly 3 and 103 ext cab, getting a close-mic setup). But I'm glad not to have to use the camera and focus on audio. The tripod in the kit is the only thing thats a bit worthless (doesn't open-spread wide enough) but I already have a high quality Bogen version of it. You have to play with your input volume and headphone volumes and your amp, but once you get something that works, you don't need to touch it anymore and can focus on your daily guitar playing and study. Great for travelling I would think, lightweight and small. My next goal is to get a an audio interface to record direct into Audacity in the Linux environment.
This is my third Zoom H1 digital recorder. Love these little recorders. The other two are working just fine. I use them with G6, G7, and R600 cameras. They have been used as recorders and just as external microphones to the cameras. I like that these require only one AA battery and it lasts a long time 6-8 hours or more. The new H1 (H1N) uses two AAA batteries. I didn't want to carry around two sets of batteries despite the additional features the H1N has. I also have a Zoom H2 digital recorder that is working just fine. It is the H2, not the H2N. I like it because it has flat-facing microphones for pocket stealth use. I bought a third H1 to be used as a line input recorder when I have permission to record from a mixing board. It takes up very little space. I plan ... MoreThis is my third Zoom H1 digital recorder. It takes up very little space. I plan on constructing a 1:1 and 10:1 divider just in case the mixing board, or other sources, are too high in level. The third is also a backup just in case the other two H1's go bad. I use the H1 with a shock-mount when mounted to the camera. The H1 has a faster boot-up, compared to the H2. You can't go wrong with this little recorders. I haven't had any problems so far except when the batteries die, but then the recorders seem to shut down okay.
Unit appeared to have been previously opened. It had 2 sets of batteries in it, one was not standard. No English Operation Manual. Gain dial does not seem to work. Not sure this unit works correctly...Did not have an SD Card as advertised....did not have a driver disk, none of the driver updates worked online. I want to return this item and get one that was not recycled to the next costomer.
Zoom makes incredible recorders from simple on up to mini recording studios. The H1 is the simplest recorder but still has real quality sound. Any videographer who has been around awhile has one of these. Like spare batteries, don't go to a gig without it. Good for notes, interviews, background sounds, doubles as a shotgun mike in a pinch. Small enough to be used on your body with a lavaliere. Endless uses with great quality for the price. Highly recommended. And look into the H2 and H4 etc. Great quality at a good price.
I had been wanting an excuse to buy a Zoom recorder for a while - just to play around with and record my piano practice - and when my daughter needed to submit an audition recording for a band competition, I finally had my reason. I bought this because it was the only one in stock at the store - I had been debating between this one and the H2N. I know this gets used a lot by videographers who mount it to their cameras but I mainly wanted it for recording music practice sessions. The pros - it was easy to use. I took it out of the box and basically was recording things in minutes. Getting the recordings off was as easy as plugging the USB cable into the computer and the device appeared as a hard drive that I could transfer files from. I took it out of the box and basically was recording things in minutes. Getting the recordings off was as easy as plugging the USB cable into the computer and the device appeared as a hard drive that I could transfer files from. Sound quality was great - much better than what I could capture on my android phone and my daughter could get on her iphone. The cons - it does not stand up by itself and if you try to hold it, there's so much rustling from your hand touching it that it ruins the recording. So you have to mount it on a tripod - I used one we had for our camera. Once its on the tripod, you can't access the buttons on the bottom of the unit next to the tripod mount. And when even on the tripod, this thing was so sensitive that it picked up the noise of me pressing the record and stop buttons so I had to crop that out using audio software on my computer. I used the auto-gain feature and it was a bit flakey - it did not do a great job of keeping up with the dynamics of the music and I could definitely hear noticeable swings in the gain level...I would recommend setting the gain level yourself vs. using the auto feature. Also, for my purposes, I really missed having a remote, which is the main reason I am upgrading to the H2N. The best place in the room to capture my piano is on a tripod placed at about the middle of the open side of the grand piano. But from there, I can't reach the record/stop without getting up from the bench. I suppose I could have just recorded the entire session and chopped it up later on the computer but I was trying to avoid dealing with huge audio files so I wanted to record the songs individually (and delete the bad takes as I went). The H1 does not have any way to control it remotely so I had to keep getting up and sitting down and of course it captured all that noise of my walking around which then had to be edited out later. So I have returned this and am planning to get the H2N with the optional accessory pack that includes the remote. It's a bit more expensive but I think it will give me more versatility in the future -- the H2N can also record in surround so it is better for recording interviews or work meetings at a conference table. The H1 was fine and if you're just looking for an easy to use recorder that has good quality sound, I would recommend it. But to me, if I'm already spending $100, I'd rather spend a little more and have something that does everything I want.
I purchased this recorder after purchasing a GoPro Hero 5 session to record video wihen driving in a Polaris Slingshot. The audio in the GoPro is horrible, however recording the audio with this device works great. The record button on this device is large and easy to reach, even with gloves on. The audio is also very easy to sync with the GoPro video during post. The audio and GoPro sync well when the bit rate is set to constant, not dynamic.Best Buy really needs to sell the accessory kit for this recorder because when recording outside the wind sock is a necessity. When you are outside by default put it on. I also use the low cut filter switch on the back when outside.
