An exceptional guided camera. Being able to increase the gain up to 400 makes it possible to find faint stars on my celestron C8 with OAG, something almost impossible for a camera like the ASi 120mm. The size of the sensor, much larger than that of the 120mm, helps to have a greater field. For guiding with OAG it is a perfect camera.

The ASI174MM-Mini is great match with the Celestron off-axis guider's large prism. It is also more sensitive than the ASI120MM-Mini, so 'ya get more guide stars and fainter guide stars. My unit worked as-advertised right out of the box: PHD2 automatically interfaced with it at first light. Great unit!

I bought this camera specifically as a guider, but can see why it would also be a great standalone imager. Finding a reasonably-priced upgrade to my Lodestar has been tough, but the 174 did the trick! It has equal to or greater sensitivity and a far wider FOV than the Lodestar, which is perfect for both guide scope or off-axis guiding. In PHD2, the picture is smooth and crisp with very low noise, and the ZWO ASI Camera driver (needed for operation) is solid. For the price point, I do not think anything else on the market can touch it.On the note of drivers, if your aim is to run this camera in concert with another ZWO camera using PHD2 and SGP, you'll need to use the native ASI camera driver for one and the ASI Camera ASCOM driver for the other in order for both ... MoreI bought this camera specifically as a guider, but can see why it would also be a great standalone imager. First night I had this camera out, I couldn't get the 174MM to work with the 1600MM Pro, but luckily had "Old Faithful" the Lodestar on hand and was able to salvage the night. Once I found out about having to use separate drivers, all has been well ever since. On the ZWO Downloads page, make sure to download both the native driver and the ASCOM camera driver. In PHD 2, select "ZWO ASI Camera" and in SGP select either "ASI Camera (1)" or "ASI Camera (2)" and all will be great, I feel that ZWO could be a little more clear on this in their manuals and downloads page(s). Our clear sky time is valuable and not everybody has a spare camera to pop in when things don't go the way they should.Despite the slight debacle with the drivers, I left this review at 5 stars because the camera's quality is superb. Lightweight but solid construction with a beautiful anodized finish. The C-type connection is new to me, but the connection is quite deliberate and also feels very solid. All said, I love this camera and Highpoint's service is second to none!

Great little Cam
2 May 2023

The camera has great sensitivity makes finding a guide stars easy. I paired this with my 60 and 70mm guide scopes and was amazed at how much more detail the camera was able to capture, in relation to my 120MM, stars were bright and pinpoint. Now time to test it with my RC6 and Celestron OAG.The only thing I noticed was the sensor is setup portrait and not landscape as all other ASI cameras in relation to the writing and USB port on the body. Maybe someone installed it wrong at the factory, however I just rotated the camera 90 degrees to make the sensor horizontal with the imaging camera sensor.

Ideal for Celestron OAG
24 September 2022

Paired it with EdgeHD 800 + 0.7 reducer + Celestron OAG. The reducer shrinks the imaging circle by quite a lot and obscures almost 3/4th area of the pick-off prism. But thanks to the large sensor and increased sensitivity of ASI174MM, I had no problem finding a guide star.As usual, Agena provided a great service. Te item was shipped on the same day and it arrived on time as per the estimated delivery.

Perfect camera with OAG and long focal length
14 July 2022

Even with the regular ZWO OAG and its somewhat skimpy prism, the ASI174 vastly improves finding and retaining guide stars at long focal lengths (eg. C8 with and and even without f6.3 focal reducer corrector). An OAG-L or a COAG would be an even better match for the ASI174, but it does greatly help the regular ZWO OAG. Large sensor, big pixels, good sensitivity: hard to beat.

Practically required for an SCT w/OAG
19 September 2020

Having guided with a cheap 60mm guide scope for years, and never having attained great results when using it with my 9.25" SCT, I finally got the Celestron off axis guider. I initially tried to reach focus, using the f/6.3 reducer and an ASI290MC for the guide cam. I could not reach focus. Classic. Having an ASIAir meant sticking with a ZWO camera regardless, and spending $300 to get a "mini" version of a camera I already owned seemed pointless. For $200 more, you get a sensor that is several times larger in a form factor that can focus in any OAG setup. You gotta pay to play, but my first light brought me the roundest stars I'd ever gotten - and with ten minute subs @ 1320mm focal length.

The Right Path
21 September 2022

I tried to use a ZWO planetary camera to do double duty as an off axis guider with no success. After much research I found that the ASI174MM Mini received the most recommendations. It has made all the difference. I add my recommendation to all the others. Using any guide scope on an eight inch SCG telescope is fraught with difficulties. However this camera in conjunction with the guiding software in the ASI Plus computer has managed to guide on misshapen, barely visible, tiny globs of light, to my total amazement, As a casual astrophotographer I find this camera all I need.

ZWO Off Axis Guider
24 September 2018

I bought this particular unit because I have ZWO cameras and my sales associate (Isaac) said that it’s a good idea to have an OAG from the same manufacturer as your camera because they will have addressed focusing issues and you won’t have to worry about extension tubes and all that for your off axis camera.I’ve used it once and it seems very solid. I also got the Baader Filter slider assembly and it fits together really well; feels very solid and it will be great to take photos with both the nebular filter and the H-beta filter by just sliding them in and out without having to disturb the setup. My only complaint is that the only way to achieve focus with the off axis camera is to pull it out or push it in with your fingers. This is simple enough to get close but it’s hard to get exactly right because touching the thing makes the scope shake so you can’t tell if you’ve made it better or worse until the shaking stops. I’m experimenting with a focusing mask now and when I’m sure I’ve got it I will mark the barrel of my guide cam so I know when it’s inserted to its focus point.

excellent customer service
21 June 2022

Agena is THE place for astro gear. Excellent customer service. They handled my return with no ruffles, and diagnosed a camera problem that ASI/ZWO couldnt. (ASI chased their tail for almost a month -had me up at 2am while a tech in China took over me computer -downloading drivers and installing/uninstalling Win upgrades. They finally gave up and said-"camera no work". Returned it to Scott at Agena... and he had it corrected and back to my within the week. These are my go-to guys from here on out.
