To preface this review, I want to say that I have had Arcteryx products over the past 20 years that have lasted until today. They used to provide great customer service and stood by their products quality. That is no longer the case.My recent experience buying their product was nothing like the past. The product quality and materials have clearly deteriorated (now made in Bangladesh, not US or Canada like past purchases) and they phrase their warranty to essentially make it meaningless (please read what is ācoveredā and the extensive exceptions before buying).I bought this jacket before an international trip about a year ago. Basically walking around and/or jogging in California. I noticed one day that the sleeves near the bottom had developed several rips (despite not encountering any sharp objects or abrasive materials). My only conclusion is that a bit of sweat and the act of walking caused the material to rip over timeā¦. I say over time but this is OVER 9 months!! What a joke for a jacket at this price point.Butā¦I had not given up on the brand yet. I had good experiences with them standing by their products in the past, so I reached out to support. Support was not helpful at all. They stated they do not repair rips (read the warranty) and sent me to a 3rd party repair service to PAY MORE MONEY on top of the price of a jacket that lasted only 9 months. Itās insane how useless this warranty is on a jacket this price. It essentially had a materials failure due to sweat from normal use (back to the deterioration in quality I mentioned earlier), and the āwarrantyā does not cover anything. So if you buy it, take notice of the extremely thin material. Definitely donāt use it in an outdoor/hiking/backpacking/skiiing/etc. (like the brand likes to advertise) because it is not a quality product that will last.

Nearly 5 stars but......This jacket has had it's cut/pattern changed to fit longer in the torso. If you're tall in the torso - great! This will serve you well and is truly a bomb proof and incredibly high performing and cosy jacket! I've owned one for 9 years and wore/loved it non stop until it's recent death.I purchased a new one but sadly most of us women aren't tall in the torso and the new fit just feels off and unflattering on me now. It sits tight on my hips and the extra few inches of length annoys and restricts my body. I miss the boxier cut that ended just below my hips as I could move more freely, plus I thought it looked much more flattering this length too! Very disappointed with my recent Arc'teryx purchase. I bought the Men's Atom hoody in a size small (I'm 5'7", 140 lbs) and it's disappointing compared to my Wife's Atom hoody from 5 years ago (named the Atom LT hoody at the time). I noticed instantly the material felt thinner and cheaper. The fit of the new Atom is also very boxy and I would not consider it "fitted" at all. I have an older Beta shell in size XS which I find can be tight in some spots so I ordered the Atom in size S, which turned out to be quite roomy. I definitely could have fit an XS and it still probably wouldn't be "fitted". The fit of Arc'teryx overall seems to have become boxier which is quite disappointing. Purchased in 2018, runs true to size. I am 5'7", broad shoulders (44" chest), and I wear a size L, which is comfortable. I love how lightweight it is, and typically wear this in the dead of midwest winters with a fleece midlayer, often in subfreezing temps. In temps below 20°, I might wear something more robust. But this jacket can hold its own. The side fabric is breathable, and the outer shell performs fairly well in wet weather. The hood is boxy, and when on, it looks sort of funny - not the most flattering. That's fine, because I wear this for it's performance. Cinch elastic helps with keeping the hood on, and the chest pocket is handy. My biggest gripe about the design of this jacket is the side pocket design. The zipper opens down to the base of the pocket. So ... MorePurchased in 2018, runs true to size. I am 5'7", broad shoulders (44" chest), and I wear a size L, which is comfortable. Cinch elastic helps with keeping the hood on, and the chest pocket is handy. My biggest gripe about the design of this jacket is the side pocket design. The zipper opens down to the base of the pocket. So there is no lip inside the pockets. As such, anytime I have an item in my pocket and I lean to either side, the contents of my pockets will fall out. This happens with regularity. I've dropped my keys, papers, lip balm, etc. Luckily, it's while I'm tooling around town. If I were wearing this on a precarious hike, I'd be afraid to drop something of value down a side of a cliff or off a rock into a river. This is a major flaw. As such, I tend to wear my other jackets when doing anything technical.
Great jacket for moderate to chilly temperatures. I bought this to be used as a stand alone as well as a mid layer for the colder outings. I've had the jacket about a month now and love it. The fitted fit is much nicer than some of the other boxier cuts and it's breathable. I've used it while hiking/walking as my outer shell in 19 degree weather with a thicker base layer and was fine. Jacket is lightweight, moves well with the body and is packable. I love the stretch cuffs making it easier to put on and take off over gloves. The hood also stays in place really well and doesn't hinder your vision or use of a headlamp. Haven't had it out in the rain yet to test the water durability. Overall, this is my go to jacket.
Last year I was interested in buying the Atom hoodie, but I ended up not getting it because it didnāt fit right when I tried it on in the store. I am not a ācurvyā woman, but the hip area was still way too tight. When I sized up, the top part was way too big. In addition to the cut, I found the coat proportions in general did not fit me. Nothing seemed to fall in the right place. I am 5 feet tall and the coat was cut to fit tall women. This could also be why the hip area didnāt fit - it was probably falling too low. Still, I think widening the hip area could help the coats fit better on a wider range of women. All of the Arcteryx coats that I tried on seemed to have this issue. It would really be nice to have petite sizing - but please donāt just shorten the coats ...Ā MoreLast year I was interested in buying the Atom hoodie, but I ended up not getting it because it didnāt fit right when I tried it on in the store. It would really be nice to have petite sizing - but please donāt just shorten the coats and think that will work - the length of the arm holes, sleeves, and torso need to be adjusted too. Ultimately I was really disappointed. The coat is attractive, well made and would have been perfect for my hiking trip, but it unfortunately didnāt fit right.
The usual superb quality arcteryx is known for - lightweight, breathable, JUST the right level of insulation jacket. With some notable improvements over the older version. Sleeves now have a new cuff around the wrist which is very good, logo is stitched on not printed, fleece material on the sides has more stretch making it a tighter fit then the previous iterations. Size wise itās less straight forward then before, I bought L (which I buy for all arcteryx products) but itās tighter then I expected; still fits well, but wearing a heavy sweater underneath is now less comfy. So why no 5 star? That would be the zipper, despite the fancy zipper pulls, the zipper appears to be of lesser quality then before not āzippingā up as smoothly, it feels like there is some ...Ā MoreThe usual superb quality arcteryx is known for - lightweight, breathable, JUST the right level of insulation jacket. Purchased this jacket for my husband last year, and he only wears it in the spring and fall, and it started pilling. Itās so disappointing after all of the Arcteryx jackets Iāve purchased, that it happened to this one and when we contacted customer service, they told us to just shave it ourselves. They said itās caused by washing the jacket (with proper Arcteryx instructions) and wear & tear - so anpparently pilling is normal for all of their jackets except their old jackets. After the in-store associate helped us shaved it, it was still very visible. What a shame that the quality of Arcteryx has gone down so much. There are other stores that have completely replaced jackets/clothing for us, no questions asked. I bought this jacket about two years ago and now I take it on almost every adventure I go on. Originally, I wanted this jacket to fill a gap between the light, barely even a shell, type jackets I had been using for Nordic ski training and the overly hot down puffers I used on cold days in the winter. This jacket passed my expectations and took over a lot of other use cases I never thought it would. Here are my favorite things about it:1. A convincing synthetic. I like having a synthetic jacket for most adventures so I can pack light and not be completely out of luck if I get caught in the rain or find another way to get the jacket wet.2. It still manages to be light enough that I have no problem backpacking, climbing, running, skiing, or doing anything else with ...Ā MoreI bought this jacket about two years ago and now I take it on almost every adventure I go on. It still manages to be light enough that I have no problem backpacking, climbing, running, skiing, or doing anything else with it. It doesn't pack down quite as small as some lighter down alternatives but 90% of the time it works for me. I'd say it will satisfy all but the most intense gram counters.3. My Atom is surprisingly warm. I expected to take a hit in thermal efficiency compared to my old down sweater but it is a lot better than I hoped. It isn't as warm as a down puffer of the same weight by any means but it can hold its own in some fairly cold weather. I'm bad at judging or remembering to record temperatures, but I'd say most people will find it a bit warmer than they think it'll be for a "LT" jacket.4. Really well built: A lot of my friends and athletes I know have told me that Arc has some of the best quality gear out there. I wasn't sure what the hype was about until I tired it myself, but I am impressed with this jacket. I haven't beat the life out of mine and I'm fairly hard on gear. Granted, I haven't climbed through any chimneys scraping my arms wall to wall or fallen off my bike into a sand pit wearing it but it has stood up well to regular back country use and daily use around town. It still looks almost brand new and it has seen a lot of action. The design details are also good. The fit of the jacket, hood, and pocket placement is spot on for me. I have never found anything about the jacket that has made me upset or wishing something could be changed. It has just always worked. However, there are still some things about this jacket to note:1. This jacket is still a halfway point thermally. It breathes ok for anaerobic workouts and it is an ok level of warmth when you're paused. For me this works because I do a lot of stop and go activities where having a jack of all trades master of none is my preferred option. If you expect to be pushing it all the way the whole time you work out (and you don't live somewhere where the high is 0 degrees C) or you are static the majority of the time this jacket might leave you an overheated or shivering mess.2. This is a hybrid jacket that puts some fleece panels on the sides. I actually didn't know this when I bought the jacket because my friend who recommended it to me had an older model without this feature. The fleece lets the jacket breath more but that can go both ways. If you are in a really windy or really cold environment this jacket can leak heat REALLY fast. I've had this happen to me a couple of times at static rests near the top of peaks when the tree line gives way and you get blasted by high speed winds. Wearing a hardshell over top can fix this, and the more breathable fleece actually makes this a very pleasant mid layer in my experience. However, if you want a jacket you can keep in your pack that can also work as an additional thermal layer to pull over your other layers (including your shell) you will probably be out of luck (I'd recommend a down layer with a more relaxed fit).Overall, I love this jacket and at its current price it is a really good value which is not something you can normally say about Arc products. I plan to keep on around for the foreseeable future.
The new Atom Hoody is great. Some of the changes are noticeable that I don't really care for. The string that was attached to the zipper pull for the jacket and pockets are now replaced with a hard-edged, solid vinyl/plastic-esque thing. Honestly, it's somewhat annoying since there's no softness or give and there's these parts of it that sticks out. So when the zipper is facing up (it happens, especially for pocket zippers when your hands are in them), they dig into your skin worse than a rough shirt tag on your side. I've been wearing my old one for years in all sorts of conditions and multiple washes, that string that this plastic replaced hasn't even frayed.Otherwise, everything else about this jacket: Build Quality, Comfort, Design, etc... is the best I've ...Ā MoreThe new Atom Hoody is great.
