Crankbrothers nailed this shoe! With a very close inspection out of the box, the QC is precise. The shoe fit true-to-size, and was as comfortable new as it was after many logged miles. The shoe has many elements you’d expect from a pro-level boot. The outsole and upper are tough, but hint of aerospace quality. The mouth of the footbed is clean and appropriately padded without looking and feeling like a 1990s skate shoe, the bane of most MTB shoes today. The speed-lace system was selected for a lower and more durable profile over BOA, and the decision was sound. The speed lace has almost the perfect friction to tighten without any hint of release when not actively pulling. You can achieve a dialed tension without the hassle of a traditional lace. The lace’s cinch takes two hands to tighten and one hand to release. This cinch too is exceptionally well engineered, as it holds fast until pinched, then it gives way so you can easily kick off the boots. Coupled with the forefoot Velcro strap, the foot is locked and loaded for all-day grinds. Very light weight, the shoe is stiff for the goat trails and planted on the descent. This shoe was used with the Mallet E 11, and clipped in and out in mud, loam, and even snow (with a little extra kick), the ultimate demonstration of a sound design for the real-world. The Mallet E Speed Lace is nearly the perfect shoe.

Excellent everyday shoe

For everyday riding & training these shoes are perfect. They are a bit heavy for racing but a solid cross training shoe.It took a few rides to break them in, until then I had a slight pain on the outside bottom of my feet. Took about 5 rides and that went away. The trails I typically ride are very rocky and in the first couple months have taken quite the beating. I'm very happy overall with the fit and how they are holding up.The waterproofing is also nice. I've used these mostly in the fall/winter thus far but see them being quite warm in the summer. I'll probably use an old religious pair (holy) if I'm doing anything then but that's mostly because my feet sweat more than most.

Great Shoe, Great Fit. Just Give Them a Try!

I have been wearing the Mallet E BOA and picked these up for a backup pair, plus wanted to test out the speed lace system. First off, crankbrother shoes are amazingly comfortable. Second, they just work so well on and off the bike. Third, they are durable! The speed lace works great and I love having a second option. I have over 3K miles on my Mallet E BOAs with a solid mix of back country, enduro and gravel. All other shoes have been sidelined, they just don't compete. Don't hesitate, just give them a try. One word of caution, I wear a 10.5, but need an 11 with Crankbrothers. Otherwise, they are perfect!

Great shoe but 1 small issue for big feet
20 August 2024

Mostly great but some(1) gripes. I really like the speed lace and velcro. They get nice and tight but with even pressure. After 3 months of riding they are holding up well even when paired with the grippy Mallet DH pedal. Which is also another bonus. The Match system is too easy. Now the bad-the heel. The heel has some rubber inside to keep the shoe planted and it does just that! But after just a couple times putting them on I ended up crushing the heel which is now out of shape and kind of uncomfortable. I use a shoe horn to get them on now and they slide right on. Great shoe but if you have big feet get a shoe horn don't crush that heel.

I’ve had multiple shoes from
7 July 2024

I’ve had multiple shoes from Five Ten and Ride Concepts, and these shoes are superior. The fit is great, especially the heel area that is slightly softer with a rubberized grip that is oddly effective. Very overall supportive feel that has a nice power transfer. The uppers are protective with side vent panels that ventilate well. Sole has a narrower profile than my RC Tallacs, but I was pleasantly surprised with the traction the sole provides on the trail. Lacing system is quick and easy and for someone who has a high instep, these are the easiest shoes to get into. Get a pair, they are great

Not durable
1 July 2024

Whilst this shoe looks good and feels comfortable it is not durable or strong enough to withstand the knocks and bumps associated with mountain biking. The first time my son wore them they split across the shoe upper after he had a minor fall. They have since developed other small cuts after only wearing a few times in the forest. Unfortunately, after contacting both Tredz and Crank brothers, this issue was not covered under warranty. In my opinion, they are not sturdy enough to withstand the rough and tumble of mountain biking especially considering the price.

Not sure about all the hype.
15 July 2024

Hate the heavy bulky feel of them. The platform is also not flat which makes them hard to clip. I feel super high up wearing these, like it’s leaning me forward too much. Also they are ridiculously hard to hike uphill in. You’d think with such a thick shoe the cleat wouldn’t stick out so much, but they make it really hard to walk in. Additionally the cleat tracks don’t go far enough back in my opinion. For this style of riding it’s better to have the pedal almost mid foot. These remind me more of a XC shoe except super bulky. Probably switching to chamber II’s hopefully they will feel better.

Sold me on going clipless
31 October 2022

I still may go with flats depending on the ride, but I've gone full-time (mostly) clipless because of these shoes. I could never get the right foot position and feel with other clipless shoes but the ability to slam the cleats back a little farther on these is all I needed. These put me the most confident descending position, and climbing too.I've paired these with long spindle Mallet-E pedals (with the pins run a little higher than how they ship) and the easy release, 6deg float cleats.I disagree on the size recommendation. I wear 11.5 shoes across the board (vans, nike) and the 11.5 in these is pretty spot on if not a touch on the small side. Not enough to size up.I swapped out the quick lace for traditional laces. I like to keep the forefoot area as loose and roomy as possible and that's harder to dial in with the quicklace or boa system since those are all about even tension/pressure.Flats are for sure more comfortable, but these are a close second when it comes to walking around.

These Mallet shoes fit like
29 April 2024

These Mallet shoes fit like a glove, I wear a size 10 normally and these were spot on. Great amount of support at the arch and protection around the toe box and heel. I was a little concerned with the weight at first but while riding that was the least of my concerns. Speed Lace is easy to use and the hidden pocket under the tongue is an added bonus. Clips come preinstalled so if you ordered Crankbrothers pedals already- you now have 2 sets, ftw. The Boa's were sold out and I took a chance on the Mallet's Speed Lace and no regrets. Great for hike-a bike's I would put them up there with (off the bike) 5:10 trail traction. I usually ride clips from shimano on my gravel bike and flats on my mountain bikes, this pair of shoes goes to a new downcountry bike, I found that ... MoreThese Mallet shoes fit like a glove, I wear a size 10 normally and these were spot on. Great shoes.

Two rides with these shoes
11 March 2024

Two rides with these shoes and I wish I'd pulled the trigger on buying them a long time ago! They interface perfectly with the Mallet DH pedals perfectly, out of the box. I'd been trying to make some RC clip shoes work with the CB pedals, but going to CB shoes was a night and day difference (makes sense I suppose). The shoes are extremely comfortable; snug around the foot, but a nice toebox with room to wiggle the toes. They clip in and out smoothly and mindlessly. The speed laces seem great. So far my favourite pair of MTB shoes to date.
