An Excellent Work Light!

I bought this light as an EDC/work light. I needed something small enough to carry all the time, rechargeable, bright enough to pre-flight dark engine decks, but with enough light levels to be able to lower the light for other tasks. The PD40R V3 replaced my PD36R (which moved over to night-time farm chores. It is only fractionally larger but packs a much larger punch in total output. It has an ARB-L21-5000 Rechargeable 5000mAh 21700 Battery, an additional 1500mAh more than the battery in my PD36R. The Rotary Switch is very robust. I've never had a problem with any of the side switches on my other Fenix flashlights. But this one promises to be even tougher. For the day to day (and night) operations I fly at work, it's an excellent light.

As far as production level flashlights go Fenix has always been amongst one of the better quality brands. Some of the high points of this light are the usual Fenix pros including but not limited to: Good/durable build quality, geared more towards the tactical crowd, simple/easy to learn & use interface -(tho, IMO the light would be MUCH better suited for average/edc use, not to mention safer, if the strobe function was "hidden" or at least not the very last setting so when in a hurry/pinch to get max light gross motor skills dictate the unlikelihood of being able to smoothly access the turbo output first try without passing over to strobe potentially causing a seizure or disorienting an allie), also the light has a decent reliable ipx rating, and as with many a ... MoreAs far as production level flashlights go Fenix has always been amongst one of the better quality brands. The biggest gripe I have with this light, and it's a pretty bad one depending on your standards, but this thing has got to have THE worst tint shift if any light I have owned/handled this far. I'm talking so bad it almost seems like it has a secondary green osram led for the lower couple modes. I mean it's so bad that I'd almost prefer PWM over the drastic, ugly tint shift that the otherwise solid tactical PD40R V2.0 unfortunately suffers from. The worst part about it is, it's not like the true cool white tint you see in the higher outputs is anything to drool over already so when that green splashes all over at night (even outside :-( ) it's especially upsetting. The one other gripe that really others will most likely see as a positive is the on board charging. And that's just a personal thing cuz I hate it and the possible engress point it creates but even still it's an acute gripe at best. Overall decent light, bright output, little overpriced -there are much better options in this price range and even size/form factor. Zebralight, thrunite, olight to name a few and the best value flashlights you can probably buy currently I'd have to say are sofirn flashlights, almost always having great flash sales and excellent products to boot with much more up to date emitters and UIs. Even from Fenix I feel there are better offerings and for slightly less $$ PD36r comes to mind. Over all I give this Fenix PD40R V2.0, 3.5 stars (if it were possible to give halves so I'll be generous and rate it 4)

The PD-40 is brighter and has a better beam than my TK-22 (that has the almost impossible to find mode button) thankfully the PD-40 eliminated the button. The GL19R is also a great light for my 9mm. Really bright with a nice flood.Thank you Fenix for being there for all these night piercing years.

Fantastic!
1 April 2024

As expected, this light delighted me with its quality, variety of brightness settings, perfect size, and battery life. The flap over the charging port is a non-issue if you are concerned about it and are thinking of a tactical light instead. It emits a white light as opposed to the E35R, which is more yellow-colored. I bought both, pictured below. If I had known about the E35R having a yellow color, I would have bought a different model in that size. I have owned Fenix lights in the past and they still function perfectly under harsh conditions. For this reason, I will not consider any other brand.

Fenix mid sized flashlight
2 February 2023

This is an easy to use mid sized flashlight with high output and nice attention to detail. Overall the manufacture and design is top notch (so far have used it around two weeks). The big difference between this an an inexpensive model is the amount of light this flashlight can sustain. I compared it to a cheap amazon brand and the difference is amazing. The intensity setting ring is an easy one handed switch, a must if you have your hands full and should be able to use with gloves with a little practice (haven't used it with gloves yet). Also the low setting is plenty of light for most situations, the the high setting lights up the whole back yard and then some. The strobe tactical feature is enough to confuse anyone and it knocks you back, believe me. The small keychain light is very small but bright and runs on a AAA battery. Quick Turing the on/off cycle reveals three levels of brightness (takes a little practice). It's a nice bit of lagnaippe with the main flashlight for a good price (I got the sale price).

Great quality/durability, a couple cons though
9 August 2023

The quality of this light is excellent, and it's proven quite durable so far, as advertised. I love the rotary switch, especially in winter when wearing gloves. The 2 drawbacks, however, are beam width/flood angle and battery. The flood is only 65 degrees, which is as advertised, but my personal preference would be to give up some throw distance in exchange for wider flood, but maybe that's just me. My issue with the battery is that the max output of 3000 lumens, or even the 2nd power setting last noticeably less than advertised, and I don't like how it automatically lowers the power output as the battery percentage drops. I would much rather it be capable of staying at full power until the battery physically won't run it anymore. It seems it's designed to lower the output to make battery last longer, but then you spend probably 90% of the battery's life only capable of running at about 25% brightness, which is a huge disappointment to me. I rated this 4 stars because of quality, but that's just because 3 and a half stars isn't an option. That's where I'd like to rate it because of the power output issue.

Love the UI
11 September 2024

I have many flashlights. No need to comment on features this model has in common with other similar Fenix lights. What makes this model unique is the User Interface. I originally decided to NOT purchase this model because it did not have a standard tail switch. Thought about it for a couple weeks and decided to give it a try. I love it. The rotary switch is so easy to use and requires just enough rotational force to avoid accident switching but not so much as to make operation difficult. No specific orientation in the hand is required to find the mode or to land tail cap switches where you want them. Similarly, no practice is required to operate the rotary switch or to use it in alternate hands. Love these lights
13 January 2024

I worked on an offshore drilling rig that gifted us all a Fenix flashlight. I took mine to my parents house, and charged it up. That night, my dad and I tried it out and WOW! We were definitely impressed. It was brighter than anything we had. He absolutely loved it, so I gave it to him. He takes it EVERYWHERE he goes. My son is a police officer and saw it while visiting and purchased one to use at work. My brother also had to have one once he saw it. I gave all 3 of them one for Christmas this year, and it was by far their favorite gift from me. We will never be without Fenix flashlights again. I also bought my grandsons the bicycle lights. They can see very well at night while riding.Thank you Fenix for giving us the best flashlights we'll ever own.

I have version 2, so after fully charging both lights I took them outside and holding one in each hand put them on turbo. The brightness seemed even, the focus however was more pronounced on v3. I've purchased perhaps 17 flashlights, 5 rechargable coast and the other 12 fenix. Looking at the v3 pd40r I found that though it isn't quite as bright as the tk22r which I also have, the lumin loss didn't occur as rapidly on the graph, in fact it, according to the specs appears to diminish in luminosity at a slower pace. The others last several minutes then drop off a cliff down to around 1000. And that, is principally why I picked the pd40r. It is a nice little light and thexed the switch issue.
